Title: What is the reasoning behind our avatars?
Post by: Vocaloldfart on May 14, 2025, 12:09:26 PM
What ae we trying to convey to all and sundry with our avatars?
Are they a reflection of our character or desires, perhaps to identify with some philosophy or thought?
What meaning is there in them?
I identify with mine, which just happens to be also identified as an atheist symbol, came about from an incident between me and my dog.

My dog Monty was on my lap while seated on my sofa.
I have been a keen meditater all my life.
I took this opportunity to go into the deepest level of meditation I could manage.
I "saw" myself as in my avatar only I "saw" myself a blacker and denser. roughly the size of a soccer ball. I "saw"  Monty, similar but only the size of a cricket ball.

This was a golden opportunity to really communicate with another species. So I said to Monty "hello how".......That was as far as I got, from sleeping peacefully on my lap, he jumped off, growled at me, gave me a quizzical look  and went and hid behind the sofa.
This to  me confirmed that I had indeed communicated with him as with his respone.
I have not been able to repeat the experience since, but I do try on occasions.
 What is your story??

I find the existence of gamma ray sources in our atmosphere fascinating. (I hold a B. Sc. degree in physics). Here's a short description of the phenomenon.

Oh right, I missed the "G'day" from your introduction.

The Magic Pudding, consume as much as you like, he will reconstitute.

I'm a bean counter professionally, innately.

A metaphor for the Earth, there are so many billions now.

The stylish purple hat, black glove and cricket bat, that's another story

Thank you for that link. My studies were/ are medical, however my interests are very broad. I am of the opinion that knowledge is not heavy but carries a lot of weight.
I have read a bit of plasma physics. Fascinating subject although I can't grasp the nitty gritty details.

This avatar is a loosely interpreted depiction of the username. I know that the "Laughing Cavalier" isn't a cavalier in the sense implied thereby, but it's an image I enjoy. The username was the name of a bicycle many long years ago. However the bike was named not for the recusants from British history but in the tradition of adjectival names of ships e.g. Intrepid--recusant in the generic sense of the word.  From the Oxford English Dictionary:

QuoteAdjective:  Refusing to acknowledge authority or to comply with a command or regulation. Also in predicative use.

I believe that.  :worried:  :couchhide:

As for mine, it's been so long I don't really remember anymore,  other than I like silver more than I like gold.

We have missed you Silver.  Missed the googly eyes too.

I hope that you are well, prosperous, and happy in your career as a brain doc.

It's an admirable handle, with nice resonance. It has a sphinx hiding in it too.  :smokin cool:

It's Star Catcher from G3 My Little Pony. I used to play with MLPs when I was little, so I like to sometimes have MLP icons, just because, gotta have some childhood happiness in these dark times, right?

(It was only recently that I realized that the colors of it make it look like it's some pony designed with the colors of the transgender flag, but it's nothing but a coincidence. Still, trans people are cool and don't deserve all of the nonsense against them that's happening right now, so if it's taken that way, so be it. lol.)

. . . And then we started talking about woodwinds--relevant to our esteemed woodwind enthusiast Harmonie posting in this thread above. Woodwinds certainly deserve their own thread and it's one of my jobs here to facilitate that sort of thing. Split to the Music board, the new thread (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,17815.0.html).  :computerwave:
