With the recent events that happened in Paris the obvious gut reaction is war but is this the wisest decision. For me I think it is the worst thing they could do, in the conventional sense of war any way.
The strikes the French Government had been doing are successful and ISIS can't do anything about it and what we saw yesterday was their retaliation. From this alone we know France already has the upper hand and really all they need to do is increase what they have been doing whilst focusing on local targets to prevent attacks like last night. What's more ISIS have been pining for ground troops as they see it as the beginning of the end of days which they are wanting to bring on as fast as they possibly can, by going to war and bring troops into the various regions they are located France would be giving them exactly what they want.
Viruses like isis should be eradicated by any means necessary! Teach these agents of terror, what terror truly is!
For every one they kill, slaughter thousands of them! Show absolutely no mercy!
There are an estimated five to six million moslems living in France (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_France), most of them in a few major cities. These have repeatedly shown their ability to do enormous damage. In taking on Islam, France would have to fight a huge civil war internally. It would probably be unwise not to assume that there are already large groups prepared for this.

If France (any country for that matter) are to stay within the guides of the United Nations they can't do that. The other option is long and drawn out war that ends up effecting more civilians than those they are trying to fight which in turn creates more opponents to fight. ISIS themselves were spawned due to this sort of situation. Even though ISIS have a clear hierarchy that can be targeted they still use guerilla tactics to prevent the sophisticated armies being able to easily take them out, knowing full well that nations also have their hands tied behind their back when fighting due to war laws.

Good point especially when they have places like La Courneuve that have recently been religiously violent. Then you had the attacks last December that were independent but religiously motivated.
War was already declared when France decided launch airstrikes against ISIS in Syria.
I don't know what to think, as of yet. I'm leaning towards thinking that all out war against ISIS is not ideal, and it seems to me that people who are too quick advocate for it have nothing to loose personally. I don't myself, it's just an opinion.
Some sort of action is required, passivity is not the answer, but I tend to think that backstage actions would be more effective in the long run, lead to less loss of life and are more economically viable.
And of course, absolutely no religious connotations should be given to WWIII, and I don't just think that because I'm an atheist. That just feeds into their propaganda and will actually only help them recruit more jihadis. Some Christians here have already flared up with calls for a new crusade against the Islamic world. People are afraid.
Lily-livered, yellow bellied, gutless cowards such as isis prey on the decency of good men. It is high time to fight fire with massive amounts of "DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN" ordnance! This response reminds me of a brilliant episode of Babelon 5. The docking crews were going to go on strike for better conditions. The 'company rep' wanted the union crushed. To do this he wanted the commander to invoke 'special powers' allowing the striking workers to be imprisoned and evicted. But in actuality the 'special powers' gave the commander total discretion in his actions to solve the problem. In the past commanders had always taken the punitive route. So the commander asked what funds would be made available to him. The 'company man' said 'write your own check'. So the commander did just that and gave the docking crews their raise; thus solving the problem.
You wrote "Viruses like isis should be eradicated by any means necessary!" But then go on to advocate the course of action ISIS want and that will just breed more of their kind.
Can you imagine how different the Middle East would be if every penny/cent spent on arms and warfare had been spent on aid and education? Go on think about it. We'll never fight our way out of this shit because fighting begats fighting. If we want to destroy ISIS for good we have to kill its ideological roots and we won't do that by killing those who want death.
Very well put, Tank!
What ISIS really wants (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/384980/). An interesting article.

Quite so. Once the blood starts flowing then there is little incentive on either side to stop it.
I think the ISIS' deeds go deeper than revenge. It's about undermining democratic principles and human rights. If we want to win this battle, we have to stand together and don't let fear tear us apart.
But, of course, I know that solidarity alone won't defeat them. So, while I'm usually not pro-war, but in the case of terrorists there's no diplomatic alternative. We'll have to fight. Not just France, but every country. The next point is that drones are not precise enough to kill the targets radically. Increasing numbers of civilists are killed in these attacks, what spreads mistrust among local people. I assume, at some point they'd rather cooperate with the ISIS than being killed without being guilty of anything.
We should send troops to these regions. Even if this wouldn't prevent all civic victims, it'd miniimize them and destroy their bases radically.
I disagree with the notion that regular troops should be sent into the region. That was tried in the past and did not work. Likewise bombing campaigns may not work as intended either as the collateral damage will just make more people in the region anti-western.
I think the best approach here would be targeted actions with special forces raids on the leadership of IS. Take out or capture as many military, political and clerical leadership figures as possible in the shortest amount of time possible. When they have all been replaced, do it again. After enough leaders are taken down or taken in no one is going to want to be boss anymore.

