So I need a new MP3 player since I don't know what the hell happened to my old one. What would you guys suggest? I've been looking at this Creative Zen: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6855102034 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855102034)
I'm also interested in Microsoft's Zune. I do not want an iPod for two reasons: I'm an Apple hater and I dislike having the same MP3 player that every other person has. I'm trying not to exceed $100 as my budget is limited. Also, are there any good folding headphones that I can fit into my pocket that are not ear bud headphones?
Okay, I'm completely anti-Apple, too. I really am. Have been for years. That said, I reeeaaally want an iTouch. My fiance has one and... damnit, it's cool. MP3 player, video player, wireless connection, cool programs, touch screen, great sound, tv-hookup... color me impressed. Plus, if you jailbreak it (or just use the right software) you never have to use iTunes. Since I use Outlook for all my email and contacts and whatnot, all I have to do is sync those with Google. The iTouch syncs with Google. Voila.
If you're really, really intent on not using that one, I suggest for going with the Zen. The X-Fi if you can afford it. Great quality (even though it has a pointless instant messenging system built in.)
As for the headphones, I've no idea, I'm afraid. I use earbuds because they don't get all sweaty when I run.
I just got the Creative Zen a couple of months ago and its great. The screen is just stunning, the battery is pretty decent, the headphones aren't too great but you get what you pay for in those, and its pretty easy to use (plus it can record audio, tune into a radio station, have pictures on it, watch videos, etc). One thing I would recommend is that you have the leather case to go with it, or at least the screen protector (which I don't have, but I have the leather case so it works out). I can imagine that the screen would get scratched pretty easily if you weren't careful. If you have any other questions let me know...
I absolutely love Apple. I have both the iPod touch and the classic iPod (iPod touch was a gift). I use my iPod touch daily and it works like a charm. I've had it for 2 years now and it's still running perfectly. I also have the Macbook and the iMac and I love them both. I think they're a lot better than PC's. They last longer, the desktop layout looks better in my opinion, and very student friendly. I don't know why you would hate Apple. Is it because everyone has them? Anyways, if you're looking for a good MP3 player, I would suggest the iPod nano since you're on a budget. It's $150 though. I wouldn't suggest the Zune because my friend has it and the video quality sucks compared to the iPod. The only good thing about the Zune is probably the radio feature. But if you're looking for quality for a great price, I'd highly recommend the iPod nano.
Most Apple haters have iPods. You don't have to like Unix or think pre-built all-in-ones are the way to go to enjoy a simple and effective mp3 player. But to each their own.
Here's your best bet:

I've had very good fortune with my iPod Shuffle (the original, which still works), Classic, and my iPhone as players. Literally no issues of malfunction. My kids have had iPod Classics and have had some problems, but in 3 out of four cases, they were due to inappropriate handling or damage (from being brainless).
One of my sons who feels that iPods are absolute crap, got a Zune on February 11 for his birthday. He called me from college two weeks later to ask me if it had a warranty because it wasn't working.
So you can be hit or miss with any of them. I'd just make sure to take really good care with whichever you choose. They are not bricks, but delicate pieces of electronic wizardry. I'm biased to iPods/Phones, but any decent one will work. I like Will's bargain that he posted. You can't beat the price for sure!
That SanDisk MP3 player is refurbished though... I'm looking for a brand new one, not one that's been used before.

Then I vote for an iPod of some sort. Whatever you can afford.
i have an ipod touch and I could not be happier. It is not just the ipod, it is also itunes. The combo does everything I want and more. Do yourself a favor and go the apple route if you can.
I am an apple fan through and through, so I think you know my answer... Ipod.

I too detest Apple. I also won't have anything to do with Zune... I have two friends who have them and they are buggy as hell. One I could overlook as a manufacturing anomaly... but 2?
I have a Creative Zen Vision (http://www.creative.com/products/pmp/demo/zenvision.asp)... it's a little bigger than the one you showed and is no longer being made. A friend of mine found one on ebay but that was a few months ago. I LOVE THIS MP3! It's 60 Gb... I have our entire music library on there (well over 300 CDs plus more digital since then), 3 dozen Friends episodes, Seasons 1-4 of The Office, AND 7 movies. I still have several gigs left too. The picture is amazing. It has a built-in speaker so I put on my soothing music at night and put it under my pillow so I can hear it but it doesn't disturb the hubster.
I have MP3 plug in the car so I can play it in the car on trips so the kid can watch The Office or listen to music.
It was MUCH cheaper than Apple, but I can't help but think that because Apple is so big, Creative just couldn't compete even though it's a bigger and better machine than anything Apple has to offer. The iPod shuffle? Gimme a break.
This is my 3rd Creative Zen machine... the other two are with the hubby and the kid... I keep getting bigger and better and they get my cast-offs. LOL!
I hated all Apple products until they came out with the previous iPod nano series. Now, that thing looked sexy. Luckily it was far too expensive and had not enough disc space sothat I could safely ignore it. After all I had a 42GB Creative Zen, which worked like a dream and contained everything that I needed. Unfortunately I accidently dropped that thing. So here I was, looking for a MP3 player with at least 32Gb memory. I tried to ignore Apple again, because they are friggin' expensive and for every little extra (like loading device, carrying bag, etc.), you"ll have to pay extra. Fortunately, the new Shuffle was still a silly device and the Nano was brought back to its old state of underpowered yukkiness. The iPod Classic was also not an alternative, because it was too heavy and too ugly. Microsoft Zune only got bad reviews and is not for sale here in Europe. So I ended up with the 32 Gb iPod Touch, because I could not find any suitable alternative. I love the iPod Touch hardware, but still hate the iTunes software (it screwed up my mp3 file- and folder names and occasionally it just aborts on my PC for no reason at all; not to mention of course that the program is very slow and consumes far too much resources). I use the player also as a PDA replacement, since my seven year old Casio Pocket Viewer is slowly falling appart.

My husband told me I should get the Microsoft Zune because it can easily be connected to our Xbox360. But, I have a little Creative jump drive based Mp3 player that still works (it can also record and play the radio), and I've had it for at least 4 years. Of course, right now it is serving as a storage device for files I couldn't fit on a CD.
I don't own a lot of music and just listen to internet radio at home. I'd suggest looking into if there is an app for Pandora or Playlist available for blackberry. I know Pandora has an Iphone app. It could also hold your music too. Of course, this suggestion is assuming that you want to spend the monthly serice fees associated with internet phones. I want one but think I should wait till the economy turns around and I'm not afraid my work will have to shut down.
I bought my son an iPod a year or so ago and it was broken and of no use in a matter of weeks. He bought himself a Zen and has loved it, and it's held up. He is a huge music fan and wears that thing out so I know it can handle a lot of songs.
I actually decided to pick up the 8GB Creative Zen that I linked since it seems like a well-rounded device to me. Thanks for the input guys, I'll tell how I like my new MP3 player after I get it and try it out.
