Title: Creationism takes the cool out of everything- a rant
Post by: LARA on April 23, 2008, 07:05:40 PM
I just want to have a happy meaningless life.  Not shallow, not cruel, just meaningless.  I want to look at the dried out remains of of a flattened echinoderm and think "Oh cool, five point radial symmetry", without having some Creationist crap about Christ's wounds and five doves inside pop in my head because some damn fool Christian had to give it meaning for themselves somehow and tell me about it over and over.  I want to make a smart ass joke or observation and not have to have someone second guess what I'm saying to determine if I'm on Jesus' side.  I want to look through my wildflower book and look up Shepherd's Purse without having to wonder if some shit head was trying to tag how much God love's us when he named the stupid plant.  I want to think about dogwood trees just for being dogwood trees and not God's eternal motherfucking love.  I want to think about intelligence from complexity and ponder the wierdnesses of life without having to have someone think that it automatically means their imaginary friend Yaweh exists.  I want to have my own imaginary friends that I know quite well are imaginary without having someone tell me they are wrong because they aren't Christian, or I'm crazy because so many people take things to an extreme that I can't have any fucking fun anymore.  I want to look at footprints in the sand and not think of that fucking poem that every one seems to have shoved down my throat for ages.  I just want to see the footprints.  I want to look at life and trip in my own way on it's absolute magnificence and meaningless.  I want fish to just be fish, loaves to just be loaves and wine to just be lots of fun to consume.  Even though I did not spend much time in my life exposed to Christianity and was most always critical of it, there is so much Bible bullshit steeping our reality and culture it tries take over everything.  I'm so fucking sick of it, my reaction to it, how it affects the world, others and my own psychology.  There is no meaning in life, you might as well ponder the meaning of a motherfucking triangle.  It just is.  It thinks, it breathes, it eats, it fucks and it has nothing to do with Jesus.

Thank you all for your time.

As someone who love marine biology immensely this has a great deal of resonance.  I was so very fortunate my parents raised me in a secular manner.

Your rant actually made me tear up and think of my Mom who taught me so much about the beauty and wonder of the world through reality.  She bought all of those science pocketbooks about birds, amphibians, rodents, etc. when I was a child.  We took walks in the woods carrying a leaf press and a sketch book.  I learned all about botany and biology, eutrophication and erosion, seasons and tree rings - all at my Mom's side.

I can't imagine anything more beautiful, more sacred than reality.

Damn - I do love a good rant.  LARA, its like we're seeing a whole new side of you!  Bravo - this was awesome.  In particular:

Quote from: "LARA"I want to look at footprints in the sand and not think of that fucking poem that every one seems to have shoved down my throat for ages.
When I first was exposed to that poem I found it embarrassing.  The next few times, and I started eye-rolling.  Now, I swear, I find it vomit inducing.

Cheers!

Fucking word. Do you happen to be an Annie Dillard fan? The last line of your rant reminded me of a chapter from "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" called Fecundity. Here's a quote "I don't know what it is about fecundity that so appalls. I suppose it is the teeming evidence that birth and growth, which we value, are ubiquitous and blind, that life itself is so astonishingly cheap, that nature is as careless as it is bountiful, and that with extravagance goes a crushing waste that will one day include our own cheap lives."

Great book for anyone looking for a suggestion.

Well, Jesus is always on your side. Even when you're not on his. And even when you had stumbled... :)

Good work, Lara! I totally agree with myleviathan's Annie Dillard recommendation - the chapter on fecundity will pretty much restore your sanity when you finally lose it and set fire to the next copy of "Footprints" you run across. Ohh that kind of sounds like fun - anyone up for a bonfire?

Don't they just get you pissed? Well spoken Lara (or written rather).

Quote from: "LARA"I want to look at footprints in the sand and not think of that fucking poem that every one seems to have shoved down my throat for ages.  I just want to see the footprints.

I agree a hundred million percent! I still can't believe I actually found that poem touching and inspiring at one point in my life.