Hahaha you would start WW3 with that one. Are you getting a bit nostalgic for the old days?
No, but it would be such fun. ;)
It appears that I am in the minority here, but that is ok. Let me be clear, I am not here to tell anyone they are wrong, or belittle their opinion. However, to me, this is the mindset they prey on. That we are not strong enough, we are cowards and do not have the resolve to weather their storm. These gutless turds only understand one language, violence. They must be taught, that not only are we fluent in the language, but we have a much, much deeper understanding of it then they ever will. If they want to step on the field with the big boys, they have no right to cry about how hard they get hit.
Do I wish that petty, insignificant nonsense such as color of skin, sexual orientation, patch of earth you call home, or imaginary friends wasn't a reason to kill your fellow man? Of course I do. But sadly, the human being is a deplorable, disgusting species. I agree that there are times when talking like civilized creatures can bring solutions. There are also times when out thinking those that wish to do you harm is the answer. In my opinion, this is not one of those times. isis does not want to show anyone who does not agree with their twisted little view any mercy, I for one, do not want to waste any on them!
Just so you know, I consider the kkk, neo-nazis, the bloods and crypts and any other group of mindless hate filled barbarians to be viruses too. Just like isis. They all need to be obliterated!

I get that you're angry - who isn't? - but allowing anger to dictate what one does can cloud one's judgement. As an exercise, if it were up to you, what tactical steps would you take towards dealing with this situation?

I don't think they deserve mercy either. They've been digging their own graves for quite a while. I don't think that passivity is the answer, but overblown violence isn't either. It has to be surgical, precise and lethal without too much bloodletting. Preferably as silent as possible.
They should be economically crippled, which might involve war with sovereign countries funding them, if there are any. This has the potential to turn into a dangerous chain-reaction.
As Tank mentioned earlier, violence begets violence. Why do you think they are fighting in the first place? I'm not defending Daesh, I'm just worried about the outcomes some routes have as consequences. The fanatics are bombed to the ground, then what? Give them the martyr's death they so desperately want? How does that play into their ideological war and propaganda with which they recruit countless people?
But I have to admit that I love OldGit's idea of nuking Mecca.
xSPs link to; what ISIS really wants, is scary as hell. It is a lengthy article, that if true, is the wake up call that we are failing to acknowledge. The overview of the article would suggest that our only hope for survival is to commit genocide against the fundamental Islamists. That is a grim prospect, an unthinkable one for the western world.
Our Pentecostal are waiting for the "rapture" in relative peace. The hard case ISIS line of reasoning is that they must kill or conquer or enslave all the apostates before the Islamists have their end times. Mind boggling stuff.

They're scary, but not as scary as they want to make themselves out to be, I think. They're not unlike a small animal puffing itself up to make itself look bigger than they really are. Terrorism can amplify feelings of fear to achieve this by making people believe that there's one of them around every corner, that could attack at any moment. They might take responsibility for every attack that happens, even if carried out by insane lone attackers who will be seduced by their propaganda. They're a dangerous entity making use of dangerous ideology, I but I don't think they're that competent to reach their goal, especially since they depend so much on reactions to their acts of violence.
I don't know. I think that if they were strong, they probably wouldn't be using terrorism as a tactic.

Wars fought a long way from base do not seem all that successful. The world surely does not want WW3 but something needs doing. I suppose that is what we are discussing.

As an exercise, if it were up to you, what tactical steps would you take towards dealing with this situation?
For this exercise scenario, I agree, it has to be precise and lethal. It also has to be complete! Total and utter annihilation of isis. Russia, France, Great Britain, the U.S. and anyone else who wants to rid the planet of this virus needs to join in a massive bombing campaign. Merciless and relentless. Drop bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat. When that campaign is over, repeat.
I will not only destroy you physically, but emotionally, psychologically, financially and more importantly, spiritually! Along with the explosions as far as the eye can see, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth! When I find you, and imprison you, I will force you to wear clothes of pork, you will sleep on a bed of pork. Everything you drink or eat will be made of pork. When it comes time to execute you, you will bathe in pig's blood before I hang you with a rope of pig intestines. I will send you to the great beyond to meet your god as a filthy pig!
These sorry sacks of shit find children to be acceptable targets. As I said, if you want to play with the big boys, don't cry how hard you get hit. If you want to play down and dirty, dont whine when I show you I am the fother mucker who bitch slaps you at your own game!
:folded:
Al Qaeda met that fate, then Daesh came into existence. Surely they're not going to be the last.
Isn't one definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

