Post by: susangail on July 01, 2008, 04:07:13 AM
Just simply out of curiosity, do you have a preference?

BC/AD by a wide margin.

I use both informally, especially in conversation (mostly because a lot of people don't know BCE and CE and when I explain it to them, they say, "Well why don't you just say BC/AD?" Ugh!), but BCE and CE otherwise. Some people (fundies) think if you use BCE it's because you're against jeebus or something. Double Ugh!

I use BCE / CE in my classes.
When and if needed we convert dates to the Jewish, Islamic, Hindu calendars.
We also try to keep a running calendar showing the dates.

Students have asked why I don't use BC / AD in my dates.
I smile and tell them I don't care to show preference of one religious system over another.

Ditto. Although, I suppose I show a bit of preference for... none.  ;)

It doesn't really come up, but I prefer CE/BCE.

Some people still insist on making it religious so they say it can be:

before Christian era/Christian era

*groan*

Yeah it's the same. Though some religious people that still want BC/AD say it's different. I'm not sure what the argument is though... I'll see if I can find it.

interesting. Never heard of that before. As an atheist I definitely would prefer that, but no one would understand me.
