The technology exists...so why not?
I think Skype would be the best method since it allows for unlimited people (as far as I know, so far haven't broken it) and has the option for video (though we won't require video). Feel free to suggest other free alternatives (remembering that we have people from all over the world).
To keep it simple...let me know what days/times you will be available using central standard time.
Can you name a major city in the time zone please as time difference calculators tend to work from city to city.
EDIT: Chicago works.
This is useful

The USA CST is 6 hours behind the UK. So if the meet happens mid to late evening in the US that will be midnight to the early hours in UK/Europe. But if it's mid day 'ish on a Saturday or Sunday it'll be early evening on this side of the pond.
Date wise I can fit in any time.
Weekends are best for me, although I do sometimes work from home too.
My work is unfortunately erratic, but flexible -- and with a kid who doesn't sleep very regularly, my time's all over the place. So I'd be happy to join you guys whenever a time is picked, if I can!

May I suggest that anybody interested, and that would include me, send their Skype address to a mod or admin. We'll keep a list in staff forum and when the date and time are fixed we will pm all the people who provide their Skype address with all the other Skype addresses.

Risk it! Risk it! I've already got the thoroughly disappointing covered, and I'm moving into the territory of abysmally boring everyone to tears and booze.
I'm unemployed ATM, so my schedule is pretty open for whenever.

Don't worry you couldn't possibly be as much of a disappointment as me. :D
But seriously I have been to many atheist meetings with people I have met on-line and some people just don't match up with your expectations. Some people can be very erudite and sparkly on-line but in real life quite dull ( and visa versa). Mainly because they are good with the written word where they have time to gather their thoughts but aren't as spontaneous in a real-time context. It's almost like you're meeting a different person.
The other big issue can be perceiving somebody as flirty on-line who really isn't in real life. They're happy to flirt in the relative safety and anonymity of cyber space, where body language is invisible, but in real life they just aren't that way inclined. This dichotomy can lead to serious repercussions where there is a serious miss-match of expectations.
I used to consider myself a good judge of character. It turns out I am, in real life, but on-line I have made some real fuck-ups, trusting untrustworthy people and being far too open emotionally to needy people. In the past I used to think I had a lot of good friends on-line when in fact it was only a handful. And some of those 'friends' have turned out to be the most despicable people I have ever come across. But we live and learn.
Never invest more emotion in an on-line relationship than you are prepared to have thrown back in your face with derisive laughter added for good measure.

Err, the only thing about Skype is that it seems to lag pretty badly if you have more than 3 people connected on one call. At least that has been my experience attempting to Skype with family during the holidays. I don't know how it would work with a big group of people, but of course there's no harm in trying.

Google+ has Hangouts - I've been on a couple with multiple video feeds that seemed to work ok.
Skype's good for me too.
Not sure on time/day, but will join if available...

If Skype crashes or lags badly, an alternate backup is Paltalk. http://www.paltalk.com/
I know that it works well, even in a chatroom of more than a couple dozen people. It works best if one person hosts the chat and lets others talk by acknowledging them when they select their little 'hand raised/want to talk' thing. Also you can type all you want in the chat window :) and Paltalk works with video too.

I never liked the idea to give a company my credit-card data for what supposed to be a free service. That is one of the reasons why I never joined Skype. Anyway, it looks like that you'd need a Skype Premium account for participating in group video calls.

Just for the record, you don't need to give Skype your credit card. :) I've used Skype for free in the past to communicate with students overseas, both video, and audio. I don't know about the group calls. I do know, though, that once you get more than 4 people in the room, it does start to lag a little bit due to the various net connections. Eh, I think it'd still be fun.

You are right. Skype no longer requests my credit card, as long as I stick to the freebies (which unfortunately excludes group calls).

