Title: One From the Christian Playbook
Post by: liveyoungdiefast on August 19, 2009, 03:19:39 AM
All of you former Christians probably heard the word 'Christian' or 'Christ like' as a synonym for good. I see no reason why as atheists we shouldn't do the same. So I present - atheism as a synonym for good, used in the same context Christians like to use their own religion.

"Their son is gay, but they accept him for who he is and promised to help him out with understanding his identity"
"How Atheist of them! They are such good parents!"

"My friend got an A+ on his paper on evolutionary biology"
"What a bright guy, he must have a very atheist centered mind"

"The criminal did not seem to care that what he did was wrong and only feared retribution."
"Ugh, how unatheist."

"I'm glad that secular charity is helping those tsunami victims."
"The power of atheism compels them!"

Okay that was mostly just for fun. But an interesting idea. My girlfriend sometimes useless the word 'godless' as a happy adjective like other people would say "God blessed". :D

I would prefer the use of "godless" to "atheist" for this purpose.

Everyone I know avoids doing stuff like that, because I usually pull out the Inquisition stuff.

I dunno . . .  we don't pretend to have an inherent moral code.
It might help with public opinion, though.

Then again, if any big-name theist ever caught on they'd be able to put us in a vice since, technically, anything that isn't believing in gods is atheist-like.  Murder, sex, horse racing, rape, painting, and raising children well.  While we do not typically do the bad stuff (indeed, more Christians do!), we don't really have the capacity to label these actions as being derived from atheism any more than theism, whereas the theist believes, often, that their god installs their choice virtues in all people.  Meh, I guess it's worth a try, though.

Oh, and the swap on "god bless" to "godless" is cute.   :D

I don't think anyone would buy it. Although my father was just telling me that I seem to have great christian morals.

Yeah, okay.

Maybe "how humanist" of them would work better since humanism is making a statement about moral values?

It makes sense, but if one is being satirical, then "how atheist" works. It's a ridiculous idea that all chrisitans are people with outstanding morals.
