I just received a letter from a friend of mine who is in jail. He is about to be moved from county to big boy jail and said that the only book they allow is the bible. I assume they would also allow the koran and other books of the major religions. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not because I don't think they should have those books, but what does that leave an atheist? Nothing?
If I didn't have a choice I would take the bible over nothing at all. At least this would give me some Quentin Tarrentino-esque entertainment.
I told him to convert to paganism so he could at least claim Thor comics were part of his religion.
Thoughts?
How the hell can banning books from a jail be beneficial?
Tell him to to claim Pastafarianism and bring the Flying Spaghetti Monster Bible. If they say no, he can cause quite a stir and maybe get some rules changed. They should be allowed any book that doesn't promote crime.
Yeah, that's ridiculous. I agree with Whitney. What state is that in? It sounds like they need some major overhauls in their corrections policies. I bet they're increasing their statewide crime rate by pulling stunts like that.
Illinois
Wow, Illinois? I'm from Chicago so I'm vastly surprised by that. Glad I never got in trouble back home then.
im also from chicago and this is suprising. But also theres this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRwgvzg-wA4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRwgvzg-wA4) edit: didn't really look at link very much but it makes it point tho i despise keith oberman.
Yuck. I hate it when totally ignorant people hold public offices.
Reminds me of the quote from a Senator on Religilous: "You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator."
Its Dekalb County. I think Cook County would not be able to get away with it. I am mailing a letter back to him tomorrow so if I get a reply about the situation I will post the update.
FSM 4 the wins

And just when I thought you were kidding, I google it and there it was.
Amazing.
You know, if prisons made you read the Bible, that'd be some cruel and unusual punishment.
Eh, 75 percent of regulars are Christian anyway.
For atheists it's just another book, and for OTHER theists... The can pretend. It's all the same.

Tell him to also say that the Gospel of (FS)M requires he also have access to the 'Hadiths', which take form in the discussions of the numerous Councils, such as HA and Lor...

Well, that rules out the bible... murder, rape, and genocide are all illegal
