I looked to see what Imgur was doing, 6.4mb down to 1.4
180 down to 96 dpi, same pixels

Regarding Imgur, I was wondering whether their recent interface changes were a signal that other less welcome changes were coming. They've managed so far to avoid going the ways that other image hosting sites have-- Either closing shop or paid subscription . . .

Pretty much the only sites I've seen that require hosting sites for images are atheist in outlook. I wonder why that is?

Well we require hosting for 2 reasons. Bandwidth/storage of images takes up a lot of both these quantities which costs money and dedicated server. The other is that if we hosted images and allowed file transfer between users we would have to vet all files and images to ensure we weren't being abused by people sharing inappropriate material eg kiddy porn. By insisting that members use 3rd party image host we don't have to worry about inappropriate content.
