Post by: Claireliontamer on October 31, 2015, 05:17:45 PM
I can't find the original thread, if it appears then please merge.......

Anyway, about a million years after everyone else as usual I am finally watching 'Game of Thrones'.  I found the box set of seasons 1-4 very cheap so it should keep me quiet for a while.......

LOL. :P

Actually that got me thinking...I would like to watch GoT again, starting from the beginning.  :chin:

Enjoy, Claireliontamer! If you're into fantasy/historical stuff then you'll surely love it. Most probably you'll enjoy it even if you're not into that stuff. :smilenod:

Claire, I haven’t seen 'Game of Thrones' either. I haven’t even seen that movie where a girl keeps singing…”Let it go...let it go…!”  ::)

I haven't watched that either, much to the staggering disbelief of my 6 year old niece.

I just watched on Youtube: Disney's Frozen "Let It Go" Sequence Performed by Idina Menzel. I finally heard the whole song. Sticky song, isn’t it? :sadnod:  Maybe one day I’ll watch the movie.
I liked the part of the music video where she lets down her hair.  :tellmemore:

::) Oh, why did I have to get all curious to see her let down her hair and watch the clip? Now I've got the song stuck in my head!

Let it go...let it go...

It is a sticky tune, for sure. Too sticky, in fact. :(

Can't hold it back anymore...

I'm thinking how useful those kind of superpowers would be during hot summer days. I would be able to chill a bottle of soda fairly quickly if only I could instantly make a snowman out of thin air...  :chin:

Let it go...let it go..
Turn away and slam the door

Yes. Yes they do. Having never been actually discriminated against, but filled with stories about how the devil wants to ruin all the things, leaves them looking very hard for where the devil is attacking them. Because they are not allowed to doubt their religion and there is no Devil to attack them (but he must be attacking them the church says it's everywhere), to resolve that problem, they perceive things that are not attacks, as attacks.

I've been watching an American series called Fargo, 8/10 so far, two more to go. Comically dark, very dark and not the sort of thing I would generally watch; it's about a gang war, but it is riveting. There is an actress called Kirsten Dunst, very young, but very good. Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson are also in it. I would recommend it.

Wife and I have been watching Gotham lately. I'm always been a Batman fan, and the acting is pretty good for the most part, especially the guys who play the Penguin and Alfred. But it's starting to overboard; latest story arc was too predictable and obvious, and Jim Gordon's character has become much darker than the comics usually went. Starting to feel gimmicky.

Just finished season 1 of The Detectorists and thoroughly enjoyed it, so well shot and directed there were parts almost Wes Anderson in style especially the open day part. Glad I checked it out.

I have to agree with The Bridge it isn't anywhere near as good as the first two seasons and the lack of Martin Rohde isn't really filled by the new person.

Around this particular household all eyes have been on the Womens Handball World Cup. My parents like sports on TV.
Thankfully it ended today with the final, where I take a very small measure of pride that Norway crushed the Netherlands.

I recently started watching The Expanse on Amazon Prime. I like science fiction, and I always appreciate realistic science. It's not totally accurate, but the creators of the show are making an effort to nod to the science. It seems to have the beginnings of an involved plot: it's clearly based on a book. I have high hopes for it, though there are only 4 episodes so far.

I'm also planning to start the books over Christmas break.

Tonight, I'm watching the Kenneth Branagh version of Wallander.

It's a depressing vision of Sweden, but another part of me wonders what my life would be like if I had grown up in a secular country, like Sweden.

Some one gave me a ROKU thingy for Christmas. Now I have been watching a trashy series titled; "Orange is the new black".  Wow, that is one nasty set of scenes. So why in hell am I watching such stuff?  It is all because of an NPR interview program where the author
, the  real "Piper", was incarcerated for having made  a mistake in judgment mixed with her lesbian attraction to another woman with criminal intent.  The real Piper was a graduate of the exclusive Smith College and something of a debutante.  She landed in the slammer to cohabit with the dregs of society, some of whom were most intelligent.

I hadn't but I have now. I don't know what to make of it all. After watching the final episode my thoughts on the series was that the lawyers made some massive errors in the defence. This is where I think they fucked up going by what was presented in the show.

1) They never properly focused on the first charge of murder. They spent too long focusing on a conspiracy when there wasn't enough/any evidence for it, there was only suspicion. This is why they lost, they failed to highlight that because the bones, car and bullet were on his land doesn't indicate that he committed the murder. Its just as likely could have been another member of the family as it could have been him.

