Batman US cinema shooting: 12 dead in Colorado (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18921492)
QuoteAt least 12 people have been killed and 38 injured in a shooting at a cinema showing the new Batman film near the US city of Denver, Colorado.
Witnesses said a man wearing a gas mask opened fire after tossing a tear gas canister at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.
A 24-year-old man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle, handgun and knife.
One other gun was recovered from the theatre, which is in Aurora.
Police have revised down the death toll from 14. They said about 50 people had been shot, including the deceased.
FBI sources named the gunman as Aurora resident James Holmes. They said no terrorism link had been established.
What week does my son visit Denver?
Yep you guessed it!
But he's fine.
Fucking eejit!
The rumor is that the way he got in is that he banged on the emergency exit and someone (presumably thinking he was just someone wanting to sneak in and watch the movie for free) opened the door and let him in. Husband (who grew up in Aurora) says that this is standard procedure. Aurora is an interesting area. My first apartment was in Aurora. The same week that I moved in, they found a dead body in the parking lot.

ABSTRACT
Shooting at the AMC Century Cinema: map, local police scanner. Bomb was may have been confirmed. It certainly sounded like it. Apparently a bomb may have blown up a part of a theater at the Dark Knight Rises premiere. Although the news isn't corroborating this right now, it definitely sounded like it on the scanner. Actually, it was probably the tear gas canisters.
Theater 9 (epicenter), Theater 8 (some hit), Theater 16 (people heard tear gas canisters)

At least 20 people were hurt following a shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., police said Friday. The incident occurred at a cinema showing the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises," a police official told NBC News. One suspect was in custody, police said. It was unclear whether other suspects were involved. The injured were being transported to three local hospitals. A bomb squad was on site at the Century 16 movie theater, police added.

2:47: From 9News: 15 mins into movie, popping heard. People thought it was part of the movie. Saw material coming through the wall. Chaotic. Caused a scramble. Several injured people escorted into ambulances. Flow of ambulances slowed down, flow of police has not. SWAT teams there. Theater 9: Guy in body armor. "One of the largest scenes I've seen in my journalistic career."
2:52: Several police cars surrounding a vehicle. Possible explosive devices inside.
2:54: Tuned in to the 9News stream.
2:58: Newscast from Gateway HS. Witness is talking. People heard explosions and gunfire. No idea what happened. One shooter had a gas mask and was throwing tear gas.
2:59: Scanners report knife pulled on someone. WAY far away from theater. May be unrelated.
3:01: Someone reporting hand pain outside the theater.
3:02: Confirmed: At least 10 killed, 39 injured. Theaters 8 and 9 were sold out, and that's where the shooting took place. 9News confirms that one person is in custody.
3:02: Nothing found inside the mall so far. Dogs coming out.
3:06: Witness interview from earlier being replayed. Witness in Theater 9 was young woman. She described a man about 6' tall kicked through the door in a riot helmet and bulletproof vest. He was completely covered in all black, with goggles. After that, she and her boyfriend dropped to the floor. They got up, ran through the emergency exit. Shooter made his way up the stairs and started shooting people with the shotgun.
3:10: News is stalling until the police chief address.
3:15: Press conference: Gas released, gunman opened fire. Only know of one gunman. Police officers respond, find the gunman outside of the theater, carrying gas mask, rifle, handgun. One additional weapon found inside. 50 were hit. 14 confirmed dead.
3:15: Comment from elcoolerick: I live in Aurora, CO, Thought I'd share. "We were 20 min into the movie when the fire alarms started going off. We thought it was a prank. Then emergency intercom came on say there was a situation and we need to evacuate immediately. Next thing we know there was a police officer was outside the emergency exit with a shotgun yelling at us to run as far away from the theater as possible. We run out. There were people covered with blood every where with what looked like bullet wounds. Kids were crying . It was a terrible scene. Talked to some people, they are saying a man came into one of the theaters threw an explosive device and started shooting." -from a guy that was there.
More info from friends. "I was in the theatre, 9 people are dead shooting started inside the theatre and went to the back of the theatre. 3 people got show few rows infront of me and cops are up there with the SWAT with automatics and everything. It was scary. The first shots that were fired everyone stayed calm because they thought it was stupid kids with bottle caps. 2nd wave was fired the niggas ran out the theatre and thats when hell broke loose. Everyone was vulnerabe even as they left through the emergency exits" -KC Cannady
second part doesn't sound intelligent, but posted for historical reasons
3:30: AR-15 was the gun potentially used. One shooter or two? Many questions and very few answers other than a new death toll after the press conference. Keep your thoughts with the victims and their families.
3:42: More testimonies. Babies and small girls shot. News anchors getting emotional. Reports that the suspect had explosives in his apartment, which is also being searched.
3:48: Another /r/denver post from WaterSnake: here
3:49: More confirmation. 14 dead. 50 injured.
3:58: damian001 finds a video of the shooters aftermath. Warning, graphic contents.
4:01: We beat 9News on the video. The video is extremely graphic, and they aren't showing it with audio.
4:04: "No reason to believe there is a second gunman"
4:06: 10 died at the theater, 4 died at the hospital. 50 others had injuries.
4:13: 911 calls and police radio being played. They're talking about the tear gas.
I've been just sick over this all morning. What a horrible, horrible thing.

