Yeah, humbug etc.

And now dear friends, snippets from some tales of the childhood of the Saviour of the Universe.

"Was Baby Jesus A Holy Terror?" | The Daily Beast (https://www.thedailybeast.com/was-baby-jesus-a-holy-terror)

QuoteDid he sleep through the night right away? Walk at three months? Will Himself to potty train by the time he was a year old? The possibilities seem endless: Who needs a trip to the liquor store when the toddler can turn water into wine, amirite?

[. . .]

It was a mystery to devout Christians in the early Church, too. They wondered about the temperament of K-12 Jesus and wrote a number of apocryphal stories about his childhood years. If you assumed Jesus was the kind of prodigious angel to turn you green with envy, you'd be wrong. Baby Jesus might be cute, but trust me: you wouldn't like Him when he's angry.

A second-century text, known today as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and in the ancient world as the Paidika or "Childhood Deeds," describes these years in detail. Like most small children, he was a bit of a handful.

To be sure, Jesus is a real help around the house: He produces a whole feast from a single grain, saves his brother James from snake poison and resurrects a construction worker when he dies. On one occasion when his father Joseph is constructing a bed, Jesus stretches the beam of wood so that it fits. How great would he be after a trip to IKEA?

But he's a bit tough to teach: impossible, in fact. Every attempt to teach Jesus fails, and Jesus ends up sassing his instructors. Admittedly, the incarnate word of God and author of creation probably doesn't need a lot of formal schooling, but talk about a disruption in class.

And that's on his good days. On his bad days he's a preschooler with supernatural powers prone to throwing murderous tantrums in public. On one occasion, another child, the son of a priest, disturbs a miraculous pool of water Jesus was playing with. Jesus does the natural thing and causes the child to "whither up wholly." No one likes it when their sandcastle is knocked over, but his reaction is a bit, err, extreme.

In another incident, a more innocent playmate accidentally runs into five-year-old Jesus's shoulder. Jesus takes this a touch personally and utters a curse that kills him. Lovely. When Joseph reprimands Jesus for drawing negative attention to them, Jesus responds by blinding his critics. In an act of corporal punishment that we at the Daily Beast do not condone, Joseph grabbed Him by the ear and "pulled hard." Apparently entering his petulant teenage years prematurely, Jesus told Joseph to stop giving Him grief. After all, the other kid started it. What can you do? Saviors will be saviors.

Yeeeeah...on second thought I don't want the inflatable pool outfit.  ::) Being as clumsy as I am it'll be like a big, inflatable pool crashing into everything in a china shop. I wouldn't even be able to turn without plunging something expensive onto the ground where it will shatter into a gazillion little pieces. I think things through, you see.  ;D

I'm convinced shit talkers don't have a continuous digestive tract. All they have to do is open their mouths for it all to come out.

lol

to me, all modern art is problematic. i look at so much of it and say, what bullshit, whether it's painting , or sculpture, or music, whatever.

then i'll notice something small that makes me stop and say whoa-- there's major stuff going on in all of that that i simply don't understand.

its like reading t. s. eliot's stinking poetry. i don't think i understand it, but i can't stay away.

so i try to look and see whether there's more there than i thjought.

When I was younger I thought so much of it was pretentious bullshit, but that was mostly because of the art snobs who believed they held the golden keys to unlocking art, rather than the art itself: "The artist wanted us to think this and this with this brush stroke here and that and that with this one there..." Unless the artist themselves says it, it's BS to me, and even then I might see something else going on there that was never intended.

So what's the purpose? Modern or abstract art is different than say, a hyperrealistic painting. It takes a lot of talent and practical skill to paint a picture that looks like a photograph. It may not require that level of technical expertise to produce a "modern art" painting, but perhaps that isn't even the point.

A lot of it I don't like, but a lot of it looks cool and aesthetically pleasing. I think it's the kind of thing that you love or you hate, there is no in between.   :P

notice tho that a hyperrealistic painting that looks like a painting doesn't convey anything that a photograph cpouldn't do.

I've never understood why modern art is so popular. It doesn't seem to take any talent to make it and can sell for thousands after the "artist" is dead.

I appreciate, even love, a lot of modern art and music. Some of it cannot be appreciated "cold"; a knowledge of what motivated the artist and the history that led up to the production of a certain work is required. Much of Marcel Duchamp's work is a good example.

I wasn't proselytizing, but if you are interested in getting into "modern" visual art, it would be good to start with the Impressionists, who were ridiculed at the beginning. A warning: it is a rewarding, but potentially harrowing journey!

theyre amazing

espwcially if you look at what was normal in painting before they showed up

everybody was trying to paint what they mentally concieved was thwre. then the impressionists started painting what they actually saw, which was very different.

what you see is light and color. thats not at all what you know or think to be present. people werent painting what they saw bur rather what they imagined

I'm glad to hear that you are willing to give things a chance. I think that most serious modern artists aren't charlatans and have something worthwhile to say. I may not like some of their work, and even hate some of it, but I think that on the whole they are not out to con the public. Susan Sontag said an interesting thing about modern art. She stated that it can be as difficult to understand as modern physics, so it's no wonder that it leaves non-specialists bewildered.