2) They didn't create a credible alternative story, they managed to poke holes in the time line but not provide an alternative narrative. The one they alluded to placed the police as the perpetrators. Rather than it just being a bias that made him the sole suspect and was an unfair investigation that ignored any potential other evidence.

3) They didn't ask for basic experiment methods to ensure a lack of bias or determine the accuracy of the blood tests.

Ultimately neither case was strong enough for a verdict to be given and whilst there is only the option of guilty or not-guilty available a fair trail isn't possible as it as clear as day to me this was an inconclusive case from both arguments. The Police were bias, the evidence was suspicious with only location really giving it any weight and the trail had been spoilt before it even got to a court. The defence were overly emotional, played along with Stevens conspiracy theory, failed to proved alternative narratives, failed to present a string of other potential suspects it could have pointed towards, failed to ensure their evidence got the best chances possible (even if it was late that would be a cause for review), failed to highlight why Stevens DNA could have been in the car and under the bonnet without the need for murder to have happened without resorting to far fetched ideas as the core of the case.

"Trumbo", about the experiences of writer Dalton Trumbo on the blacklist during America's shameful Red Scare era.  Bryan Cranston does a good job as Trumbo, Helen Mirren is a deliciously evil Hedda Hopper and John Goodman plays Frank King, a producer of crap 50s and 60s movies (Ed Wood was one of his directors), who hired a number of blacklisted writers -- not out of nobility, they were just really cheap.

Goodman has a wonderful scene that I could watch over and over.  It gets even better after this clip:

Goodman is a fantastic actor, hugely under rated (though he has worked on a lot of shit). Give me him any day over the mediocre good looking hollywood actors that get all the large rolls (yeah I know a lot of them produce the films themselves). He is brilliant in Treme.

Best thing ever (relating to TV). I hate watching programs at set times and having to wait for the next especially if it is slow paced like House of Cards. If networks want the ad revenue then just do what 4OD does but give us the freedom of modernity and keep the standard broadcasting for those that are still in the dark ages.

I'm finally watching Firefly for the first time ever.

To further destroy my nerd cred, I'm going to commit the ultimate heresy and say I totally get why this show was cancelled. Not that I'm not enjoying it. But the concept of post-civil war Wild West outlaws in space with hot chicks isn't enough to sustain a show on it's own. There is no actual plot.

I've been binge watching bad American Idol and X Factor auditions. I don't know why I like that stuff so much, it's such a major waste of time and doesn't add anything to my life. Still can't get enough though.  ::)

In Germany we called it Schadenfreude, which is pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune  ;).

That's such a cool word, I've incorporated it into my vocabulary.

Human nature is a funny thing, how else would programs/films such as 'Jackass' be so popular? :watching:

I've just finished the first 2 episodes.

It helped quite a bit that Walmart put it on the shelves at least 4 days prior to it actually being released. So I've been watching since last Friday. Which, seriously, I get that Walmart doesn't always hire the creme of the crop and there is some serious worker apathy there, but the release dates are stickered on the front of every individual package.

I was in the store texting BF like "hey... The X box one plays Blu Ray, right? Because that's the only one left and I don't want to bring anyone's attention to this by asking for DVD..."

Well I watched the last 2 episodes of series 4. Then watched the qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. Then watched 1 &2 of series 5. I may watch the rest tomorrow but may not as I feel crap at the moment with a sinking cold which I hope won't turn out to be flu.

How many episodes in are you? There's an overarching storyline with River (Summer Glau's character) that is quite good, IMO. I will say that we watched the pilot, weren't impressed, and didn't try again for a couple of years, but on the second attempt we got hooked.

I had a hard time getting into it at first too, because I generally dislike mixed genres, but then I caught the episode "Shindig" and was hooked.

4, I think. There seems to be some long term stuff that could happen, except they haven't really done anything with it. It's just mentioned every so often. So far they've just kicked around taking odd jobs and talking about the Alliance sucks.

I recently got rid of Sky because of that. Waste of damn money, I'm never available to watch the programs I want when they are on and I never sit down and think oh I must make sure I record all the shows I want to watch and I was paying £25 a month just for that privilege of basic tv and the ability to record, then there are all the packs on top. Changed it up to NowTV which is a internet version of the service and the grand total for pretty much the same package minus live TV came to £14 down from £65.