I have used paltalk...the problem with it is that some of the ads contain viruses so you either have to have awesome antivirus software or use it on a computer you don't care about. I have a netbook for that purpose.
For skype, I've used it for group calls of up to 20 people (convention planning). I didn't notice any lag but I'm also on a fiber optic connection and I think many of those calling in were on similarly fast connections. I have not used it for group calls with people from overseas; but have had success with just one person from overseas. Not sure about the video though; most people don't use it. We also used it combined with people calling in via a conference line...via freeconferencecall.com (however that might be an expensive option for anyone calling in from out of area....which is why skype to skype is nice).
Google hangout would be a good alternative...I heard it was limited to 10 people; not sure if that is true.

I don't think it was ever decided where the meetup could be done.
1 Skype only allows group chats for users with premium accounts and may also be laggy.
2 Paltalk has virus issues.
3 Google only allows a maximum of 10 users in group chat.
Well, how many people would like to participate? There only seem to be a dozen or so people who've responded here. The 10 person limit on Google+ might not actually be that limiting when you account for everyone's availabilities/time schedules, etc. Those are my thoughts, anyhoo.
The Asmo is on Google+, isn't he..? ???

There are 11 people on the list but the probability of all of us all being available is very low so I suggest we all get on the Google system. Has anybody got experience of the Google system?

It's pretty easy.
The main person running the hangout needs to go to their G+ page and click on "Start A Hangout" on the right side.
Then you can add or remove people from the invite list, check your camera, mic, speakers and start the hangout.
As people join, you'll see them pop up (video if enabled).

Works for me!
Works for me too. I have a Google+ profile (although I think I've only signed in to it once) if that is the direction we end up going. Or Skype, although it sounds like we would have to pay for that. Does AOL or Yahoo still do chatrooms? It wouldn't be video, but maybe we could create a chat room there for free?

Witn no video, Skype should do the trick.

My vote would be with Skype. I've used it in the background while playing Minecraft to talk to other people on the server. We couldn't get video - which is something you presumably have to pay for - but voices worked fine.
Also, I don't know how to use anything else...
If it's 6 people or less ooVoo will do it for free with video.
Also, how do I sign up (assuming this event hasn't already happened?)

Your contact information for Skype (or your prefered comm application). Give it to Tank via a personal message.
Alas, I don't have skype, otherwise I'd participate. Have fun!
Alright, ya hooligans! We're going to do this! Via Skype! On a Sunday! At the aforementioned time! Sometime soon!
When's the best Sunday for people within the next few weeks? I'm being an assertive DJ, so if we don't reach a consensus, I'm just going to pick one. :P
Oooh, DJ, I like it when you take charge!
This Sunday works for me. Next Sunday (the 10th) does not. After that, as far as I know, I can make myself available.

Skype is free, OG! You *can* pay for extra stuff, but I have the free version and I intend to keep it that way.
Unless I can borrow my mother's computer, its a no show for me.
Post it here... and I'll attend if I'm able!
Arrghh...this Sunday does not work for me, in all likelihood. But if plans fall through, I'll be there
I'm wondering if this Sunday might be too short notice? What about the 17th?

Yeah, Tank's right. Besides, it's not like it would necessarily be the only meetup, hopefully!
I live in eastern standard time, it's currently 3:42 pm - anyhow, this coming Sunday I'll be busy most of the day, but free in the evening - however, I know that's no good for our UK folks. Eh, if I can't join you guys this Sunday, I'll join in for a second meetup :)
If I am able, I'll show up. Not very talkative lately, but we shall see...

This is probably true. Okay, we'll do this weekend and we'll do the 17th. If there's a different time for folks who want to chat on the 17th, or if there's a different program they'd prefer, they have two weeks to chime in :)
So how do we do this thing?
can someone volunteer to organize it? I can organize one later but life is a bit messed up for me right now (nothing that won't pass, just dad's death and related issues) and I am doing good to focus on just a few things.
Sorry to hear that, Whitney :(
I can organize it if people don't mind Pming me their Skype info (I won't use it for nefarious purposes, I promise :D) I haven't used a group call with Skype before, but I'm sure I can figure it out.
I'll be there tomorrow for a little bit. I'll pm you my Skype info later DJ.
Have we agreed on a certain time yet? :)
Any time after 12 central time works for me
How about 1 pm Eastern, which would be around Noonish central and... later for the over the seas folks.
Can't wait! ;D
It looks like we can get a group video call if one of us buys a "one day" premium Skype membership. It's only 4.99, so I don't mind doing it (it's less than I'd probably spend on a coffee, if we were all actually meeting in person anyway). If that's something people are interested in :)
How about we use some sort of global standard, like UTC? ??? Everyone knows where they are in relation to UTC, right? So that we do not have to convert to and from some local time standards, yes? Would be nice, no?
It'd be 5:00 PM UTC
Here's a time zone converter (http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc), if that helps anyone. :)
Thanks for doing this DJ. If we decide to do more, I can fund one of the next ones!

