So, there's going to be a new addition to the pack in mid-March, a male German Shepherd puppy named...named... :notsure:
I came up with a list but people have found issues with each of my suggestions. In the order I thought of them:
Loki - God of mischief sounds perfect, but what if he's turns out to be an obedient dog?
Finn - People have a difficult time saying this, comes out as 'Finny'
Duque (Duke) - "Too aristocratic", my mother said.
Alex - short for Alexander, meaning 'protector of mankind'. "Too common".
Jaeger - "Wut?" said my mother. "How about Hunter instead?"
Iago - I think this is a nice-looking word but a Shakespearean villain just isn't a good fit.
*deep breath*
Kaiser - "Like the beer?"
Skyler - "Meh."
Benji - "Small dog name"
Kenji - means 'strong and vigorous' in Japanese. Mom: ::)
Asher - "What, as in 'Ash'?"
The list goes on...
She suggested Argos based on Odysseus's dog of Homer's The Iliad. It's different...and nerdy, so that gets a plus from me. I'm still undecided, though. :-\
Anyone have any suggestions? It can be in other languages other than English, too. Preferably 2 syllables at most.
What I know about the pup is he's going to be strong and determined, according to the breeder, and both his parents are mostly black with a bit of brown on their legs and chest. It's likely nameless will be similarly coloured.
Eye-Byte (I bite)
Scooby (From the cartoon - not sure what kind of dog Scooby is anyway.)
Schweinhund - (German for pig-dog. Well, he is a German Sheppard, right? Never mind.)
I don't know. I'm the person who named a cat once called "Meow". Well, I asked the cat what it wanted to be called and she said, "Meow." So Meow it was.
Anyway, pay no attention to me,
Rolf. I picture you standing on the porch, calling him. ;D

Well, he has a microchip, so...
LOL When I was young I would help and feed stray and feral dogs on the street and named one of them 'Dog' just because I wasn't able to come up with another name. Meow is a good one! Perhaps it means something in Cattish.

How about Ajax -- yes, I know, the cleanser, but I like the way it sounds.

I like Hope! :tellmemore: It's a good name.
I like Ajax too (
Ájax, in Portuguese, would sound a little different). Rolls off the tongue. Easier to shout than 'Argos'. :snicker:
Please pardon my sad and still angry recollection of an episode in the not too distant past. It involves a dog. The dogs name was Deeogee That is a combination of the letters D,O,G He was a helluva lot more than a deeogee
K9s are important members of our police and sheriff departments. One of our heroic Alsatian cops was an official officer of my sherriff's department.
A sheriff deputy and his dog stopped a speeder. The speeder was revealed to be a vicious criminal with a long rap sheet. The perp shot the sheriff, K9 partner dog attacked the perp. The bad guy shot and killed the dog too. That did not sit well with the local citizens, including me, and even less well with the sheriffs deputies. They chased the perp through a thick woods until they found him hiding under a huge fallen log. 64 shots later the bad guy will never kill another sheriff or another dog.
The sheriff deputy was a veteran cop who was publicly regarded as a good and decent guy. The dog was his constant and beloved partner. The dog got every bit as much respect and tears as his human companion did. Rightfully so.
Both the deputy and his dog were buried with full military honors. In Florida a K9 is a fully accredited officer of the law. Deeogee will be long remembered.
Silver, if you name him Ajax, the contraction will become; Jax or Jack. . That is a good and honorable name for a loyal companion.
Of course, I like Loki, because some see him as the Norse equivalent of Hermes,

Choose a name that is easily enunciated and a name that has a dominant first syllable. This is for the benefit of easy recognition by the dog. A sound with a structure such as "Bolo" or something of the sort.
One of my beloved dogs was given the registry name; Midwatch Helmsman. We never called him by that name, he was Sailor. The registry name was appropriate because he did take care of things during the night. His call name, Sailor, was all wrong because he did not like riding in boats at all.
These are the parents:

(Left pic is the mother and the father is on the right)
Aren't they beautiful? :tellmemore: I had never seen a German Shepherd dog with that kind of colour pattern before, apparently they're called "bicolour". 8)
The breeder will send me pics of the puppy this weekend, probably, after he selects the right one for me.

