Title: Oh, HAF
Post by: xSilverPhinx on October 25, 2016, 01:15:34 AM
The more I feel I really need to come here less, the more I feel like coming here! :sad sigh:

If only I got paid for the amount of time I spend procrastinating my life would be set. :smilenod: This forum, like the rest of the internet, is a lovely distraction when spending loads of time looking things up online is part of your daily routine.  I've considered asking to be temporarily banned so that I could get things done, but while it may look like a simple solution, it doesn't address the core issues. I think I would just spend my time looking at other forums or sites instead.

Anybody else as easily distracted? How do you deal with that particular problem? What tips would you give a person who lacks in the self-discipline department such as myself?

Hmm, I don't have any great ideas, but will offer a possible route: Use surfing/forums as a reward for yourself. Get through half an hour of solid work and then allow yourself 10 minutes of relaxation. Be strict with the time, though, and get back to work for another solid half hour when your allotted free time has passed. Use an alarm (a kitchen timer, for instance) to enforce this.

That could work. I'll give that a try tomorrow. :smilenod:

Grazie.

The Asmo, the most deserviest of all Asmos, doeth use The Interwebs as a ways of rewarding Himself for His hard work of spreading Grayness, Grumpiness and Evil deeds on The Interwebs.

As my teacher used to drill into my head, "it's easier to stay out, then to get out"

This had to do with temptation. Basically, don't put yourself in the situation in the first place to make yourself a victim. And when you want to get out, GET OUT. "Admit it, and quit it."

I know your problem well, I only wish I could offer an answer. :-\

My plan is to start with Recusant's suggestion of half an hour intervals followed by a ten minute reward session, and hopefully I can train myself to stretch the half hour to one hour, then maybe two hours. Two would be the limit because my concentration just can't last any longer. :P

Having spent 6 decades + refining my procrastinatory skills forums were a worthy addition to my anti-work arsenal. They have saved me a fortune in un-worn-out vacuum cleaners, washing machines etc.

Oh, I have completed necessary non-internet tasks, like going out to purchase wine, pizzas, Chinese take-aways etc.

Not really, but I refuse, as a retired person, to become overly guilty about the time I spend on-line. I was born without the house-work gene anyway, so long as I get up on my hind legs and do not end up as a 200+ pound couch potato, like a guy I know,  so long as I can keep my slim, well, slimish,  140 pounds...

Those are all good. :smilenod: My issue is with deadlines, those satanic creations which are meant to take away all traces of whatever peace of mind we might have!

Why do people like deadlines so much for FSM's sake?! :picard facepalm:

 Reminds me of a lovely South Park episode:

I've managed to focus on my work for 15 minutes.  I'll get to half and hour, eventually.

:sad sigh: I'm already feeling burnt out (which is probably one reason why I can't concentrate for long these days); it's an ongoing battle.

I've decided that today I'm going to push it to at least 20 minutes.

That was not twenty minutes maggot.
You know we know you shouldn't be here.
How much farther do you think you'll fall?
You've forgotten the face of your father
Now, today, we're going to do marching up and down the square!
Resistance is useless
Either die in the vacuum of space, or
tell what you thought of  my poem.
Your culture will adapt to service us.
Resistance is futile

That one's free, I'll have to charge you next time.
It's what I'm doing now, why I've not been around.
I saw a niche and I'm making it my own
Procrastinators, they just need a stern talking to.
Just monitor their internet usage, movements irl
Then you do the pop up with customised invective.
I do disapproving parent, whingey child, sergeant major.
Business is good and I'm going to be hiring soon.
If you think you've got what it takes, now's your chance.
I'd like some nurses, a Trunchbull, teachers, a Zarathushtra or two.

I'll give you a scenario but you can use another.

I've returns due on the 31st,
'n small children I disappoint
I just watch Sean the Sheep

:chin: Well...time is relative. If I'm going to die in the vacuum of space then I might as well be zooming around at speeds high enough to stretch time. One minute to me could be twenty to you, you see.

My self-discipline sucks, I used to be much better at focusing and getting things done. :(

I have until Friday to hand my work in, nothing like a little stress to put things into perspective.

xSP pay attention while Uncle Icarus speaketh words of wisdom.   You are one very bright chick. One has only to read your posts to affirm that impression. BUT you are messing up big time if you fail to live up to your abilities.  So get some perspective about what is in your long term best interests. Focus on your studies, Yes you can do it. When you are 40 or 50 or 60 you will be damned sorry if you  fail to take advantage of what you have going right now. Hit the books girl. I am one of your cheer leaders and I do know what I am talking about.

With that I ask your forgiveness for having the audacity to pry into your personal space.

Thank you for your wise words Icarus, and you don't need to ask for forgiveness. It's great getting feedback like this.

:sad sigh: Not so bright apparently...I dropped out from university twice before because I couldn't deal with the disillusionment, though now that I'm older it's been easier to manage expectations and the reality they clash with. My current advisor is as great as they come and I feel like I'm in the right place at the right time. :) I really don't want to mess this up.

I will finish this paper by Friday. :D