No worries! It'll be fun!
Another FYI. For the group video to work, each person participating needs to have Skype 5.0 or higher. So, if you haven't upgraded Skype in a while, you may want to do that. It's free, but it could be another one of those pain-in-the-butt technical hick-ups if it isn't done beforehand. :)
Okay, this is going to sound really stupid, but what do I give you when I PM my Skype info? Do I send you my username or my number?
Can now see Ali and DJ on my profile ;D
V5.8 so Ok on that front.
So DJ do we all have to buy the temp upgrade or just the 'host'?
Everyone needs version 5.0 of Skype or higher, but only one person needs to buy the premium membership for group chat to work for everyone.
Budhorse, your skype name is probably your best bet, since there should only be one user (you) with that name. :)

Cheers guys, nice to meet you all...
This was very fun. I can't wait to do it again.
Yes. His Infernal Grayness ascended from the Clay Pit in which He dwells within the Gray Realm and was spotted at the meetup with half-dead video and text-only. It was probably due to His evil plans for dominating the Interwebs - that takes a lot of bandwidth.
After the 11th, The Asmo will be on fiber and thus, His connection is expected to improve. It may even be that the Voice of Asmo will let itself be heard then.
Bahaha. I can't believe I missed the dead fox. It was a good time :) Nice to meet everyone.
Sorry I had to miss this one! Hoping to catch the next one! Sounds like you people had fun. ;D
Hope to make the next one...
I was thinking that for the next meetup, we should play a game of charades. ;D
^^Haha, that would be awesome. Asmo does a very convincing statue. :P
Was lovely seeing all of you. Siz was surprisingly slim and fit for being such a fat cat ( ;D) and the rest of you are lovely too. Since what happens on Skype stays on Skype I'm NOT going to tell everyone about Tank playing at being Brittney Spears. *touches nose knowingly* Our secret Tank. Our secret.
I'm looking forward to the next one. Looks like we can do a seven day free trial of skype premium, so I don't mind hosting the next one. Maybe we can all just take turns creating free Premium accounts every month...:D
See, I had to download the premium trial just to get the video up. Maybe if we use this often enough I'll just go ahead and buy the premium.
It's 8.99 per month. I was wondering if there was a way to get a general HAF premium account that all of us (who plan on using it) could chip in and then we would have access to it whenever we all feel like it. Probably we should try it a few more times and see if it is something that we would use often enough to warrant having a permanent HAF account.
Definitely enjoyed meeting all of you fellow nutjobs. Hopefully I'll be able to stay on longer next time.
Asmo, your aura was only enhanced by your lack of movement or voice. For all I know, you only exist in the cyberspace realm, too...um...cyber for us all to see or hear you properly. ;)
Well, there was this scientist who theorized that Cyberspace is indeed The Gray Realm... ???

Red or black? I like some red licorice, but I hate black, especially salmiakki.
Red licorice is fine. Because it's not really licorice; it's not flavored with the licorice plant. Real licorice (aka the black death) is what we're discussing here, I think.

Like most Dutchmen, I'm addicted to licorice. Whenever I get back to my home country, I buy kilo's of that stuff.

