Title: Hit a deer this morning
Post by: Steeler on June 14, 2016, 01:49:49 AM
Was going to post a pic but I'm too stupid right now on my new phone. Not a lot of damage but it just pisses me off.
Been driving these same roads for 18 years and it finally caught up with me.
Kids were terrified, my son thinking that the police were going to take me to jail for some reason.Lol
New truck too. Damnit!
I will get revenge on that deers family this fall...

Glad you're ok. What happened, did it run right in front?

Oh yeah, I was on a 2 lane highway not far from home, doing about 60 when it shot out of the woods right in front of me in a full sprint. Barely had time to stab the brakes.

Hit a young one of those with The AsmOmega once. "Zero" damage to the car, as luck would have it. A fully-grown one though... That will put a dent in your radiator.

It's a constant hazard round here, too, though luckily I've never hit one.  A pheasant once flew into me and wrote off a headlamp, but the oddest one was when I hit a pig.

Ok, what was the pig doing in the road?

After I was done with the police I drove back to where I hit it, probably only 100 yards or so, but didn't see it. I thought it must have got tossed down in the woods or something.
Well this morning I looked again and found her. I don't know how I didn't see her yesterday but she was laying about 20 foot off the road in the weeds.
She's vulture and opossum meat now.

Since it ran out in front of you, can't say you are at fault. In other words it's not one of those Doh! moments.  Will it cost big bucks for the repairs?

That sucks. I hit one once in my first Subaru doing like 35 on a backroad. Same deal. Fucked up my license plate but otherwise no damage to the car... The worst of it was the deer didn't die, and was lying lame in someone's front yard. Took over and hour for the cops and all to deal with everything, which sucked for everyone but I wasn't about to leave it lying there.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I think that birds are getting dumber.  I hit a buzzard last year, and have almost hit several more since.  They used to get out of the way quickly, but now they start flying in the same direction as the car instead of off to the side out of the way.  And this morning I ran over a small bird that was too slow. I've started adjusting my speed more whereas I never did that before.  Not sure what's going on.

Damn. I've never seen a buzzard that didn't manage to avoid getting hit. Seen a few fly low over the hood but never actually hit one or known anyone to do so. Small birds on the other hand... a friend of mine has a truck with an alternator that "chirps" as he's going down the road. The 8.1 draws em in like a magnet.

I once got hit by an owl. Thankfully it hit more the frame around the windshield, I'd have had an owl in my lap. I circled back to see if he broke a wing or something since I know owls are pretty protected, but I couldn't find him.

Also, I've almost hit the same damn squirrel on my way off my street three days in a row. He's already got a crooked tail. Idk why he keeps pushing his luck.

I haven't gotten an estimate yet, waiting for the police report to be completed. Luckily it didn't get any metal parts, just several plastic bumper pieces and a fog light. But it's a painted bumper so it will have to be painted to match.

Good to hear! I've been deer hunting for 25 years and believe it or not, that is the first doe I've ever killed. Lol
I just don't like taking doe.
