I don't know if any of you ever visited any of the AOL atheist chat rooms (long ago), or atheist chat rooms on another provider, but I was thinking the other day that I miss them a little.
It would be just you and 20 or so of your closest atheist buds happily chatting about the latest movie or TV show or something else equally innocuous when suddenly...
a liquored up and half crazed fundamentalist would crash into the room clothed in sheets of self-righteous flame and screaming like a banshee that everyone in the room was "GONNA BERN IN HEEL!!1!"! Of course all guns would swivel on their turrets and the poo flinging would begin until the fundie, venomous anger spent in a magnificent orgasm of hatred and poor spelling, would fly from the room with an all-caps parting shot flung over their shoulder as they escaped into the ether...
Mostly it was annoying, but there were those rare occasions when it was really, really fun.
Never participated in that sort of thing but it does sound fun if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah, the ones that were like a very short no-holds-barred Texas cage match definitely got your adrenaline going.
Then you'd go back to the topic of the moment discussion. Just sort of livened things up a bit.
Not appropriate here of course.
Not appropriate there either really.
There also use to be atheist chat rooms on yahoo...until yahoo decided to eliminate user created rooms and didn't leave an atheist section.
The only active atheist chat rooms I know of now is on paltalk. I no longer get amused by them but I'm in a tired of debating/discussing religion phase. Though there is an abortion debate room on either paltalk or yahoo that is kinda interesting sometimes; at least until it loops back to religion.
Remember Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) anyone? I'm talking "War Games" put-your-phone-in-the-rubber-cups 300 bps modem days. Individual green letters appearing on the screen of your __________ (Apple II/e/c/gs, C64, IBM8086, CPM, etc...) as you meaner from room to room in someone's fantasy village of forums. It might run something like:
You are in the Village Square. People are milling about, talking about whatever. PHIL and ALICE are here.
> talk to phil
Enter message: | <-- imagine that blinking
Ahhh... the good ole days.
