The Athesit sign that was posted in Seattle as a protest to the display of a creche on city property has disapeared. I'm thinkig atheists should take this in the same light as a frat prank and call it a day. I haven't bothered to read any athiest blogs on it yet, but I'm hoping none of us gets pissy about it. It was kind of nice to have the sign up, though.

You know, I don't know what to think about that. Part of me agrees with you LARA, but part of me (the militant atheist inside) says someone should steal their baby jesus. If they want to infringe upon the first amendment rights of atheists, then they should have no problem with "eye for an eye". Of course, starting such a tit-for-tat "war" with the religious will only look bad for us, no matter who stole what first.

Unfortunately, us atheists have a PR problem, so no matter what we do, it'll look bad for us. That sign was good while it lasted.
They should just put another one back up that includes "thou shalt not steal!" in big red letters.

Oh, man, that made me laugh. I was totally like

I agree with your militant atheist side. If someone took their baby Jesus, they'd be all up in arms, yelling about being beaten down and repressed, freedom of religion, etc. But because an atheist sign disappeared, they're all... aw, too bad, you should have known better.
Hell with that! And they found the sign in a ditch. And the man who transported it to the display location said it's WAY heavy, so people HAVE to have seen it being taken or it was taken during the night when the building should have been locked.
This pisses me off.

i agree with you. if i was there, i would have stolen the baby doll myself.
Maybe... the sign got raptured by the FSM.

That would be perfect!
I suppose you could sue whatever organization could be, plausibly, responsible. Might not win, but you'd get a lot of good pr.

Funny you should suggest that, because the sign was reposted (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/seattlepolitics/archives/156287.asp) with "Thou shalt not steal Exodus 20:15" attached to it.

Great minds think alike? It's also possible that I read about it on some other forum and forgot.
Maybe they should include a quote from the koran as well? In the interest of avoiding, y'know, defamation of religion charges.

Great idea, they should include quotes from all the religions they can think of. Then we can say, "See, it is we that are fair and just." Haha, shoe would be on the other foot...
I'll drink to that. (if only in spirit.

That is exactly why managing entities of every venue displaying Christian decoration must be approached and challenged to permit equal time and space for alternative worldviews including atheism. The solution which such managers will inevitably have to take is to restore the venue to its neutral condition as we see in the airport example.

Hi all, First post on his Forum. Just wandering what we atheists should recomend our contribution to Christmas Decorations should be? How about a sign above the nativity stating "All characters and events depicted are purely fictitious. Any similarity between persons or events is purely co-incidental".
All the best
Chris