Actually I DVR everything. I have a "Movies I Want list (215 movies)", "Movies I Used to Have" (back when VHS was the rage, about 23 movies) and a "Movies to replace" list (movies i have needing replaced. About 5 at the moment) on two separate DVR's (bedroom and living room). So, I always have something to watch. Plus, I have 3200+ movies on DVD, and 60+ TV shows on DVD (minus individual seasons) so...even if I can't find anything...always something to watch.

OCD only in not getting rid of any of the ones I don't care for. Of course most of them are in collections so...not much getting rid of them anyway.

I have them all (minus TV shows) in my bedroom. 11 shelves. All five levels except one that has seven levels. I restock (movies I buy from in between restocking) the shelves once or twice a year.

I don't understand what you mean by "formats becoming obsolete". I do have a Blu-ray player, if that's what you mean.

The 100.

I watched a few episodes a while back when it first came on and didn't make much of it (felt like a typical teen series but with a science fiction twist) so gave it a pass. I recently kept seeing a lot of really high reviews for later episodes, unusually high so decided to give the first season a chance. Whilst the first season does stick to what I thought it would be and has a bit of a Stargate feel to it it gets pretty good then gets a lot better in the second, if it keeps on improving at the rate then it should be pretty damn fantastic.

Last week my wife (Socorro) was in Honduras, so my son and I watched the entire first Season of True Deceives, with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan.

We both really enjoyed this quite a bit (Second time my son watched it, but he was so impressed he begged me to watch it with him, so we figured the week we were both playing bachelors would work, it was fun spending time with him watching this and then replaying our favorite scenes over and discussing it). We watched 2 episodes on Monday, and then one each day after).

It is very well written, with some excellent dialogue. The writer is Nic Pizzolatto, and watching this has piqued my interest enough that I'm going to head to the bookstore this weekend and see about picking up some more of his work.

The cinematography is also excellent, with some visually stunning shots and sequences, and with musical direction by T Bone Burnett himself, the mood is consistent throughout the film.

Matthew McConaughey does an excellent job portraying the character of Detective Rust Cohle. Some of his lines from the film were fantastic, like this one with regards to his character describing himself both as a realist and pessimist.

I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself - we are creatures that should not exist by natural law... We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

I also relate to this exchange between McConaughey's character and Woody Harrelson's (Martin).

Rust Cohle: This place is like somebody's memory of a town, and the memory is fading. It's like there was never anything here but jungle.
Martin Hart: Stop saying shit like that. It's unprofessional.

Here is the Intro song for each episode (8 episodes in all)

The Handsome Family - Far From Any Road

I'd vote for this thread having sticky status, there's only three threads with sticky status in the media section.
Sticky status, sticky status, sorry I like saying that.  Does anywhere still have fly paper, I visited my my mother's mother's home once, they had it, it'd caught a lot of flies.

Boardwalk Empire, I watched a series some years ago and I've had, XXXXX I thought I had them all on a hard drive for years but wiki says there's a fifth.  I'm about to start the 4th. Most people interested in watching it would probably have watched it but anyway.

It's got the obligatory tits but you can ff through the soft and use the minutes saved to watch proper porn later, if you too are a debased life form.  The males are all horrible but it's not their fault, they all had difficult childhoods.  The woman are all victims of the men.  I like half face and his girl though, I hope it works out for them.

What's it about?
There's little tiny parasites, they engorge themselves and ponce about and the host sickens.

I've been watching Shameless, apparently the US version... We didn't know there were two and just picked the first one Netflix showed us.

Parts are entertaining. Parts I could do without. I am enjoying that it's pretty equal opportunity with the nudity, as opposed to say Game of Thrones where there are attractive naked women everywhere and so far we've seen two penises: the random actor who couldn't figure out if he had STDs, and Hodor.

I mean... NSFW

It depends on the show. With HBO and such getting into the tv series game and not having to worry so much about ratings and what's "allowed", as they're not public channels, things are changing. There's quite a bit of full frontal female nudity with little to no male nudity in the same show, especially in a sexual context. Usually a penis is shown in a joking context.

They may all be the same to you, and maybe they are... I like looking at them regardless and find that one particularly nice.

That's not what I meant, a male's genitals protrude and a females doesn't, or not nearly as much and a camera can do full frontal and not catch much.  I'm perfectly understanding if you're a penile connoisseur.

