Title: Visit from my sister
Post by: Hector Valdez on July 17, 2012, 08:10:21 PM
I have a sister who is in high school right about now. She came to visit me, and while we talked, the conversation fell onto topics of music. She is an amazing musician, and has played in the city wide orchestra up un San Antonio. While she was here, we talked a lot about music and about all the stuff that she has to do to reach that level of experise.

I got the feeling, however, that she was trying to elicit some reaction from me. She kept talking about how difficult it was to do the stuff that she did. I realized pehraps that she might have been searching for some acknowledgement from me.

I told her: "(Sis) You've grown into someone very capable. I'm proud of you."

At once, her demeanor changed. She smiled quite a bit, and the topic drifted off into other subjects. I remain in awe of the human spirit.

His Grayness would have told her to get over herself, in so many words.

It's great to get some positive encouragement from those that we love.

For some of us we are still children at heart.

Exactly my point.

Of course people fish for compliments all the time, and it's nice to give them where possible.

If my wife didn't fish for compliments at least a couple times a week I'd make her start going to therapy, because that would be a sure sign she's given up.

Compliments are always in order. Particularly when deserved.

Brilliantly put.

Thank you, ER.

Maybe this belongs in the advice thread:  if she asks 'does my bum look big in this?', it is unwise to reply, 'I can't see, it's blocking the light.'

:D

When my wife asks "does this dress make my bum look big?", my stock response is "No, it's all the chocolate you eat that makes your bum look big!". No end of mirth with that one...

That's exactly the sort of thing I say to my wife.

That's exactly the sort of thing I say to my wife.

I tend to say things like "Not so much big as Rubensque, darling" . Then duck.

"Define big."
"No bigger than usual"
"I hadn't noticed"
"I'll take the 5th on that"
"Oh, look at the time, I'm late for an appointment"

I just think this is a no win question. Women need to refrain from asking it of their partners.

What kind of music/instrument does she play?