It's fathers day in the UK and I'm going out for a 'surprise' meal tonight so I may not be around. If I am I'll join in.
Who's the host this evening?
...And at what time?
I'm hosting, same time as last time. That's 11 my time. Am on my phone right now and hard to scroll back, but if you go back a page or two, you can see the utc time for the last one. 5 maybe? Anyway, 11 Denver time. Also, are any of you camelcoifer?
I am on for a little while, so I might be able to catch the beginning of the call. :)
The call is in session. Hurry up people!
Alright, nevermind. Got dragged out of the house as soon as I logged on.
Had a lovely meetup with Asmo and G85. You all should be sooooo sorry that you missed it... :P

Sorry. :) Asmo and G85.
Hope the HAF massive had a good time today. I'm sorry I missed it - I had Father's Day duties too.
Did the Asmo have a voice and a face today?
Did y'all conspire to plot the demise of Liquorice. The counter-collective will be assembled in due course...
Why no....nothing was said about licorice and how it needs to be banished to the outer darkness at all. Not a peep. ;D
Asmo had a face, sort of, but since he works in mysterious ways, he was still typing instead of speaking. And even the face was mysterious....I'm almost certain he was "chatting" from a pitch black room. You'd see a flash of glasses here, a grasping hand there. Pretty spooky, actually.
The room was lit, but because I was not alone, I darkened the camera. Apparently though, I overdid it as Skype has its own cam settings. The intention was that my face would be visible but the background would be very dark to protect the privacy of my visitor if he decided to walk by.
It kind of added to your otherworldly image. The Asmo observes silently from the shadows..... ;D
Guys! So sorry I missed it! Wee man decided that yesterday was the day he didn't need naps anymore (and that tantrums were a great substitute) and I had completely forgotten that it's father's day. The day completely got away from me. :(
DJ - Ooooh, that's rough! Wee man is little to be giving up on naps too, I'm sure he was feeling quite tired and cranky.
S'ok about missing the meetup. We'll have to try it again soon. I was actually thinking that I might just buy a 12 month premium account for HAF so we could do it whenever instead of someone having to pay $5 a pop (free trial my ass!) If it seems like we would use it more than 12 times a year, it would be a better deal.

You should have edited (and still should) the post that Guardian responded to. If someone has not shared some of their info on the public forum, there may be a reason for that.
That there is a major drawback of face to face meetings - always a risk of someone outing something they should not.
Done, although I can't edit his post where he quoted me, so if he's worried about my using his first name, he will have to edit that himself.
That, or the mods can do it
Thanks Tank!
This made me LOL. I totally made my bed before our last meetup, which I almost never do.

One can also resort to Asmotactics if one does not want one's place seen by others, for whatever reason.

Make a date and make it happen!
I don't know about you folks, but July is going to be a crazy month for me. August should be a little more settled, so I was thinking, if no one else sets anything up, of arranging another time in August.
If there are day of the week/time preferences, speak up! Otherwise, I'll be putting my bossy-pants back on and picking a time that I like best. ;D

Sounds good to me. The weekend would probably be best for everyone.
August is fine with me if everyone is busy until then.
Just tell me and I'll be around July or August
I will not attend from the end of July and until medio-August.
Any idea if there's going to be another one soon?
Mid-end of August maybe?
I'll probably be able to attend from 12th.

I'm in too. Tank's mankini would be too good to miss.
I can probably do it too. Though I insist the mankini would violate something, or cause my computer to blow up in horror ;D

Underwear is over-rated.
There has been ample discussion here of ladies' underwear; I think it's time it should be dropped.

All true. It's not called the web for nothing.

Both personal and third-hand. One person I encountered ,who seemed perfectly affable and unthreatening at first sight, turned out to be quite cuckoo. At least here nobody bothers to conceal their otherness, self of course (with judicious self- deprecation) included.

Sorry I missed it... Busy with the holidays and work and stuff.
(plus, no camera on the new computer yet ;-)
I propose a virtual meetup tomorrow at 19:00CET.
I expect to be there!
I'll come if I happen to be tweaking HAF at that time.
Invite me. If I'm available I'll join in but it'll be voice rather than video as my video calling doesn't seem to be working.
Will do.
I'll be on but start without me I'm just getting dinner out the oven.
I'm up and hosting. Eagerly awaiting participants
.
Are you still there?
Dammit I didn't even get the notification until just now. ;-;
When is the next one planned for?
Don't think anything has been planned. Suggestions are welcome.
Yes I did thanks, it was an invite to join in from Google Hangouts,....was slightly occupied at the time so I couldn't join.

