Do you like to play Strategy Board Games? Or are you like all those other video-game hicks? Chess? Checkers? Go? Stratego? Othello? Parcheesi?
Talk about your favorite strategy board game here. If you don't play em, nows the chance to try something new!
I'm a chess-addict.
Always loved Parchesi, Risk, and Pente.
I love to play Chess, Monopoly, Stratego and Risk.
I very much used to like playing Risk ... I was so into it that I built my own world map board (huge).
Nowadays, although I don't play Risk any more (I would but no one else seems to want to) I play a play-by-e-mail game called VGA Planets which involves strategy, elements of role-play (optional) and can last over a year ... it has been compared to an 11 player game of chess.
Kyu
Risk is fantastic. Unfortunately i can no longer play it with my family or friends as it always ends in tears...
I always wanted to play one of those life-sized chess games. You know, where real people fight to the death on a huge chess board.
Is that unethical?

ooh! ooh! Risk is great fun. My best strategy is to take south america first and build up forces in brazil while everyone else is fighting over asia. One time I had 68 legions in brazil, and the other two guys had almost torn each other to shreds. heheheh... :brick:
I play chess and checkers a lot. I actually have a
drinking chess set

32 shot glasses with the sillhoettes of the pieces stencilled onto them, and you drink your opponent's as you take them. The more inefficient your game, the worse you feel the next morning.
I've never heard of Go, Stratego, Othello or Parcheesi, though.
I play Go, though I'm absolutely abysmal at it since I just picked it up, but I enjoy it a lot. Dominion is another favorite of mine, especially when we're playing half-tanked, which is usually how games tend to go.
Twister and Monopoly. Before you say Twister is not a strategy game, there is much strategy involved in selecting which yellow circle in which to place your left foot, taking into consideration your location and position on the board as well as the look on your opponent's face. Both of these games are much more fun with alcohol and without clothing.
I play a lot of chess (ELO rating approx. 1850). I also love Risk and Stratego.
Quote from: "Wechtlein Uns"What about monopoly? I never figured out how to get a winning strategy in monopoly. It has frustrated me to no end. or :pop: or ;)
Other then that, I love risk, but there simply isn't anyone to play with. My brothers are not intrested in it, and currently I'm not even sure if the damn game has all the neccessary pieces anymore, since my youngest brother has...played...with them (his in second grade, so no swallowing accidents, but he just has a bad habbit of leaving stuff around after his done... -_-' ). And I was pretty unbeatlable in checkers back in the day
How about virtual board games? I like Age of empires very much and Stronghold (for those who are unfamiliar, Stronghold is very much like age of empires, just not with the campaigns but otherwise more complete in castle building and maintaining).
But nothing beats real life strategic problems.
Stratego is good. Axis and Allies is up there too. I'd say my favorite game of all time however has to be the original Illumini by Steve jackson. The new one is a bit too much like Magic and similar games. The old one is the most original concept I've seen him gaming for a while.
Die Alien Scum.
It is playable but still under development. Turn based dice game with pieces which are lego people much simpler than Warhammer and with only one character each.
Invented by my hubby and developed with me and our son.
And I play a bit of Go.

Illuminati's a great game. So many great groups, I always loved the idea of 'Evil Geniuses for a Better Tomorrow!'
Stratego's good too, as are Kings and Things, Reversi, Risk. Though I think my favourite boardgame has to be 'Civilization'
I love military board games. Squad Leader, Panzer Leader, Risk, Starfleet Battles and more. Two bad no one around me likes to play them.
Big fan of Risk. I introduced it to my room-mates in college we had lots of fun.
I used to be so freakin' loving towards Monopoly, but my dad hated it, in the kindest and funniest way possible. I have a record of only one loss ever in Monopoly so far as I can recall, which is complete opposite on Chess. Won once against my dad, he kicks my ass the rest of the time. I do fine in the beginning, and out of nowhere comes a checkmate. I am totally obsessive compulsive, yet I eventually let my guard down and fail. Technically I've won twice, but that was when I taught a newbie how to play, so I don't count.
There's also a neat little take on chess from Vat19.com which uses lasers and mirroring them to take down the opponent's pieces. It seems cool, but $35 dollars seems excessive to me. Perhaps I'm just a little cheap. ::)

I throughly enjoy strategy games as well. You left out Warcraft and Total War though.
As for board games I love risk, but it takes to long to finish a game. I generally prefer card games over boardgames.
I have played Advanced Squad Leader for 13 or 14 years. It is a very complex, involved game with over 15 thousand counters (pieces), 60 geomorphic boards, many historical maps such as Stalingrad, Pegasus Bridge, Tarawa etc. Games usually take between 4 and 8 hours, more for bigger scenarios. historical modules are played as campaigns, and can take months, or in the case of the Stalingrad module, a couple of years.
I play a ton of Mahjong on-line. It seriously zones my brain right on out.
I'm in love with chinese checkers. And damn it, why is monopoly so addictive?!
Strategy board games:
I really like Pente. I want to play Go, but do not own it.
Many people have mentioned Risk. I have never been able to play with anyone that plays it for real. I would love to.
Chess is always great too.
There is a very obscure and amazing strategy board game called The Gentlemen of South Sandwiche Islands. Very addictive, frustrating, and fun. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1883736289/the-gentlemen-of-the-south-sandwiche-islands/posts
Virtual Board Games:
I like Civilization Revolution. If anyone owns PS3 and that game. Hit me up and we shall play.
Im a "video-game hick" but I do enjoy a game of chess, go, or any card game.

That's a great game not as good as Civilization 4 but still damn fun.
