Title: Penn & Teller: BS!
Post by: Ihateyoumike on February 24, 2009, 10:22:58 PM
I have all 6 seasons of Penn & Teller: Bullsh!t on my computer and just recently finished watching all of the episodes. I think it's a great show. I love the fact that they are atheists, and not afraid to speak out against things that are ridiculous.
One of my favorite clips from the series so far is this one, it is from the episode entitled "Ouija boards and near death experiences.":

"None of us gets a second chance to not pee on the sofa"-Penn

I had seen the study on fighter pilots before somewhere, but couldn't remember where I had picked up that information before. I love the videos of the fighter pilots in that centrifuge.
Anybody else watch this show and have any favorite moments from it to share?

I remember back in the 90's they would be guest stars on some of the kids shows. My parents always told me they were evil.

I remember seeing an episode where they went on and on about how recycling was counter-productive and it was actually better to just trash everything and continue on with the landfills.  While I don't agree with that as a blanket statement it was interesting how they included information on the energy it takes to recycle and how the jobs in that industry are "sucky".  I thought it was funny and was impressed that I could enjoy it even though I didn't agree.  Sounds like I need to check them out.

Love that show, even when I disagree with them, I can see their point, they actually know how to put out a logical argument, well researched, and with no agenda that i can detect.

Also, many scantily clad women, always a bonus.

Okay, I had a chance to watch this now and the couple just cracked me up!  I mean, he said he saw his wife rise up out of her body and then where was the dog?  Isn't the dog's spirit currently residing within their new dogs body?  How was it floating around with his wife?  Please tell me her book was published through a vanity press.  Too funny!  roflol

Who are Penn and Teller?

Quote from: "McQ"Who are Penn and Teller?

Penn and Teller are Vegas headlining comedians/magicians. They also have the Showtime show Bullsh*t!. Penn is the larger guy with the long hair. Teller is the smaller guy who doesn't talk. Penn does the talking for the both of them. Look them up, they're great at what they do, not to mention they're openly atheist.

edit: ha ha. I just saw your signature, how'd I miss that? I think you know full well who Penn and Teller are.  :D

Sorry, couldn't resist seeing if anyone went for it.  :D

I love those guys. My wife hates them. Specifically, she hates Penn, because she says he's so obnoxious. I've seen their act live, a few times, and I have always loved how they've kept the torch of skepticism lit, following the likes of Houdini and Randi.

Speaking of P&T, I also highly recommend their first film, Penn and Teller Get Killed, and their books, especially, Cruel Tricks For Dear Friends, and How to Play With Your Food.

I've only caught a few of the episodes (just on Youtube) but it really is a great show, especially the one on the Bible.

Part of my evil sense of humor is their fault! You obviously have the same warped sense of humor.

I used to love them long ago when I saw their programmes as a child. Then I watched their amazing film Penn and Teller Get Killed, which revealed a whole load of their tricks, tricks they plundered time and again on their Channel 4 series much later.

As for scantily clad women, I recall seeing stark bollock naked men (literally) in the episode on circumcision as well!

I'm not a fan. I think they oversimplify issues. Entertainers should stick to entertainment. *Slap*

They also only ever show the most ridiculous version of the side they are attempting to refute. If you are going to refute a position, then refute it in its strongest form, not its weakest.

Is there an example of what you are talking about, out of curiosity?  I, personally, love the show even when I don't agree with them (as someone else noted) and I have run across an inaccuracy or two but that's more to do with their research staff who are pretty good most of the time.

I love their show and find as entertainers they do an awesome job keeping the show entertaining even if I might happen to disagree.  (not often). I love how candid and open Penn is about his opinions and even makes fun of himself regularly.  If you like the show you might like his blog 'Penn Says' on crackle.   http://crackle.com/Members/2336040 (http://crackle.com/Members/2336040)

I enjoy most of their shows and similarly agree with them most of the time. I do find that Penn's style of presenting can get a bit much at times. Sometimes he just seems unnecessarily angry and obnoxious about things and doesn't seem interested in leaving any room for other opinions. Granted, this isn't with all the episodes and, for at least some of the part, makes the show quite watchable. I also find that the way the clips of interviewed people are edited and compiled is extremely biased, naturally in Penn & Teller's favour, so I watch their show lightheartedly rather than in actual earnest. Overall, it's a very entertaining show. I'm glad there are at least some people out there who are capable of publicly showing up some of the worlds absurdities.

Yeah Penn can come off that way.  I don't know if he's passionate about it or what.  But as for leaving no room for opinion, I don't think thats by design.  The show is only 30 min long so he has to fit all sorts of research, arguments and counter arguments into a tiny time frame.

I adore Penn & Teller.  I need to convince a roommate to get them on netflix or something because I seriously miss that show.