That's what Einstein said. And he was a bright cookie as far as I am aware.
As I said, I am not here to tell anyone they are wrong. As for the next million extremists, bomb them out of existence too. If they all have to die, so be it. Obviously, you don't think brute force is the answer, I do. Let's just agree to disagree, and move on.
So, how about this weather? Is that shit crazy or what?

Why brute force nobody has the money to do that or the resources. There are far more efficient methods, all are considered a war crime for a reason and that isn't even considering whatever DARPA has cooked up over the last few decades and is sitting on.

OK then. No, I don't bombing them into oblivion is the answer, it's too messy and will be used against you. I think they should go straight for the jugular where ever that is, quietly.
One more thing before I move on:

Do you know someone named,
MusicLovingAtheist? Just curious. :shifty:
The weather
has been crazy! Cold one day, hot the next.
The prospect of bombing them back to the stone age has a basic problem. The problem is that the ISIS participants are radical Islamists. Because of that, they truly believe that martyrdom is pleasing to Allah and great rewards in heaven will be theirs. These people wear suicide vests with which they proudly kill themselves. When they survive a firefight they are actually derided by their peers for not completing their martyr mission by dying in battle.
With that, the more of them that we kill the better their collective prospects for life after death. They are serious about dying before the end times that they believe is coming soon. Their sole mission on earth is to convert every living person to Islam and institute Saharia law every place. It is beyond our imagination, certainly beyond our understanding, that mind sets such as theirs could even exist. But those mind sets do exist.

I just asked because
No one sounds like
MLA, he also had some pretty radical ideas. He didn't like certain groups of people and thought they were viruses that needed to be obliterated.
No one hasn't told us anything about himself/herself, so I thought he/she might be
MLA with a different name.

Well here is a little tid bit about yours truly, I like individual persons, but I hate people.
I think some countries should put a bunch of soldiers in Dabiq, Syria and call ISIS out to the final battle they want. Either they accept the challenge and get wiped out. Then only the most extreme followers, like those that kept sticking with Harold Camping, will stay with them when the end of the world doesn't happen. The alternative is that they don't accept the challenge, and then only the most extreme followers will stay with them. The only unfortunate side effect will be to the people in Dabiq, Syria for hosting several large armies.

I find that feeling that way about most people takes so much energy, I'd rather save all my vitriolic hate for just a handful.
I hate humans in general. They are a vile, wretched truly revolting species. For all their intelligence, they are without a doubt the most senseless, harebrained creature on the planet.
I honestly believe that is the whole universe was a school and all the planets with intelligent life attended it, earth would take the short bus to get there.

You use 'they' and 'their' like you're trying to distance yourself from the species. Surely you're human too? ;)
I wish I could say that humankind are almost harmless, but that isn't the case. We as a species lack maturity.

In regards to the military side of things, he seems to be in favor of a more surgical approach, rather than "massed army units."
Malcolm Nance is quite persuasive and likely to have been in a better position to analyze the situation than we.
The plot thickened today when some Turkish F16s shot down a Russian plane. The Turks say that the Russian plane violated their air space. The Russian planes have been doing that, previously unimpeded, because some of their targets were very near the Turkish/Syrian border. In those prior cases the targets were ISIS installations. Russians got a free pass. Not this time. In this case the Turks believed that the target was a rebel group, not ISIS. The rebel group is largely composed of Turkish personnel. Putin is rattling his saber. Turks are pretending outrage.

Interesting, though he wrote this in April and claimed Boko Haram would be defeated within a month, which clearly didn't happen. Also, IS may have been involved in the Ankara bombings, but that hasn't changed Erdoğan's focus from the Kurds. Not sure what will work to move Turkey against the IS short of an assassination attempt against their leaders, sadly.
Came across this today. It's about Israel, but fairly applicable to the Middle East in general. Very dark humor.

That was pretty good Recusant. The Israelis toward the end should have been toting Galils though. ;)
