Thanks Crow!!!!!

To clarify...I'm not yet standing as an MP, I've just been nominated;  have to wait and see if anyone contests it first.  I think JJ is a little excited.........

Wow I think that's fantastic Claire, simply wonderful news, if I could vote for you I would, and tell OldGit to make a contribution to your campaign in my name (I'm good for it ;))

I wish you good luck, and try to contain yourself JJ ;D;

To think I know the future PM of England, wow!

Not sure.  It's the first time in Leeds that we're aiming for a full slate of candidates so it's all pretty new.  We've had a 275% increase in members since the start of the year though so who knows who may come forward!

Wow! I am impressed and certainly proud that Claire has even been mentioned for the office of MP.

It is sad to say that she will almost surely need to stay in the closet.......unless I read the Brit electorate incorrectly.

If you mean that she'll have to not proclaim her atheism then you may have read the situation incorrectly. A politician's theistic/atheistic stance is rarely mentioned over here. The exception being those attempting to gain a foothold in a theistic community. Unfortunately should Claire get to be an MP it won't be her theistic inclination, gender or politics that the 'Red Top' papers will pick on her for, it'll be her height  :(

Why should the fact I'm shorter than average even be an issue? If that's the only 'dirt' they dig on me I'll be relieved!!!!

It won't be an issue for anybody that matters. It shouldn't matter to anybody. Do you have any other dirt to dig up  :D

If she doesn't they will make it up. But just from the stuff CLT has posted on here over the last few years is more than enough to start the spin machines churning, if I didn't like the CLT I'd give you an example of how to turn normal harmless stuff into bile filled nastiness.

A little perspective...... the seat I'll be standing in hasn't had a green candidate since 1992 and then they got 0.82% of the vote!

They can make up what they like but I doubt they'll be that interested in me!!!

But isn't it your job to now try and tempt people to the green side? Say you manage to capture 10% that could be more than enough to upset the traditionally dominant party of that area.

It's really unknown territory but Labour have a stronghold in Leeds as a whole.  There hasn't been a green option locally for so many years so I'm really starting from scratch.  If the national picture is anything to go by, we're polling at about 10% in the opinion polls and like I said earlier we've had a huge surge in membership.  But in summary yes I'll be using my local contacts to tempt as many people to the green side as possible!

Serious question. What is the Green party policy on fission based nuclear power?

We haven't been serious so far!?

The simple answer to your question is that we're an anti-nuclear power party.  We're very much in favour of renewables and the big emphasis is on reducing energy need.

The actual policy, all of which can be viewed here....http://policy.greenparty.org.uk:

QuoteEN261 We will cancel construction of new nuclear stations and nuclear power will not be eligible for government subsidy; the Green Party opposes all nuclear power generation and is particularly opposed to the construction of new nuclear power stations, electricity from which is likely to be significantly more expensive per unit supplied than other low-carbon energy sources, and too slow to deploy to meet our pressing energy needs. Cancellation will avoid the costs and dangers of nuclear energy and waste being passed on to future generations long after any benefits have been exhausted.

EN262 Money earmarked for new nuclear plant research, development and construction will be reallocated to energy efficiency measures and renewable energy infrastructure, but sufficient funding for decommissioning redundant power stations, and for research into the safe storage or disposal of existing radioactive waste stockpiles will be retained.

There are political connotations to be considered.
There is much to be said for a sustainable toot.

Claire should hire Eric/Marvin to make up salacious lies about your opponents that can be mass distributed.

On a serious note, perhaps you should go back and sanitize your posts on this forum, if any need sanitizing.

That's the killer point. Does your party differentiate between fission and fusion nuclear power? What is your party's position on alternative fission fuels such as thorium instead of uranium? What if a new nuclear technology were to be discovered what would your party's position be about funding research? What would your party do about funding 'blue sky' research into nuclear fission/fusion to simply find out what we don't know?

Sorry I meant to come back to this but then Christmas got in the way.  The party has a very strong scientific research policy and is for increasing funding into research especially any renewable energy programmes.  The problem with nuclear fission is that it's never going to be renewable and is always going to produce waste to be dealt with and is potentially dangerous....you only have to look at Fukushima for example.  Personally I'd rather live in and have my children grow up in a nuclear fission free environment especially when alternatives exist.

Nuclear fusion is a little different and this is probably where I disagree to some extent with the current policy as I think we should differentiate between the two.  On the whole though I agree with more of the Green Party energy policy points than any of the other parties.  For instance, we're the only party to come out to be anti-fracking which is something I strongly agree with.

I think it would be weird if a political party matched ALL your personal views.  All Green Party policies are devised and voted on by all members who go to conference, we don't have specialist policy writers.  In fact I have a motion at conference in May to rewrite sections of our mental health policy and I think there is also a motion on nuclear power so it'll be interesting to see what the outcome is.

There needs to be a serious look into nuclear from the green parties position especially on He-3.
