Title: Another Virginia Tech Incident :(
Post by: Godless on August 28, 2009, 02:26:06 AM
I'm a freshman at Virginia Tech right now and last night two Virginia Tech students were murdered close to Blacksburg: http://www2.wsls.com/sls/news/local/new ... und/44453/ (http://www2.wsls.com/sls/news/local/new_river_valley/article/montgomery_county_sheriffs_office_investigating_after_two_bodies_found/44453/)

I mean, come on what is wrong with people nowadays? It just seems like a random act of violence. At first there was the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, followed by the beheading of the Chinese girl, now this. Should I be afraid at all...?

Whats wrong with people? No idea, but there are a lot of possible reasons for the murderers, ranging from a mental disorder, to anger over something that an unrelated person did. Should you be afraid? No, I think that is irrational, and unhelpful. You should be far more worried about crashing your car, if anything.

What do you mean, 'nowadays'? All that's changed in 6000 years is forensics, news distribution, and the particular tools of slaughter.

Yeah, humans are pretty fucking violent. Then again nature is in general. This is sad though.

Any way you slice it, this is sad.
The violent animal in us is never far away.

Not even sure how you'd protect yourself, but be careful out there!

No... it's the same as it was before. Actually tuition is increasing every year, which is pretty much the same for every college. People still want to come here because it's a good school. Even though I knew about these incidents when I got in, I still chose to come to Virginia Tech, because these things don't really scare me that much since it can pretty much happen anywhere. The Chinese girl got beheaded most likely because the guy was mad at her or something... I dunno.

Try some self defense classes.  Skills plus confidence from some training or learning any kind of techniques will help keep you from looking like an easy target in all kinds of situations.  And realize most likely nothing is ever going to happen to you.

Well... defense classes won't help if someone has a gun pointed at me. Unless I take ninjutsu and learn to dodge bullets :P

Actually many martial arts train just for that sort of situation. If you move before they pull the trigger then they won't hit you. I've been held up at gun point 4 times. Everytime I was able to knock the gun out of the way so I could proceed to be the snot out of the person who held me up.

Self-defense (unarmed) doesn't really work with an armed attacker. You may be able to beat me silly but you will never attain a bullet-proof status.

On the flip side, a lot of shooters who are good train to hit people who try to dodge. Also, it's very dangerous to try and take a loaded gun out of someone's hand.