Baring major cock-ups I should be around.
On with SD right now.

I'm on :D
Buddy where are you? :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader:
Anyone feeling like doing one?
Yes, but I'm off out to see the new Bond movie so I won't be around.
Really sorry I couldn't make it guys!! Mimi was here and didn't have too much time, so I wanted to spend the last few hours with her. Once she moves in, we'll be attending more often.

Just shows you have your priorities in order. ;)
Was out seeing "The Martian"... Pretty good adaptation of the book.
They got most of the plot points in, with just a hint of Hollywood ending added.

Dag where are you?
I propose a meetup this coming Sunday.
I'm free.
50/50 for me.
I am starting a meetup now.
Won't be about this evening. Catch you next time.
You missed a good one. G85, SD and her girlfriend with special guest appearances by my mom.
...and quite a few furballs.
So.... Sunday, anyone?
I'll try. Depends on what day Petsmart calls me in for an interview.

I'm at the bloody mall...currently in a women's clothing store called the "Loft".
If you don't hear from me after a couple hours send help.
Please.

I just got home...I hate malls. I got two sweaters some Aveda face moisturizer and Sushi out of it at least and scored some brownie points.
Not a big fan of Lowe's either.
I'm exhausted.
Will attempt meetup on Sunday. Please plan accordingly.
I will be out shopping with the mother all day Sunday. Try to have fun without me!

I'll be on at about 6:30.
I am here. Awaiting your call.
Up and running.
Bruno!!!! Bruno!!!! Bruno!!!!
What happened Joe?
Zach made it too!
Finally after all this time I got to meet a few of my fellow members online. I'd like to say again how very nice it was to meet Buddy, Guardian and Tank, and get a chance to chat with you lovely folks for a bit; although I did have trouble understanding Buddy and her thick mid-western Indiana accent.
For those who couldn't join in and wonder what we talked about we had several nice conversations about dick-eating, Mackinaw Island, turning-21 stories (Drinking age) and emergency uses for condoms. (Buddy has an emergency pack in her mini with protein bars, blankets, bottled water, a shovel to bury her victims and prophylactics)
Plus Dag/Guardian did some shots of a popular Norwegian brandy called, "Cheep Ass Brandy".
All in all a good time....

Well Tank, if you hadn't left teh call so soon after I had joined in maybe you could have explained some of the rules to me...as it is I bet everyone here didn't know that Buddy has like half a dozen kats running around her house, and also that her living room is entirely furnished with kat trees and stuff.
I think we need to discuss a possible intervention on her behalf...I started sneezing just seeing the kats on teh call.

Probably, yeah.
Well. Shit. I have to stay late for work. Maybe next week? I'm at a rally on Sunday but if you heathens are free on Saturday I'm down to Skype.
Well, that's disappointing. :-\
Next week I'll be at the Sweden Rock Festival. Doubt I'll have wi-fi on the tent.
Went out in the end. I should be around Saturday.
Anyone up for tomorrow?
I'll be in Indianapolis for a fundraiser tomorrow
Maybe if you guys have a meetup I'll join in for a little bit on my phone.
I've decided that I don't feel like driving down to Indianapolis tomorrow so I'll be around. :)
What time do you guys usually do? I haven't been able to do one in years, but for once I might be around.

Well. I'm online. Waiting for others.
I'm on-ish. Waiting for the laptop to stop throwing a temper tantrum
Anyone around today?
Yup!
Was going to ask, "How's it hanging?" Then I noticed it might not be apprpriate!
Just having inter-shop tea, sliced beetroot, tomato, shallot and grated carrot sandwhich with low fat salad dressing. Would be really healthy if it was not on white bread.
