Title: Obama eliminates funding for abstinence education programs
Post by: Phillysoul11 on May 10, 2009, 05:28:02 AM
Just read this today, what do you guys think? good or bad idea?

QuoteThe 2010 Budget proposes a new Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Initiative to support community-based and faith-based efforts to
reduce teen pregnancy using evidence-based and promising
models. In addition, a new Strengthening Communities Fund
will help build the capacity of non-profit organizations and State,
Local and Tribal entities to better serve low-income and disadvantaged
populations. This Budget also proposes funding for (1)
a new child welfare initiative, and (2) a human services case
management system for Federally-declared disasters. This Budget
eliminates funding for Community-Based Abstinence Education,
the mandatory Title V Abstinence Education program, the
Compassion Capital Fund, and Rural Community Facilities.

I think abstinence only education is a huge waste of money since it doesn't work...it was a great idea to cut the funding.

You're absolutly right just look at the virgin Mary, lol. No really though it was about time people are gonna fuck no matter what you say so you might as well teach them to be safe.

I agree with Whitney and Tanker. Abstinence programs don't work. It is unnatural to suppress sexuality. Children also like to experiment and when two kids are in love than the hormones rule.

Fantastic. Now if only we could get the RIAA and MPAA to understand when their models fail...

I think it's fantastic. "Education" which operates under the basic principle of limiting the information about sex their reveal to the children they are "educating" is a mockery in itself.

It is not as if the new programs won't tell them about abstinence, it will simply also tell them all of the other pertinent information about sex they need to know, supposing by some astonishing turn of events, they opt not to remain abstinent.

Yeah you guys are absolutely right. I'm a teen so I can tell you that the more you tell us not to do something, the more we're gonna want to do it (which I think everyone with a brain knows). I've always thought abstinence only teaching was ridiculous. Teens are going to have sex whether you like it or not. Might as well teach us how to be safe, sheesh.

Basically he's doing what conservatives said they would do but never actually do - cut away wasteful spending :D

Obama is doing more than his fair share of wasteful spending.  Giving 4 Billion dollars to Chrysler is wasteful spending of the highest order.  So he cut a little funding to the abstinence-only program.  Big whoop.

Thanks Obama.  I'm sure there's all kinds of funding loopholes in regards to abstinence-only sex ed, and even if there is no other source of cash supplementing the teaching of ignorance, my town, among others, will have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into line with some national standard.

I'm going to hammer out all the sex ed I ever got in Louisiana, just to put a point on this.  In 5th grade, I watched a 30 minute film explaining the basics of puberty as it applied to my gender only (this was cut two years behind me, too!  Guess someone decided kids were too young to know what was happening to them), in 7th grade I finally learned why girls used pads and tampons and got to see another 30 minute video where I was informed that condoms weren't safe (I didn't even know how to put one on) by a person claiming his broke and he got into all kinds of ambiguous trouble, and warned of all kinds of STDs, and I got to see a couple pictures in textbooks that naturally the class never went over (that would have been embarrassing for the first 5 minutes, imagine the horror), and literally didn't come in "danger" of being taught anything on the topic until 10th grade, when we completely skipped all information excepting a single worksheet that was bold enough to categorize the testes as part of the endocrine system.  Again, the textbook contained nothing more than anatomical information, but we wouldn't have to worry about even so much as that.  In 11th grade, I took a health course, where my teacher talked about how we couldn't get our virginity back and how STDs were bad stuff, and how steroids shrank a guy's testicles.  Now, this is just classroom learning I'm talking about, it's not as though we didn't glean information from sources outside of class, but me in particular, friends, I was in Passion 4 Purity.  I wore a purity ring, and did abide by it, considering sex a dirty thing.  Naturally, my friends didn't really discuss anything sexual, and on a P4P field trip to the capital, we got to see a play where a person went "STD fishing" with a pole and wire, using a packaged condom as bait.  And half the room must have gasped when they saw it.

Now, if I hadn't been so into pirated game cartridge copies (ROMs) all through my young years, I might not have known what a naked woman looked like until I was 18.  I wasn't shy.  It was unthinkable to ask.  What pisses me off the most is that I was as willfully ignorant as they woefully inadequate in sex ed.  It shames me to think of it.  I turned out alright, in the end, after I got out to the university, and I've been informed that my experience wasn't entirely the norm (the Christian biology teacher, sometimes grudgingly went over the anatomic details, but my class got lucky and escaped that nightmare), and certainly your average teenager has more access to porn and "crude" friends than I did, but I'm worried, even still, that there might be a kid like me who doesn't pirate software from sites with uncensored banners, and who won't have the same experiences I did in college.  But with any luck, I'm the most f'd up example to have ever passed through the system.

We need a standardized curriculum.  Learning even the basics should not be an extracurricular activity, heretical hedonists though we may make of our children.  This is now an issue I take very seriously (well, enough to write letters that nab canned responses), so it pisses me off fiercely whenever I hear on the news about how some parent was offended at the insinuation of masturbation in a book, or when Faux thinks the liberal-sex-education-agenda-ists are taking it too far.  This is basic stuff, damn it, and kids wouldn't even blush if the idea weren't made out to be shameful, and even if they thought it was, they'd get over it in that same hour.  This is too crucial, too dangerous a thing to leave out for fear of offense.

Sorry if my post sounds wonky, I had to go back and take out most of the cuss words, and sorry if it's too long or too open about my personal experience in the school system, but this shit ( -1) really does piss me off.

I guess it's worth mentioning we "examined both sides" of evolution and creationism in biology, too.  And I ate that shit up, just the same.  Ugh.

I agree it's good to dismantle the mandatory absitence education.  Just too bad the funding was pulled from that wasteful program and devoted straight-a-way to others.  pft

Abstinence Ed. to reduce teen preg? Two words --Bristol Palin. (Well, two names; not two words.)
"Bristol" is a rude-ish word in the UK and the Palin kid looks a bit endowed, hasn't the UK been having a huge laugh over the Bristol situation?

What's the bristol thing? I've not heard of that.

The UK has the highest teen pregnancy rate in all of Europe. There are pram-faces all over the country. More in the north though. Bloody northerners...

With the way the country was already, it's hard not to fuck it up.