Anyway all this ubiquitous porn is a curse on the modern mind.
A healthy body runs or swims or walks to stay healthy.
A healthy mind thinks, recalls and imagines, now it doesn't have to,
No not any more, doesn't have to recall the one on the train,
the one at work, in church or school, at the shop, next door.
Type a few keys and it served up to your preference like fricken pizza.
There's no mental exertion in modern masturbation, that's why the worlds so fkd.

So cool, the way Paul Henreid always lit both cigarettes in his mouth and then passed one to her. On the day Bette Davis died I was watching reports of it on screens as I queued up the spiral staircase of Blackpool Tower with my children and Ma-in-law to get up to the lift that then took us up to the top.

Naked dating. A surprisingly good way to demystify nudity and sexuality. Last night it was a bi-sexual woman choosing so there were 3 men and 3 women for her to choose from. It was interesting who the rejected people reacted. She ended up with a woman and they got on like a house on fire. I think the key element of this program is the attitude of the contestants is self selecting in that they are literally open about their sexuality. The chooser has to get naked as well.

I sometimes feel nostalgic, not about hanging Nazis necessarily but I get it that they may have been those were the days days.  I didn't think you quite that old though.

Not quite, that's why it's nostalgia.

I've been watching two animes recently. Both have similar main characters, in that they have a past where the murdered many people and now live a peaceful life. They are both pretty old but I watch them on a tv channel like streaming service.

The one I know best, Ruroni Kenshin, just "started" a new arc where the main character has to confront that his past is catching up with him. An old rival is out for his life, and he is as good as ever, while the main character has taken up a life of peace and hasn't fought rugged in a long time. He wonders if he is capable for the task.

Travel Man.
Like many things travel can be such a bother, I think it's better to watch someone else do it.
I dislike most travel surrogates but I'd recommend Ayoade for a vicarious travel experience.

I recorded it, and hopefully will have time to watch it this weekend, butt other reviews I'm seeing online aren't very favorable either. At least he's "Hot", I mean that's the direction the church should go next time they are choosing a Pope. Pick one that is sexy, and hip.

Same rational as when Bishop George Carlin unveiled the "Buddy Jesus" in the movie Dogma.

I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean (2017) on my Dad's tv/computer. Was much better than the previous one with Penelope Cruz. Orlando Bloom had a small but important part to drive the plot as well as the other characters.

There were some plot holes concerning why they needed Jack Sparrow and some missed edits with Captain Barbossa. If you watch the movie to the end you would understand what I mean.

Overall though I would like to see a new one 👍

Started watching season 2 of Preacher and have totally surprised myself by liking it, even with all the violence.  It's very funny, and with me that goes a long way.  I'll have to subscribe to Hulu to watch season 1.

Just watched the first 3-4 episodes of "American Gods." I have to say that I don't see thing going far in terms of seasons but I like it none the less. They characters give subtle clues about who they are in regular conversation and I appreciate that. Except for the leprechaun, he says flat out who he is. There are some interesting scenes with characters that would normally be considered actual "American" Gods like the buffalo, or the wolf, ect.

The main character is African American, and every episode thus far begins with and actual African God doing something, somewhere, in America's history. So far these scenes have nothing to do with the plot. There was also one scene where muhammad [?] has gay sex with a middle eastern man he drove in his taxi. I don't know why this happened. It just happened in the middle of the episode and I didn't understand why.

I am curious as to what the Native American spirits have to do with the plot as they just seem to appear for a moment and not really do much. It is implied there is a war coming between the old gods, and the new gods (also because the description for the tv show says that) and I am wondering where the indigenous american spirits fit into all this. Will they just sit back and watch them tear each other apart and take the people caught in the middle? It's all very interesting as the role they play isn't explicitly stated.

I'd recommend the show to anyone if they don't mind subtle nuance in character descriptions.

I'm bringing Netflix series to potentially switch to Hulu for a bit.

Just finished Stranger Things 2, which was very good but not nearly as good as season 1. I felt like they tried to cram too much in and rushed around. At the same time there was a lot of weird problematic stuff, and I felt more like they were going for "remember when we weren't all so PC" instead of "remember all this music and film projectors and D&D on graph paper"?

Binge watching The Big Bang Theory.

Best line so far. Penny is in the laundry with the hot blond who has moved in upstairs and describes 'Shields' from Star Trek and double takes on her new found gookdom!

