Title: New Guy
Post by: Stunty on August 27, 2008, 01:17:58 AM
Just like the title says - 'New Guy' - except, of course, I'm not. Far from it - I'm actually quite old... Old, that is, for a human.

In fact, I'm 40 years old, married to a beautiful woman, and I have a wonderful 6 month old daughter: and that, my friends, is, I guess, why I'm here.

Let me give you a little background:
I was adopted from birth through the Catholic Church into a loving Catholic family. Until the age of 13, every Sunday, I was dragged - (kicking and screaming I might add) - to mass and Sunday school. For all the sermons I experienced and all the bible lessons I was forced to endure, I never once understood what it was those people were trying to convince me of. It was on my 13th birthday, my parents sat me down and, rather commendably, asked me if I'd like to continue going to church and Sunday school. It was with a great sense of relief that I informed that I didn't. I was born to be, what I like to think of as a, 'Natural Atheist'.

Since my mid 20s I have been educating myself in the Sciences - (especially physics and genetic biology) - and philosophy.

Now, true to my atheist character, I have always thought about joining groups of other like-minded people with whom I share certain anti-religious convictions - but, just like my pet cat, Schrödinger, I have never been able to help myself from wondering off into other, more immediately interesting, activities.

However, I now wish to make the necessary effort to join such groups as the afore-mentioned, due to the disturbing educational practices of the western civilized world of our young; specifically: human biology & religious education.

In short: I am here to contribute, whatever I can offer, in the defence of reason and common sense, with regards to what we, the body politic, are teaching our children to believe in the classrooms of our, supposedly civilized, schools.

It's a pleasure to be here. Let's try and change the world for the better shall we?

Hey Stunty, welcome to the forum.

I'm guessing you are from the south/bible belt area since you are concerned about the school system not taking a secular approach to education.  From my understanding this is mainly only a southern bible belt problem (I could be wrong) especially in smaller towns.  What do you think we can do let people realize that science is not out to get them and that prayer hasn't been taken out of schools (it's just been taken out of assemblies...the kids can do whatever the hell they want in their own minds).

Welcome to the forums.

I'd have to say, it its possible, get involved with the school somehow.  Maybe try to attend school board meetings and the like, to see where your local public school stands on the un-education issue.

Welcome to the forum, Stunty. Thanks for the introduction. By the way, you aren't officially "old" yet. You're at the top of the hill ready to go over it!  :D
