Hello Folks,
I recently typed the following into Google just to see what the results would be , "happy to be an atheist". This message board was the first hit. So I went ahead and signed up. I'm looking forward to a bit of good discussion with like minded people.
A bit about me, I'm a husband and a father and until about 2 years ago I was a devout Christian evangelical. I was "converted" at an early age so I went into adulthood blind to my own ignorance. One day I accessed a previously unused brain cell and I realized that I was surrounded by hippocracy, greed, vanity, and downright bad people in my church. That was the catalyst to my journey toward freethinking/atheism. That's the short version, probably similar to many other's versions of the unconversion. Anyway, I'm happier and more content that I have ever been in my life. I'm not saying everything is perfect in my life, but now I have the ability see the world for what it is and act accordingly rather than relying on an unspeaking diety figure to take care of things for me. Talk to you all later.
Welcome to the forums! Enjoy the dancing bananas :banna: :banna:
turn around, let me smell you...
welcome, this forum keeps growing and growing. it seems to attract some really smart and freethinking people...you'll fit in just fine.
yes, the dancing banana, you should get used to him.
Who the hell can't love a dancing banana? Count me in as a dancing banana lover - hope that doesn't sound too gay ??
Welcome to the forum, freeatlast. Thanks for the intro. Yep, a few people with similar backgrounds floating around here. I'm one of them, although my deconversion happened longer ago.
And major, major points for the Snoopy avatar!
Welcome to the forum.
You'll find a lot of good conversation available here.
Hi Free, welcome to the forum
Welcome, freeatlast! Hope you have a great time here! :banna:
A fellow Texan!:D I just registered as well so hello all
Welcome fellow Texans.
Welcome! Another person who has finally found the beauty of atheism, good for you.
Have fun!
Yay, another fellow Texan. I'm new here as well. What part are you from?
Looks like I found a good thread, unfortunately it seems to be stagnant. I would love to talk more with people from Texas.
If any of the texas people are in the DFW area...I organize a Dallas meetup (there is more than just my meetup in Dallas which you may want to check out too) and am friends with the people who organize the FW meetup. Go to meetup and search for Freethinkers of Dallas or Freethinkers of Fort worth...or just click the link below.
If you aren't in the area and know of a meetup or event elsewhere in Texas (I know many cities have them) post it here:

Whereabouts in south Texas are you posting from?
Quote from: "Squid"Whereabouts in south Texas are you posting from?
Well Squid, looking at your profile, I realize we are really close in proximity. I live in Floresville, TX, maybe 70 miles from you. I actually work in San Antonio, right off of I 35.
In Texas 70 miles is still "in the neighborhood". I'm stuck here in San Marcos until at least August. From there I'm not sure where I'll end up - Austin, Dallas, Corpus, San Antonio...just where ever a decent job may be found.
I agree, 70 miles can be a trip to the grocery store in some cases. San Marcos isn't too bad, it sure isn't Austin though. What kind of work are you in?

San Marcos is "ehhh", Austin is mucho bettero. Work, well aside from enduring the horrible trial known as gradschool, I was working as a research assistant but the department had to pay more for equipment then they thought and didn't get as much from their grants as they thought so the first thing to go - grad students. So I have to find a job to pay the bills in the mean time. Before I started as a research assistant in August I was working from a non-profit organization out of Austin and I worked in the Luling school district as a service-learning youth advisor. It was a pretty cool job, a lot of independence and flexibility. I now regret leaving it but all well.
That sounds quite rewarding (the non-profit org.). As far as finding new jobs, I'm sure something will come up. Do you know of any groups (freethought, atheist, etc.), formal or informal, that meet up around our area (San Antonio and surrounding)?

No I sure don't. But I've never really looked either.
Hidy
I just joined tonight, so one more sane Texan is here.
We had an incredibly cute tiny terrrier in the 90's named Squid.
Freeatlast--like your name and the interesting built-in conflict.
My Rock solid atheism feels guilty every Sunday afternoon for the two hours of by KKDA AM's glorious gospel music. The music is SO beautiful. One of the old-time gospel quartet numbers they play is Free At Last. And no-one can deny that Rev. Dr. King's "Free at Last. . . " is one of the best things for America.

Really? Where exactly? 281? 181? 35?
I'm not some psycho trying to find you, lol. Just always interested in finding people with whom to talk.
You've probably seen the large sign on the southside on old pleasanton road that says, "PLACE TO SHOOT?" (can't remember if there's a question mark or not. >_<) I live about 6 miles south of there.

Oh yeah, I know exactly where that is. Me and my dad used to go to that shooting range when I was a kid.