Lago........OK, but please not Mara-Lago.
Silver, I suspect that you are aware that German Shephards have a high incidence of hip dysplasia. Responsible breeders, especially expensive breeders, have their pups carefully x-rayed to determine whether the hip socket tissue and bone is normal. Dysplasia can occur even when both parents are perfectly normal.
Dysplasia is much more likely to occur in larger breeds of dogs. Less prevalent, but not unheard of, in smaller breeds. My beloved Irish Setter, Molly, was dysplastic. I spent a small fortune for a surgical procedure and the ensuing physical therapy that let her be able to run and play. It worked for several years but she finally succumbed to the misfortune of her anatomical flaws. Dear God I loved that beautiful red girl. She was my constant companion.
Where I go, dog follows
Where I stop, dog settles
When I am lost, dog finds me
When I am joyful, dog joins me
Who I am, dog knows
What I need, dog becomes
Please be sure to discuss this with the breeder.

Oh, it's not Lago, but Iago, with an I
Yes, I'm aware of the hip and elbow dysplasia issue, my last German Shepherd had it in her later years. That's why I bought a working-line pedigree GSD (they're closer to the original dogs bred in Germany by the founder of the breed), and not the show line dog with the sloped back and structural issues. IMO, those breeders of those show line dogs are
destroying this awesome breed. :(

Silver I agree that the "show line" profile of the GSD is not the best of options. I do not like that look very much but it does give the dog the appearance of speed. I seriously doubt that the old time Schutshund breeders opted for that kind of anatomy.
My police GSD K9s cost a prince's ransom (about 10 to 15 K) and they do not generally look like the show type. They are all out for business, agility, speed, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty to their handler.
My police department has about 10 K9 (dog) officers. The Lakeland PD K9 unit has won the national championship K9 trials several times. I am really proud of them. More than one of their dogs is a Malinois, not a GSD. The Mals have a different set of behavior patterns but they are equally as efficient in search, find, and withhold duties. They are generally a few pounds smaller than the GSD but still a factor to be reckoned with for the bad guys. Both the GSDs and the Mals are often helicopter transported and have no problem with the noise and tippy activity of the Heli.
A Mal was on the mission when our elite military killed Osama Bin Laden. His duty was to make sure that no one escaped the compound where Osama was hiding. Pretty grim stuff but that is the way the world and its' humans are so seriously fucked up.

I don't like the look of the "frog-legged" show line GSD either. It looks deformed. It may give an appearance of speed but they don't look so stable in their gait.
I paid US$549,23 for the puppy, besides the cost of two additional vaccines and his food. US$549,23 doesn't look like much but that's equivalent to 3,000 of local currency, which is more than my monthly grant money. :money: Why did I agree to pay that much? Exactly because I wanted a healthier dog than my last GSD (which I got from a store).
I loved my last GSD dearly, when I laid eyes on that poop-covered puppy in a metal cage I fell in love with it and took her home. She was ill, and developed parvovirus soon after (unless she was already sick when I took her home, no way of knowing now). The money I had saved (I paid R$100 for her, equivalent to US$18,31 today) by buying from a store quickly blew up into thousands, and she almost died. Twelve years later she lost the use of her hind legs and thousands more were spent trying to ameliorate her condition, until the inevitable choice to finally put her to rest was made.
When I adopted Joy it was the same thing. I adore Joy, but in the past 2 months I have spent upwards of RS$5,000 (US$915,38) on her because of her illness. I'm certain she came to me sick. Maybe I'm just unlucky.
Now I'd rather shell out a huge amount of money for a puppy from a responsible breeder if that means it is less likely to develop certain diseases afterwards. And working-line GSD are less likely in that regard.
I thought about getting a mongrel as they are way less prone to suffer from genetic diseases, but I'm an incurable fan of the GSD breed. ;D

Silver you have gotten a really good deal for the money that you paid.
A good quality GSD in the U.S. is in the four figure range. The Bernese Mountain Dog that I wanted from a reliable, knowledgeable, breeder was almost $3000. :money:
I wish you, Joy, and Lago the best of eventual outcomes surrounded by plenty of love for one another.

