Has anyone out there ever been attacked from nowhere by several devout Christians? And I don't mean them coming to your door, that I can see coming from down the road.
Not too long ago I was at a party, I was talking with a good friend who is a strong Christian. The party had pretty much died down, it was about 2 in the morning. I made a comment along the lines of how evolution has helped me be more able to digest and process this drink more efficiently. My friend took offense and started something up about creationism. All the sudden the Christians start coming out of the woodwork. I had intended to have a nice peaceful evening of heavy partying.
Instead I was up debating three of them until 5:30 in the morning. They just wouldn't leave me alone, they couldn't just let me go without trying to prove me wrong. Naturally I had to argue my side, I tried to get out of the conversation but they wouldn't leave me alone.
I guess that's where I differ with those who are religious, not on the belief of god, but how I live my life. I don't care what they believe, I'm not going to preach to them. It would be nice to get the same in return. I wouldn't sink tot heir level of trying to convert them. I'm think the path of logic and reason is reachable by anyone of any faith. So that's why I'm on these forums, so I can talk about atheism without being hit...by a Christian Blitzkrieg.
You expect theists not to be preachy? Really? I mean... that's what they do. They parrot what they get from their spiritual leaders, but can't actually argue it because they can't understand what they're repeating. As we saw with impuzzled, they will make the same argument over and over and over. When your source material is 1600 years old, it's difficult to adapt.
Us? We adapt, reproduce, and then pass on our behavioral patterns to the next, stronger generation.
Well I know they're always preaching, but it was 2 in the morning, we were all tired, they shoulda just laughed off my comment. There's a time and a place for all that debating, can't I ever just relax and have a drink?
And as for with Impuzzled, yes I waited eagerly to read each one of his(her?) posts. And yes our way does adapt, with each new generation., I'm only 20, half the age of a lot of the people on here, we may all have completely different views and reasons for our atheism.

Maybe when they get you to communion? *yikes*
ShimShamSam, hi.
Hey yeah that sucks about bible humpers being annoying.
But I have to mention---the butt-holes that kept you up, kept you up cause they were offended.
In another thread with impuzzled, you stated you were offended.
I am just pointing that out.
there is really nothing more annoying than people who get bent from being 'offended.' All offended reffers to is a personal view being upset. Personal views vary.
Whats my point? Dont get offended

. Just say whatever you have to say and be done. Not---'I am offended.' Just completely destroys anything convincing at that point.
well Tacoma, you know, they only get offended because it conflicts with their beliefs. I'd like to bring up some knowledge from Ruffus the 14th Apostle (as seen in Dogma)
He said shouldn't have beliefs, those cause all kinds of problems, but have ideas. People won't die for an idea like they will a belief. He said people took a bunch of good ideas and turned them into a belief structure. So I'm never offended, I just have ideas, I have no beliefs to insult.
Personally, I thought the evolution comment was funny as hell. That was a good joke. Also, it could actually be true. Humans have been consuming alcohol for a great many generations --- it wouldn't be much of a stretch to find some evolutionary change that helps us process alcohol. In the dark ages the beer was a lot safer to drink then the water (alcohol kills nasty bacteria). And now they say there is a net health benefit to 2 dark beers or red wines a day anyway, right? I'm not saying we have evolved to drink alcohol, just saying it could actually make sense.
Pity the theists have no humor --- plus, arguing against evolution makes a person look, well, not too bright.....
I have never had a whole group of Christians jump on what I said...that might be partially because I really don't hang out with any super fundamentalists.
Personally, I would have had my say then walked out whether they liked it or not telling them that we should hold off the discussion till a time when they haven't had so much to drink and it wasn't so late.
hey laetusatheos, yeah normally I don't try to hang around people like that, but ya know, it's not exactly like the Jewish armbands of WW2, these new ones are tricky, sneeky, and coming out of the shadows. And I try to think that just cuz they're stupid doesn't mean they're entirely bad. Plus, I'm in the middle of Maine, you've got to drive everywhere up here, everywhere is 10 miles from anywhere else, and I certainly couldn't drive home if you know what I mean.
Interesting alcohol point.
Maybe we get drunk, dumb and have more fun because our bodies want more to kill germs

.
Ha ha, great comment!
Well I can't say I've ever been attacked for my views (unless you count my conservative dad) but I used to be a Christian creationist that did the attacking.
God damned hypocrite!
I'm sorry... do you mean that seriously or sarcastically?
Does godzilla make me seem that intense?

Bad joke, maybe...
You were a believer who mocked disbelievers. Now you are a disbeliever.
So yeah...disbeliever = hypocrite
= very very bad joke
Does anyone see the irony? We atheists spend so much time debating and arguing religion, but in the end, it seems most of those who come over to our side, come over under their own free will and choice, not by our arguments, come one, irony anyone?

Oh no no! Don't worry about it. I thought it was a very good joke at first and I was going to reply with a laugh and then I thought maybe you were serious. Just wanted to make sure I didn't come off wrong. I think too much sometimes...

Ha yeah that's true. From what I've seen however, a lot of atheists argue religion because the religious people insist on arguing in the first place. Though of course there are those that argue to try to make religious people reject their beliefs, but all the same, I see your point.
I'd like to think the true atheist would never sink to their level as to try to convert people. From what I've seen, we're fine with people having their own beliefs so long as they don't try to force them on us. The favor is not returned int he reverse circumstances. We jsut defend ourselves is all.
Dude, ShimShamSam, is that an old-school "Stratego" piece on your avatar? That's totally cool!
Yes sir it is, not the old version, but not the newest, and yes very cool, and yes, I'm the spy
Sweet. I remember playing that game many times. Fun stuff. I think I still have a copy in my basement.