Yes, let's please make a tragedy where 12 innocent people lost their lives all about you and your stupid fucking religion and your fucking persecution fantasies even though like 80% of the people in the US identify as Christian but somehow
somehow you are being persecuted by some ultra-powerful-ultra-secret minority even though an open atheist couldn't even be elected to public office, but yes,
somehow you are being persecuted and SOMEFUCKINGHOW these people dying ties into that.
Also, yes, brilliant. What would have made this situation better is to have a panicky amateur firing into a darkened smoky theater while running people dodge in and out of his line of fire. FUCKING BRILLIANT.

It takes a certain brand of cynically callous opportunism to translate such a horrific occurrence into fodder for one's own political agenda.

What an ass.
My friend was upset at me for not going to the midnight showing of this last night, then reported this to me this morning. Thank goodness, i'm not in Colarado, but man,i feel sick to my stomach and on the verge of tears--- how can someone do this to people???
I just can't even--
Are we really living in such a time where violence is so dull on t.v, that we need to go out and create it in person? I can't imagine what those poor people must of went through. the survivors are scarred for life! Ugh-- i hate guns. i hate them so much...
(I'm sorry, i'm extra emotional lately about death ;___;... and yes, stuff like this really bothers. especially in the 'great' land of the United states.) :'( :'(
I wish there was something i could say more useful, but this is a horrible tragedy and it just hurts me..

You can read the article yourselves, I'm just going to quote the big WTF moments.
QuoteA young couple who'd recently moved from New Mexico and were attending the Aurora, Colo., midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" with their children....
The children were 4 months and 4 years old, at a midnight showing of an R rated movie. Moving on. So Legaretta is the mom, and Rohrs is the dad. Before the chaos starts, Rohrs (the dad) has the 4 month old.
QuoteLegarreta said she had shrapnel in her leg from the upper thigh to the ankle. From the floor, she said, she could see her 4-month-old baby on the ground near the stairs. Legarreta said she did not know the whereabouts of Rohrs.
"At that point, I reached out and I grabbed him and pulled him in to me," she said. "I didn't even check my leg until we were out in the parking lot
So dad, like, puts the baby on the floor, in a theater where a) there is a crazy guy shooting people, and b) people are panicking and porobably pushing and shoving and trampling to get out.
Then:
QuoteHe said Legarreta called him from another phone and he drove back to the theater. They were eventually taken to the hospital and released.
If I'm reading that right, not only did he throw his 4 month old on the ground and abandon his girlfriend and two small children to fend for themselves, but then he runs out to the car, and drives away?
Dude. *shakes head* Not cool.

O-o what the crap?
My theater I go to doesn't allow anyone under the age of 6 years old into the theater after 6pm.
they call it "no 6 after 6 rule."
Greeeeeat parents. ::) ::)
I'm not even that worked up that they took the kids to the movie theater, although I don't think that was an A+ parenting move. Whtaever, I'm sure they figured the kids would sleep and of course they had no reason think it would be dangerous. I just can't believe the dude put his baby down and ran out of the theater and left his family there and drove away. Like yes, I get that I'm sure he was panicking and you never know how you'll react in a crisis and all that....but....I don't know, man. I just can't fathom it, no matter how messed up the situation. Last year we heard a bunch of stuff knocking over downstairs and thought someone had broken into our house, and I was crazy scared but I still insisted on going downstairs with Husband because I couldn't let him face the robbers by himself. Luckily it was just our stupid dog.

