Title: Religion and Homeless Teens
Post by: Kylyssa on September 18, 2009, 09:45:30 PM
I finally did it.  I finally mentioned the impact of religion on homeless teens on a mainstream site!  To me, the connection has always been pretty clear to me since I was homeless myself.  I've met a lot of homeless teens and young adults whose situation was basically the result of having fundamentalist religious parents who either abused them to the breaking point or kicked them out for either believing something other than their parents' religion or for being homosexual or bisexual.

I really haven't read much of anything expressing this idea - that parents' religion can sometimes lead them to discard their children.  I also touched on how religion has impacted American beliefs about treatment for mental illnesses and developmental disorders.

I admit I tiptoed pretty lightly on the subject but I did go there.  I'm eager to see people's reactions to it.

Some Reasons People Become Homeless - Including Religion (http://www.squidoo.com/Reasons_for_Homelessness)

Keep in mind it's pretty much an editorial meant to get people thinking about the subject of homelessness.  I expect some nasty comments and emails though.
