In the history of art, there is nothing merely human, everybody is a superhero. True heroics are performed by people, not cartoon cutouts.
What is pornography but projections of the mind, art comes from the heart.
What is art but an obscenity to the masses which makes it popular.
Humanity is exquisite.
Unless you overcook them.
Human beings can be tough at times.
That's why I stick to infants. And Kittens.
You're sick, you know that, don't you?
Don't worry, I never mix the two. That would just be weird.
Man. Always thrusting ahead and losing his head.

Hmm... Is everybody a superhero in the history of art, indeed..?
For instance, I'd call this here painting I found after literally a few seconds' search on the Internet "art" because of the story it tells. Where's the more-than-human?

If you are talking about the artists, much the same applies. Far from everyone in that business is a stuck-up sniffer of his own farts. Some people just have some emotions to convey or stories to tell.

Why is he looking upwards?
^ He is looking upwards because he is trying to find the source of leaks in the roof of his house. Or maybe he is an astronomer named Messier, birds in his attic, he is doing a commercial for razor blades or shaving cream..............he is a sad old bastard, like me, who is waiting for the next shoe to fall.

...only to find that the upstairs neighbor is a centipede. :D
The Centipede was happy quite, / Until a Toad in fun / Said, "Pray, which leg goes after which?" / And worked her mind to such a pitch, / She lay distracted in a ditch / Considering how to run.'
wait wrong thread sorry
Eh, your post was a multi-tool! ;D
A Swiss Army post?

Other people beat me to it and did a fine job.
What is the story the painting tells
you? You could go with the "earthy" looking for spiders in the corner or the more pretentious-sounding looking from darkness towards the light, symbolising this, that, hope, despair and all sorts of euphemisms for mortality - or something else entirely. That is the beauty of a well-done piece of art. It needs not tell the same story to everybody, or if it does - with different degrees of individually-informed nuance.

He is a marvel looking for a miracle.

I may have been too harsh, perhaps he's just old.

He is not shrouded in darkness. The light is very much upon him. If I am not mistaken, this is a picture of a religious person. Faith has its faults but it is not without hope. Without hope, man is nothing.
True heroics are performed by people, what is more heroic than the maintenance of hope?
Man is not without hope. He is without insight.
