Title: What age group do you fall into?
Post by: Ihateyoumike on January 21, 2009, 02:30:49 AM
I'm just wondering this for the fun of it. I've also seen assumptions made (and made them myself) about certain poster's ages. Also, it'd be pretty fun to see what age group the average reader/poster on this board is. I also haven't seen a post like this in my time spent browsing this board. (Which, admittedly, is waaaay more time than I should be spending.  :D )

Myself? I'm 26 years old.

It is interesting, I think this is a pretty youthful group.  I'm 34 (yikes 35 this month)!! Uh oh  :eek2:

I am 21 years old but in April I will be 22.

I'm 27.  I always feel like a baby because most of my friends are older than me.  But, at the same time I feel old because my twenties are slipping away.

Have no fear, 30 is the new 20!  You are heading into your prime:)

I'm in the same boat.  I have the added bonus of having been a parent for over seven years already, while most my older friends are still single and childless.  And I'm getting arthritis in my knees and ankles (at 26!).

I was feeling the same way for a long time. But, as others have said, the 30's is the prime these days. The way I figure it, with as much as I've learned and grown since I came into the 20's, I'm excited for how much I"ll have learned and grown by my 30's!

Fair enough. Perhaps I should tell you that I have neck and lower back problems at 26, in fact, I can hardly move my head at this moment without a sharp pain in my neck.

Is that better?  ;)

You guys are tooo funny!  You sound like your heading for a walker any day now!  I'm excited because my kiddo is graduating from high school next year and I'll only be 36!  Woohoo, time to find a life. (Please don't do the math, yes I was a little frisky in the early days, ha!)

I hope I still talk to you guys when you are frantically plucking gray hairs in your cars on the way to work,  :D

Having no religious affiliation spikes in the 20s. When people pair up and start thinking about families, there is a tendency to shift back toward religion. I suppose that explains the large population in that demographic.

Still, I'll be proud to say "I'm an atheist" all the way through my 90s, if I'm lucky enough to live that long.  :D

Uh oh, good thing I don't have anyone to answer to, hehe.  I'm a little disappointed that I am the geezer of this group.

As far as what Curio was saying, I think it's the opposite.  It took me several "pairings" and having kids to figure out that I needed to stop pretending to believe in something I didn't.  Focusing on people rather than fantasy really makes a person realize what in the world they are doing.

Yikes, now I sound like a big whore....

Oh no!  You need to find a way to de-stress.  You may not grow a full one, most men can't, hence the creation of the soul patch and gottee (spelling?).  My son has been shaving since he was 13 poor thing, he has a few grays too, I think you either get them or you don't.  There's always "Just for Men"!

That's probably because they don't know how to teach kids morality without playing the God card.

It's actually funny, that bit about god and morality: those kids who are subjected to a dogmatic, god-based code of morality progress down the road of ethical development *more slowly* than their non-indocrinated peers.  (I need to find the scientific study this bit of data came from; it's in a box in the garage somewhere.  I will search for it in earnest if anyone is interested.)

OK, I knew that H.A.F. was for the most part a young group; I'm a doddering ancient by the standards of this board, it seems.  Still, I don't look quite as time-worn as my avatar. :P
Having lived a very active life, I'm still relatively pain-free ('cept for some mornings) though I do have plenty of scars and a strange bump or two from broken bones that weren't set properly.  I'm lucky you put the poll here this year; soon I'll be past the half-century mark.

Another oldster, here. Well, at least according to the calendar. I still feel like I did when I was 27. Of course, when I was 27, I had already had two knee surgeries, foot surgery, back pain, and arthritic changes in my shoulders. Oh, and two concussions, two broken ribs, cracked sternum, broken right arm, broken kneecap, loads of stitches (ice hockey player through college and into aldulthood), and a busted tailbone (which occurred at the same time as the cracked sternum and one of the concussions).

Evel Knievel was a sissy.
 :(

Oh, no complaining about gray hair, people! I'd kill for a full head of gray hair, or a full head of any color hair!

...zzzzZZZZZ ... Huh!?!?  What!
Who are you men?  And where's my soup!?!?

I'm 45 going on 46... but my scale says I'm in my 20's!

To be honest, I'm in better shape all-round now than when I was actually in my 20's.  That includes physical, mental, emotional - everything but money ;-)

I wish the same to all you young-uns.

Now, Get Off My Lawn!

Dang, man, you've had almost as many breaks as I have!  (Not really, but that's still a lot.)

I turn the big three nine in six days.  I'm with you on the hair, I've been completely bald three times now and it seriously blows.  And to be completely sexist about it, I think it blows more for women.  My partner has a receding hairline and it 'ain't no thing' but people notice and seem to care about women's thinning hair.

I cherish every hair on my silly little head, no matter the color.

Wow, this is a young group, including me at 22. But, as with some others, I feel older thanks to a (short) lifetime of accident-proneness. 4 broken ankles, 3 broken wrists, 1 concussion, 2 reconstructed ACL's (each knee of course), and reconstructed shoulder...and my back hurts...

Actually, it looks like about fifty percent of people who voted in the poll are over thirty.  Compared to other forums I've hung out in, this is an older complement.

I'm an oldster, about the same age as Obama.  Healthwise, I feel just as good, if not better, than when I was in my 20's.  Most of my past health issues have been stress induced and were more imaginary than real.  I do have a lot of gray hair, as laetusatheos can attest to, but I knew I inherited that trait from both of my parents, so it doesn't bother me.

