Title: What's your favourite pie?
Post by: Claireliontamer on March 14, 2016, 06:48:18 PM
It being Pi day and all......

For me savoury is a tough one as there are a few contenders but I think if I had to pick just one it would be a chicken, leek and bacon pie.

Sweet is easy - pecan pie.  In fact, I have one in the oven right now.

When I was a young boy I used to really like the frozen Turkey Pot Pies by Swanson, sometimes on Sunday morning's I would wake up hours earlier than the rest of the family and heat one up in the oven, my dad thought I was nuts.

And there's an Irish Bar I used to hang out quite a bit which had the best Shepherds Pie in the galaxy, but I haven't had it in years which is cause for sadness.

Otherwise apple pie is the best, hands down...I'll fight anyone who suggests otherwise, though Claire I would love to try your pecan pie.

If I gave you my address could you ship me one? ;D

Ooo shepherd's pie is a good call.  I'd forgotten about potato topped pies, maybe they should have their own category.  I do like a good fish pie too with a potato crust.

I'm not a big fan of apple pie, I like apple if it has something else in like blackberries.

And suuuuuure Bruno, I'll ship you a pie..........*evil laugh* I'll get that Liverpool fan!

I want to say chocolate pie, but that's because I'm a whore for chocolate. It's really just whipped cream, pudding and Oreos, which feels wrong. A proper pie ought to be baked.

I love pecan pie, but it's got to have the proper ratio of pecans to karo syrup.

I really can't decide. Any kind of cream pie is delicious, as is pumpkin and sweet potato pie. Of course you can't go wrong with Dutch apple pie.

Cherry pie if the cherries are tart and the filling not too sweet. Second place is pecan pie, third; mincemeat which can be almost be sidelined as plum pudding.

My long ago deceased wife made the best apple pie in the universe. She was a New England Yankee and was really picky about the kind of apples she used. McIntosh I think they were. Additionally she had some magic way of making the crust that would be the envy of a Kings chef.

You should try my mom's chocolate pie, it's my oldest brother's favorite. So good he had all his teeth pulled at the ripe old age of 26! Which makes me wonder, did the recipe (also known as recipie) thread survive the crash? If it did, I'll post hers for you sometime. It's pretty good.

Personally though, I like a coconut pie if we're talking sweet. Sausage pie if you want my all time favorite. Dang sausage pie is good.

No. Just wondering how many people would get it. And if I'd put it on the pun thread there would be no context to make it a pun would there?

Custard pie. I used to love that stuff, sadly the restaurant that used to make it when I was a kid completely changed their recipe and I haven't had it since. T.T

Yep, true dinks.  Had one once at an emu farm, it was fabulous. Since then have been able to get some emu meat on occasion from specialist poultry suppliers. A gorgeous meat more like red meat than normal poultry, has a unique flavor like it is spiced somehow. Delicious!

I had ostrich once but didn't think it was all that great, it was tougher than chicken, but tasted a little like chicken, which made it seem like...expensive dry chicken.  ::) I'll assume that it is nothing like emu meat then.  :P

Meat pie with tomato sauce.
What the meat is uncertain.
It's all part of the mystique.

Hmm. I've always gone for emu thigh meat, but like any game emu is very lean and needs to be cooked quickly and not over done so as not to dry out. I.imagine the same might apply to ostrich. However I know not all chefs know how to handle game. Kangaroo which is also very lean is delicious if handled properly, but I have had some absolutely terrible roo in restaurants - dry, tough and tasteless.  Maybe that is what you ran into.

Steak and kidney pie with no kidney.  There's rarely much kidney in them anyway.
