I've come up with a new point to stop debating with someone. The second the word evolutionist comes out, I can pretty much tell I may as well go talk to a turnip as try to debate with that person.
Some of my other attempted debate stop points are "it takes a lot of faith to be an atheist" or "there are no transitional forms" or even "you can't be 100% sure god doesn't exist so he must!"
So what are the lines that bring you to a point where you may not be able to bring yourself to stop debating but you know you just should?
I don't know. Sometimes the outcome actually surprises me. Some of these people don't actually believe those sayings as much as they've just been programmed into their brain by the religious community.
"That's just human reason and logic". Anything bigoted. But most commonly when I find myself repeating the same things over and over without having them addressed. That makes me think that continuing is probably a waste of time.
"Do you know why I pulled you over?"
That one gets me every time.
(I feel your pain.)
I see them as annoying opportunities to attempt to teach the person why non-fundamentalists think of the phrases they use.
In my experience people try to use faith as an "argument" or "reason" for their "proof" of God. It usually stops when someone says ,"FAITH blah blah FAITH blah blah blah FAITH."
"Something something something burn in hell for all eternity something something" usually does it for me. I get it. Hell's really hot, probably not a place I would spend summer vacation in...
I cannot stand, "Oh that's just human nature". There's no such thing, please stop oversimplifying.
Quote from: "Will"please stop oversimplifying.
Oh, it's just human nature to oversimplify.
The one I hate is Darwinist. If I believe Einsteins Special Therory of Relativity I'm not an Einsteinist, or in gravity I'm not a Newtonist. So why would believing in Evolution make me a Darwinist.
"Evolutionist" as a pejorative is a strictly American thing.
Me: "Anyone who says as an absolute that they "know" that there is or isn't a god either has access to data I do not, or they're lying to themselves."
Them: "No, I know because it's what I believe."
[Start string of circular logic]
Evangelical is a silly word.
It sounds cold and wobbly.
