Title: Piano players @ HAF?
Post by: nikkmichalski on August 31, 2009, 02:10:05 AM
Do we have any piano/keyboard/synth/kazoo players in the house?

I play piano. In fact, I just uploaded some to here (http://www.mediatweek.com/play_audio.php?audio=28). I just got midi cables this week, so I hooked up my Roland to my Mac and fiddled around with GarageBand.

How about you?

I have played a kazoo or two in my day. In fact, I had a dream about it last night. No joke.

Other than that, I'm not cool enough for keyed instruments. I played violin for awhile.

Hey, that's a good recording! I'm new to the whole digital/synth thing, but I've been playing piano since I was about 4 years old. I have a friend that owns a shop down here that sells music stuff, so of course I bought some midi cables, only to discover that my electric piano (Yamaha YPG-535) isn't midi-capable. Great. So now I have to buy some usb-midi cables. I have an old Dell that's on it's last leg, so I'm hoping to replace it with a Mac and just on the GarageBand Bandwagon.

I play percussion in the band. Basically our Orchestra sucks, so everyone likes band better by default. And never underestimate the power of the kazoo! I read about a man who could play the kazoo (actually ocarina, but whatever) through a plastic tube through his anus. (http://www.damninteresting.com/professional-farters (http://www.damninteresting.com/professional-farters)). That's talent. In order to one-up him, you must now learn to play the violin with your feet. And...Go!

That's a shame, but it could be worse. I'm going to have to bribe my guitarist-friend to learn sheet music. But it's ok; "Tabs are just as good." Riiiight.

It's because of my background in piano that I can read sheet music today. I think it also helped a great deal when learning guitar. I still practice it or record with it for certain songs, but I've pretty much gone to guitar and bass.

Have bass, will travel. My wife won't mind especially if it's NY.  :D

And it is! Unfortunately, my guitarist friend and I have barely any time to rehearse. Once a month, if we're lucky!

Yep, I've been playing the piano for four or five years now. I don't currently have a  good piano to play on at the moment, which sucks.  :(

Oh that's terrible. If I didn't have my piano, The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Beatles Books, I wouldn't know what to do with myself! What do you have that you can work with?

Well, the piano is pretty old, probably almost thirty years old. So it's in need of a tune up. I thought about getting a keyboard but it's still not the same. PLUS a decent keyboard would cost a fair amount of money. Or at least that's what I'm finding on a site called musiciansfriend.com. For a few months I have been focusing on learning the bass guitar. So far I really like it, but it's somewhat difficult learning on my own since I've never attempted learning any kind of guitar before. I'll probably just focus on my bass until I figure out my piano situation.

That's a shame. Musicians' Friend is a very good site.
What do you call someone who hangs out with a bunch of musicians?
A drummer. http://www.instantrimshot.com

Yes, it is a good site. But, I was disappointed when I came on there looking for a ukulele and they didn’t have any.  :verysad:
Heh, and that website you posted scared me a bit. When I went on there clicked the red button looking thing....my volume was at it's maximum.