Younger people are generally more internet savvy, so on most forums I have been on, there have been mostly younger people.  I have been on the internet since 1987, predating web browsers; and since computers are my work and hobby, I have kept up with the technology.  Sadly, most people I know near my age and older are not so computer literate; they use email, and browse a little, but forums like this are a bit too advanced for them.

Me too BTW though I have to concede that I'm beginning to get bored of computers just for computing's sake.

And yeah, I thought the internet was for numpty's when it first came out! There's still a part of me that thinks it is.

I'm 51, and I'm still relatively in one piece.  I have diabetes, numb feet, and I've put on a few extra pounds that I'm trying to take off, but it could be a lot worse, so I'm not complaining.

Im 15 myself but i've found that very few people my age want to talk about religion which can get very annoying at times. Luckily for me, i know an open minded Agnostic who got A*s in his GCSE PR (philosophy and religion) who makes very good debate on both the theist and atheist side (aka no circular argument)

its suprising how many people are defencive about their religions and a good way to annoy people is to just ask them a simple statement that causes them to repetitively contradict themselves and their beliefs  :D

I'm 18 and I actually have a few gray hairs, no joke... It's probably because I drink so much coffee and sleep really late. There has never been a time within the past two years where I have slept before 1:00AM. On school days, I won't even sleep until 2:00 or 3:00AM and 4:00 to 5:00AM on weekends.

Not to hijack the thread or anything but, I've noticed this too. When I was 15 I was naive enough to think that religion was a private matter. I didn't realize how it damages the world.

It does keep getting better as long as one is prudent about money, exercise and fun.  Always make time for exercise no matter how busy you are.  Exercise is one of the main keys to a long healthy life.  Always make time for some fun because it adds balance to life. Save some money every month so you can retire early, like I did, and have even more fun.

Live long and prosper.

Based purely on these numbers, more critical thinking and questioning of "authority" in the younger generation. Maybe when it is time for us to take charge of washington it wont be soo backwards.

Fair points but you should consider at least these two factors.
1) This is not an exclusively atheist forum, there are theists as well so they will also be represented in the results.
2) I would expect that if one took a profile of any discussion forum (as opposed to a social netwoking forum) the profiles would be very similar to this one.

I say this because my wife and I at 50 represent the very first people to experience personal computing. People 5 years older than I didn't even have access to calculators at school. So I think the curve you are seeing here is much more representative of the demographic of users of discussion forums than any innate quality of young atheists. I think the age profile at a serious Christian discussion board would be very similar.

I thought about those factors as well, but I like to be one for optimism. To be honest there isn't a 50 or over person that I know personally with out access to a computer or internet and use it frequently.

Quote from: "Beast"I thought about those factors as well, but I like to be one for optimism.
An optimistic view is good and I share it with you. I am very glad to see the high number of atheist under 20 who are so knowledgeable about religion and the arguments against it. But statistics should inform one's view and only support it if that is the correct interpretation. It's like the old joke 'Politicians use statistics in the same way a drunk uses a lamp post, for support rather than illumination!'

Quote from: "Beast"To be honest there isn't a 50 or over person that I know personally with out access to a computer or internet and use it frequently.
Again I agree with you, but in my experience people around my age use the internet in a more pragmatic way than those up to there 30's. People my age, in my experience use the Internet as an information source and not as part of their social life. Additionally older people have often "Been there, done that, got the T Shirt!" and can't be arsed with this sort of thing. Being older often means having enough experience to have formed a crusty world view that they don't feel the need to promote nor defend.  I have 3 kids 26, 23 & 23. They all have MYFace pages but none of the are members of discussion forums. I am considered odd by my peers (for more than one reason  :raised:  It's the individual that matters. I think that the quantity and to a lesser extent the quality of information made available to people below the age of 30, while they have been growing up, is vastly improved by comparison to those who were born 20 years earlier. It has open informed, and bigoted, discussion in a way that the 1st world has never known before. When I was 15/16 I would not have discussed theism/atheism in the way that I have seen people of that age discuss those issues today.

People in there teens are now exposed to issues that I never even knew about. I think that is the important thing. We are seeing almost a couple of generations now where believing what you parents believed is challenged by readily available information, and the old views are being found wanting. And at the forefront of those challenges is personal sexuality. There have always been homosexuals and always will be, the thing is that the old views are now recognised by more and more people as just plain bigotry written in an old book by a bunch of homophobes.

Times change, but I think they are changing faster and with far wider ramifications than ever before in human history. The Internet supports the dissemination of Memes and it is the perfect growth medium for them and I thing the under 30s are being subjected to an intellectual environment second to none and are responding with logic in a way that is going to make the future very different from the past. Just as the harnessing of physical power drove the industrial revolution, the harnessing of the power of information is driving the intellectual revolution that we a living through right now.

I wasn't trying to get into a lengthy discussion here just that these numbers are optimistic especially in regards to the above. I can't even call these statistics because they are obviously biased towards on side of the discussion. So in that respect I wouldn't even try to pretend that this is a representation of the rest of the world and please don't think I am.

By having that drastic increase in numbers favoring the younger people that means the information is getting out and discussed, not just on the internet but in real life.

I am 35 and counting...  close to 36, but can't call it just yet.

Let's see... during my 34th year I was told I look like I was in my early 20's...  During the early 30's I was even carded for buying beer!  What a compliment!

Then, during my 35th year, gray hairs started to appear in my beard, and silver laces are showing up on my head.  Now when people guess my age, they say 40, 42, 44  :(

I sure feel it, too, unfortunately.  You know things like aches, pains, and a hellishly bad lower back.

I wonder if the switch to the new forum closed it cause when I go into the edit poll section it says it was closed the moment I first posted this a few years ago, which clearly it was open for quite a while.