I have far too much in common with Sheldon. No, really, I do!

Books, Fonda is an old broad who has exceeded her "use by" date.  I still like her and both me and wife Elaine enjoy the humorous series with Frankie (Lilly Tomlin) the  delightful weirdo. ....Oh Alright I did not like Jane much when she was Hanoi Jane. Never mind that she was closer to being right than our glorious leaders.

I still shudder at the movie about that Vietnam madness, Deer Hunter and its eventual outcome.  It has the most poignant theme music.  The musical composition is called Cavatina.  It grabs me with force and emotion............https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSECkRnpsDE

The Punisher on Netflix. I am a huge fan of Marvel (and DC, and Star Trek, and the Expanse, and...) I have been enjoying the sheer, visceral, "No fuck you" of the main character's response to...everything. There is also an element of concern with veterans (of which I am one) in the narrative, which makes it especially poignant for me.

So yeah, if you have the next 43 years free, watch all of the Marvel shows on Netflix (I am still working my way through them), then AGENTS of Shield, than the 13 Marvel movies. And Legion. And the X-Men.

This is a work in progress.

Better watch them before they get taken down. Disney is starting their own streaming service and they won't be renewing their contract with Netflix when it comes up.

I finally finished watching The Grand Tour on Amazon. I actually enjoyed it more than Top Gear. They were able to get away with a lot more than when they were on BBC. The show itself was hilarious and I love the chemistry between Clarkson, Hammond, and May.

Also, my boyfriend will never know, but Hammond is totally my celebrity crush.

Some Aus things that probably wouldn't mean anything to anyone but Bluenose.

Detectorists
It's one those cute British shows.
On balance it's OK. The genre usually has a couple of normal people living in a village of idiots.
There might be as many as five normals living in a village of idiots, it's fighting the stereotype.

I'm not turning detectorist but an inspiration to get off your butt and get out in the world is good.

Last night we watched a Netflix movie called Mr. Church.  Not exactly a chick flick but nearly.  Eddie Murphy was the chef who had befriended and become an important human element  for a single single mom, but never in a romantic way. He was a serious actor, not the comedian that is his usual gig. I rather liked the whole story line.  Murphy was very good in that role.  The name, Mr Church,  was in no way attached to religion of any sort.

Anyone else viewed that flick ?

I just finished watching the Office. And started watching Game of Thrones again with my GF because she hadn't seen it and people keep telling her she needs to. I quit watching at the end of season 4 because it got so ridiculous I laughed out at several parts and could not keep going. This time I was reminded why I stopped watching it, but now we stopped where I last left off, and I think we will finish watching the series.

Ip Man: The Final Fight. Not so bad as I expected. The acting is quite good. It has some memorable scenes, but somehow the movie can't decide whether it wants to be a biography (of Ip Man) or plain action flick.

Beautiful wise, clever, brave, strong, loving, Lagertha.

I suffer and yet take comfort knowing the Valkyries will take her, greatest of shield maidens to Valhalla.  To be with Ragnar and her daughter and grandson.

I hadn't heard anything about it before I sat down. By the thirty minute mark I realized that there had been zero cut scenes. That was an interesting effect when you aren't expecting it.

Something with Jason Stratham in it that I ripped from a DVD I borrowed from the library I think.
Got wrong sound track, I'm getting the dialogue and descriptions from a pleasant female voice.

Nick sits motionless and then drops his hands
flash back to the six of diamonds landing and his chips sliding away
Nick smashes his glass on a thugs head
He beats them up slamming ones head on the bar
Nick stalks away a thug leaps out behind him, Nick hits him with a bottle
Then shoves a woman out of the way and fights a thug
Nick beats up two thugs with a tray
He flings the tray into a thug's throat and fights others
A thug hits Nick with a bottle, Nick jabs an ashtray into his throat
A thug swings a baton at Nick who dodges and then hits him with a bottle
Nick hits and trips him, Nick hits a thug and then presses his face against a clear panel
Nick kicks a thugs face, he takes out two thugs and slams a third's head on a table
Nick shoves chips in the thugs mouth,  a thug hits Nick, Nick knees his face and chokes him and slams his head into a poker machine.
Nick twist a thugs arm.  Cops approach guns drawn.

I'd never realised such poetic imagery was possible.

Not much to laugh about these days.  We need a bit of relief from the constant barrage of news about the virus.