R$3000 (local currency) is still 3 grand,
it is in the four-figure range. :-\. That's about three minimum wages (40 hours/week) here in Brazil. I don't spend that kind of money on fixed monthly bills. That's what you pay to rent a good house in an affluent neighbourhood here.
And I bought a male pup. Females from that breeder are 3,500 bucks. :twitch:
But anyway, I believe it's money well spent. Like I said in a previous post, I want a good quality GSD dog.
Call him "Stop That". You'll probably be saying that a lot and he'll eventually respond to it anyway thus killing two birds with one stone.

Congratulation on the new puppy, dogs are so awesome...I swear we hoomans don't deserve them.
There have been a lot of good and funny suggestions...may I suggest Fabian?
It's a good Christian name ::)
When I was young a friend of mine had a dog named Asshole,...yes Asshole! (He was also a German Shepherd)
We loved the name and the dog, and I have to say the dog certainly earned his name, especially when he was a puppy.
Older folk at the time found the name offensive, and his vet refused to list his name as Asshole, he also couldn't get him tagged as Asshole by the city so his official name was "Bob" AKA "Asshole"
I also had a friend who's family's dog was name was "Mister". He told me there were some hilarious times when they would be outside chasing the dog and yelling out his name. My friend said every man in earshot would turn around when they were yelling the dogs name.
One time I was out at the lake with my friend and his family at their cottage, and we had stopped by the local marina, and the dog had gotten out of the car, and my friends dad was yelling at the dog to get back into the car, so he's yelling, "Mister, Mister"!! Damnit Mister, get your ass over here and get in the car"! There was an old man close to the dog and he thought my friends dad was yelling at him so he came over, and asked him what the hell his problem was.
The two of them almost got into a fight....so maybe "Mister Asshole" would be a good name for your pup? 8)

Sad news: Iago will not be coming home on March 8, he will be staying with the breeder for an additional 3 weeks after March 8 as per the vet's recommendation because of Joy's highly contagious illness. :cryandrun:
Joy is well, but even though she is now asymptomatic she will be shedding the virus for some time, and since Iago is still very young he is at high risk even though he had his third shot today. So the breeder's vet recommended Iago get a fourth shot in 3 weeks, then stay another week away from Joy in order to develop a proper immune system response. Being a month older will also lessen the likelihood he gets infected.
So yeah, feeling a little down right now. :sad sigh:
bummer
I'm certain that you appreciate having your new pup being as healthy as can be, so the delayed delivery has to be bittersweet.

Yes, I'd rather wait a few more weeks for the fluffy newcomer to come home and not get sick than risk his health and life. There was a lot of expectation surrounding the new puppy coming arriving next week...I cleaned out the new dog room and everything, so I really felt it when the breeder urged me not to bring him home yet. I'm getting a little worried about introducing Iago to Joy at the end of the month. Joy, having been an only child for the past 3 months or so, is a bit fearful and anti-social around other dogs and Iago, being as big as he is (and will only get bigger) will intimidate her for sure.
Because of her condition I haven't socialised her with other dogs. Just the other day at the vet's she tried to attack a curious Spaniel who just wanted to sniff her butt.
At least he's being well socialised so it's only half the trouble.

 Yes, that's a 3 month old puppy. ;D
That's actually a good idea, introducing the two to each other on neutral ground, as Joy is getting quite territorial. However, I doubt the breeder will allow her to interact with him and then take him back to the kennel because of her contagious disease. He mentioned he has other puppies that would be at risk. But the first introduction will ideally be in neutral territory.