While I was reading your post the name of Louie Gohmert rang some alarm bells in my head. Some quick research has shown that he has made some other "interesting" statements. He is a co-signatory of the letter that asks the Inspectors-generals of the US to investigate the alleged Muslim comsperacy to to infiltrate the United States Government and he has called for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Elana Kagen for her role in Obama Care. It is apparent that Rep. Gohmart matches Michele Bachmann nuttiness for nuttiness and would give Joseph McCarthy a run in how dangerous a person can be to the Constitution.

Yes, the paper said that she was going to have surgery on her leg today, but that she was in stable condition. Holy crap. I remember going to her 6th grade graduation. Just sent him a FB message to say how sorry I was to hear that they went through that and that I hope his sister has a speedy recovery. I still can't believe it.

Isn't it strange how the Internet has turned the whole world into a village. What was for me a sigh of relief has turned out to be a tragedy for others so close to home even though you are thousands of miles away.
Yes, the world has definitely gotten smaller. That's probably the best thing the internet has done for us. I feel lucky to live in a time when I can be friends with people all over the world. :)

Haha. Aw, poor delicious piggies.
Pity the loony didn't open fire on the Westboro mob.

Then the survivors could picket themselves and I don't think the irony would even occur to them.

Sadly, in some parts of the world, some people might feel the same about you or me. I am quite happy to live in a society where people are allowed to live irrespective of the extent to which others might find their views shocking or repugnant.

Far from it. They are no or more less human than you or me, however warped and twisted we may judge them to be. The objectification of those of whom we disapprove is the source of endless human misery.

As repulsive as Westboro is, they do serve a function: not in their message, but in allowing other people to see an example of how deluded human beings can get. Usually, you have to go to mental institutions or be subjected to crime or war to see this, but Westboro displays it non-violently right in the public square. They are almost a museum of the macabre, and there's no entrance fee.

I agree. While they may garner some small measure of support from other religious whackos, they actually serve a nobler cause in the wider sense (albeit unwillingly). As you say they bring out onto the public stage with voluminous fanfare a glaring example of religious zealotry, hatred and intolerance.
To the Religious Wrong: I'm glad they're not on
my side.

I don't literally think they are pigs or less than human. Is there any expression of disapproval that I could use that wouldn't earn me a lecture, or should I just keep my disapproval to myself?

I would just ignore me, though I probably won't go away.
ER - My feelings about all of this are extremely raw. People that I know, that I've known since I was kid, got shot, and lost a loved one, right here in a theater that I have been to in the mall where I got my ears double pierced. I'm all kinds of sad and mad and probably talking about how it's an interesting commentary on the human condition that we feel all out of sorts when 12 people die in a massacre and barely blink an eye at the innumerable people starving to death in Africa is probably a rational thing to do. Talking about how we mustn't dehumanize those that we disagree with probably also has a place; perhaps if we didn't dehumanize each other, we'd be less likely to shoot each other. But I'm not in a rational kind of mood. I'm in a grieving and angry kind of mood.

We've all been there.
It's sad that you can't even go to the movie theaters without having to fear some psychopath killing you now.
I don't live in Colorado, but when I first saw this news it worried me a bit because my cousin just moved over there a month or two. He said he moved to Denver, so I wasn't too worried, but later he posted on Facebook saying that if he had gone to that midnight premiere that would have been the theater he had gone to. o.o
Certainly doesn't hit anywhere near as close to home as it has to Ali here, but still pretty scary.

Statistically, you still aren't in danger in a theater. 12 people were killed out of over 300,000,000 in the usa. The likelihood of you getting killed in a theater is still extremely low. It's the same effect that a plane crash has - people get afraid of flying, but they are more likely to be killed in an auto accident.
That doesn't stop people being scared. Worries are seldom rational.

Correct, but sometimes a dose of reason acts as a good analgesic or sedative. Sometimes.
This is a bit of an overreaction. It's sad that people let fear rule their decisions this way.

I've had luck in the past with "Ass-hat". You may use that if you wish.
And for the record: James E. Holmes is a huge one.