Try a Netflix serial named: The Kaminsky Method.  In the series, Michael Douglas is running an acting school.  His urologist is Danny DeVito and his acquaintances are all well known Hollywood celebrities who do cameo appearances.  There are so many subtle lines by the actors that I cannot contain myself from laughing boisterously.  This is a fun series. Try it, you may like the relief.

Runaways - It's only on Hulu and it's based on a Marvel comic of the same name. It's a series and I think there are three seasons. It's about a group of teenagers, about seventeen years of age, who stumble onto a ritual their parents are performing including a human sacrifice. It's quite interesting.

I'm about to call it a night. I just got finished watching three episodes of The Tick on Amazon Prime Video. The pilot I watched yesterday and wasn't sure I'd watch anymore. But I was told it was right up my alley so I watched some more. It's getting better.

Tomorrow I may binge watch a few episodes.

That's good. I was watching something about the pyramids on the History Channel some fifteen plus years ago. I worked from home so when I was done, I'd turn on the TV. My wife worked in an office.

It was a two hour documentary and I was engrossed in it. My wife comes home and asks, "What is this &$*@?" and immediately changes the TV to America's Got Talent or something like that. I put my coat on and went downstairs to work on my Mindstorms robot. We were heading for a divorce anyway when she started introducing my kids to her new boyfriend.

Most people in my generation are unhealthily-fascinated with Japan (Which, speaking of Prime Video, James May - Our Man in Japan is a cool, light-hearted series. I recommend) me, I'm far more interested in ancient Egypt, Sumeria and Rome than I am in ninjas and samurai.

everybody has a different life, but im always bemused by "what people are watching." i haven't had a television set in my life in over thirty years, and i cant watch them anymore. i can sit in front of one for a half hour or so and then i have to get up and leave to go do something else. not necessarily anything worthwhile, just something else.

on rare occasions i can sit still long enough to watch a movie or an episode of something my family is watching. maybe two or three times a year.

i don't have any problems with video screens, as i have one in front of me now. but sitting still to observe a story being played is beyond my patience. stage productions are the same way.

but a concert i wouldn't have a problem with, although there aren't any orchestras within  seventy miles.

i wonder how i got rewired. wasn't always that way.

i was a child in the philippines when animated cartoons for kids were still silent-- just a musical track. steamboat willie stuff.

my own kids grew up without a television set and found programming stressful when they watched them in motels while we travelled.

i remember once they were watching a three stooges comedy that had curly, larry, and moe being left behind on a train platform when the train left, because they were late.

my kids were so stressed they burst into tears.

I've been watching The Boys, a series on Amazon Prime Video (I should just shorten that to just Amazon or APV but whatever). There are three seasons produced but only one on APV. The violence is pretty graphic and some people might get turned off by it.

It involves a world where superheroes are real -- and corrupt. The Boys are a misfit ensemble of vigilantes who want to take the super types down, killing them if possible. I don't know how they are going to kill two of them as they are invulnerable but I guess we'll find out in another season or so.

I'm half way through it already and hope they release season two soon.

As long as they are not intentionally made to be bad. I like movies where people were trying their best to create their vision, even if it fell short. But when the intention is to make a bad movie, even for laughs, I don't like it that much. The Sharknado movies are a good example of the bad kind of bad movies.

The 8th season of GoT, while not great, wasn't as bad as people whine about.  If you liked GoT up through the seventh season, the eighth is like that, but a little worse and a lot more rushed. And all the character development that you thought the characters were making ended up being temporary and no character actually had any development at all and they are the same as they were in the first season.

Has anyone here seen Brave New World, based on Aldous Huxley's book? I am going to watch it and can only hope it can capture the atmosphere of the book. Huxley's other similar, but much more human, book was Island, which could be turned into a movie as well. I imagined it set in a landscape painted by Gauguin when I read Island.

I just finished watching Mythica: A Quest For Heroes. It's a movie that is entertaining however not the best. I don't want to spoil the movie for those who haven't watched it but I will quote IMDB.

Stuck in a life of indentured servitude, Marek dreams of becoming a wizard. When she meets a beautiful priestess, Teela, in need of help, Marek escapes her master and puts together a team of adventurers and embarks on an epic quest to free Teela's sister from a vicious ogre.
It didn't have my heart racing or my adrenaline running like some action movies but it kept me awake. There are three more movies - sequels that follow. I haven't watched them yet.

I'd give it six out of ten stars because it's a fun little movie.

After looking it up, I see that there are two made-for-television films of the book. One from 1980 with Keir Dullea (played the main astronaut character in 2001: A Space Odyssey), the other from 1998 with Leonard Nimoy. I've not seen either of them. Interesting that there's never been a "major motion picture" made based on the book.

Currently watching The Fury, largely because Kirk Douglas is in it but it's not one of his better efforts.  He's trying too hard to be sexy (someone should have told him he really didn't need to try) and the plot, about physic teens in danger, is silly but not the right kind of silly.

Still watching Hustle. I'm in the middle of the third season now. I don't know that I will watch it past season four though. Two of the main characters get replaced it looks like. I may watch an episode or two though and test the waters.

I am watching The Limey for the first time and enjoying it. Terence Stamp gives a brilliant performance in his usual cool way.

About three days ago I started binge watching Hand of God on Prime Video. It's captivating. It's all I've watched for these past few days.

It's about a judge who thinks he hears "God" and sees visions. Then he exerts vigilante justice because of the voices in his head. It gets more complex as the series goes. There are only two seasons unfortunately.

I'm watching "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix and I'm hooked. Read the Walter Tevis book years ago and love the way they brought it to life on the TV screen.

I got halfway through the first episode and couldn't get through the rest.  :-X

Looks like a 'Marmite' show.

And don't be tempted by AWAY. I fast forwarded the second half of the season to see what happened out of morbid curiosity rather than interest.

I finished watching "The Queen's Game" yesterday. Great story telling and the actors were superb. A must see for anyone who (like me) likes the game and world of chess. What I loved most was that the main protagonist wasn't a Mary Sue character. She had her flaws and went through difficult times, unlike many of the female characters we see nowadays in woke Hollywood movies.

Maybe this belongs elsewhere...art section?  Astounding sculpture from artists, some of  whom have a strange perception of reality.

Borsch - I've been binge watching this for days. There are six seasons to it. It hooks one at the end of every episode to catch the next one. It's on Amazon Prime.

Mr. In Between. Main character is a hitman and possibly a psychopath. But a pretty likeable psychopath. He seems to have a conscience, though, so maybe not a psychopath. I think the term is overused; most people are capable of doing horrible things, but we can't all be psychopaths.

The episodes are like 25 minutes long, which is great. No huge commitment.

Also just bingewatched "The Undoing" (Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant) over a couple nights. Got a little silly at the end, but it was still good. Like one of those old Law & Order episodes with a murder that shakes Manhattan high society. Fun to get a glimpse into how the 5 percent lives. Nicole Kidman must have sold her soul to still have skin that luminous.

Tried to watch a horror movie with Henry Rollins in it (He Never Died or something like that). It was horrible, and I stopped 30 minutes in. Probably should not have even tried. I hate Henry Rollins; he's such a doofus. But it had gotten decent reviews.

Ye, I thought that was OK.
Does a considerable proportion of English people still disapprove of Hugh Grant?
I think some thought him too foppish, back, back in the day, hmm ye, understandable, maybe.  Still, I love About a Boy, Four Weddings and Notting Hill were fun, I'd like some more of those.
He was an excellent bastard in the Bridgets.
Ye, he was, and Colin Firth is at least as foppish and no one takes him to task.
And Stephen Fry gets to fop wherever he wants, 'cause he's an institution.
A much loved institution.
Yes of course, we all bow to the Stephen

I didn't enjoy The Green Knight movie.
Reviewers swoon, some common folk are less complimentary.

Me too. Four Weddings was especially fun. Rewatching that movie is like curling up in a warm, fuzzy blanket. But (and?) I say this despite having an inexplicable dislike of Hugh Grant.

He was an excellent bastard in the Bridgets.

He really was. I enjoyed his performance for once.

Ye, he was, and Colin Firth is at least as foppish and no one takes him to task.

Yeah, but Colin Firth is just more likeable for some reason; he's sexier in any event. He made an excellent Darcy in the BBC P&Prejudice. Hugh Grant always plays characters that come across as kind of neutered. For some reason they're a little more bearable in his later movies, though. I think HG's wrinkles are giving him some pseudo-depth.

26:59 into the second episode of Better Call Saul.
It was hard to like any of the Breaking Bad characters, I sort of liked Saul.
