Really? Not with your whole skin? :notsure:

Did I deserve that response though? :P Maybe I did, heh.

Here's something to get you in the Christmas mood!  :guitar:

I think it's a little funny that No one doesn't like Christmas, it just isn't true that nobody doesn't like the holiday.  ;D

Sorry, it's late and my thinking process can be a little weird at times.

I'm feeling a little panicky and rushed, as I always do around this time. I still have gifts to buy and wrap and then ship off to my far-away family and I'm running out of time! However, in the evenings, I do love sitting in my living room under the soft glow of my tree lights with my kids and my husband. I love the sparkly, glowing part of Christmas.

Joking aside, I understand your feeling panicky over how time is running out. Do you also have to deal with malls and/or commercial centers being like anthills swarming with ants? Most people, it seems, buy presents well into December and so those places become impossibly full.

Luckily for me, I grew up alienated from my extended family so I don't usually buy them presents unless visiting.  :chin:

I'm not really into it this year, tho I do have all my minimalist shopping done.  Once again, I'm sending all my far-flung nearest and dearest a gift card to a movie theater near them so they can see a movie over the holiday on me, with plenty of hot dogs, cola and popcorn from the concession stand.

I know it's a religious song, but I've always loved this one, esp. sung in Irish:

I know it's a religious song, but I've always loved this one, esp. sung in Irish:

The images in this video have nothing to do with Christmas, and the only word I could understand was Hallelujah, so this is a beautiful song to listen to any time of year! (And I love Enya)

Also, as far as shopping goes, I avoid the mall like I would avoid a family with Bubonic Plague. :zombie: I go to that place about twice a year, but not anywhere near Christmas. I'm not a fan of crowds, especially hordes of greedy materialistic teenagers with too much time on their hands.
Most of my shopping is online (the internet is the best thing to ever happen to christmas) and Craigslist. Yes, I buy used things for gifts sometimes. That way I can get better presents or more presents that have only been gently used. Not always, but I'm a big fan of saving money when possible.

I just finished baking 6 dozen cookies for my girlfriend's assorted grand-nieces and nephews, so I'm feeling somewhat better.  They're spending the weekend with her for a little vacation (for their parents, I think) of Xmas activities.  Teresa's daughter will be there telling them stories, and is looking for a pair of elf ears to wear for the occasion.

If I had a fruity drink, I would be feeling like this:

I just remembered that I have to get a present for my friend at work. However, she is not difficult to buy for. I saw a nice leather bound volume of Dr Who stories at Barnes & Noble. Anything Dr Who is guaranteed to make her happy.

You aren't the only one, AngelOfDeath. Putting a minor key tinge on wretched Christmas music and giving it Lovecraftian lyrics helps. A little.  :cthulhu:

Death to the world! Cthulhu's come:
Let Earth abhor this thing.
Let every mind prepare for doom,
As anguish and woe he'll bring.

Up from the sea, R'lyeh did rise:
The cultists awestruck dumb.
With ancient rites so wretched and perverse,
Cthulhu's time has come.

Death to the world! Cthulhu reigns.
The Great Old Ones Destroy
With wrath and doom, so cruel and foul,
Replete with obscene joy.

He rules the Earth with dreadful might,
And through our ghastly dreams
His twisting turning tentacles
Elicit from us maddened screams.

Cthulhu's time has come.

I saw this on twitter today.

Me, trying to explain the movie "A Christmas Story" to a European friend.

"It's about a little boy who really wants a BB gun for Christmas."

"He wants a gun?"

"Err, yeah, but it's a toy."

"Guns are toys?"

"Um ... so everyone tells him no that he'll shoot his eye out."

"Yes, they are right."

That's "Elfing-Hilarous"!! ;D

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who brought their dogs to see Santa at the shop! Many of the dogs coming in were dressed in the occasion to, some as elves or reindeer...one of the workers there told me the best one that day was a large white dog that came in dressed as the "Abominable Snowman".

Each dog received a small bags of delicious treats, and the owners received a printed picture of their pets with Santa enclosed in a little plastic frame.

Kahlua loves going to this pet store, he gets to meet other dogs, walk the isles looking at the different treats, sometimes he gets a bath and they always give him a small treat when he visits.
Before we leave we always stop by the cages with the kats in them...these are rescue kats and are not for sale, but if people are interested a local shelter works with them to set up adoption.
Yesterday one really mean kat hissed at him, and he started barking like crazy, and then a couple other dogs started barking at the kats...I wanted to join in, but decided maybe I should act like an adult and refrained from joining in.

I asked Santa if he preferred kids over the animals and he said the pros and cons for both sort of cancel each other out...kids sometimes cry and the animals take for ever to look in the right direction for a good picture, kids sometimes pull at his beard (His was fake) and dogs sometimes bite and pull on his gloves and boots, and both if excited or anxious enough might pee on him:)

Anyway it was fun...Happy Holidays :)

Yeah. :notsure: Maybe he'll climb the stairs instead, look at your locked door, let out a long sigh, turn around and climb back down.

Does your 6 year old believe in Santa, if you don't mind my asking? My 8 year old niece still does, and even wrote a long letter to Santa which she placed under the Christmas tree. She doesn't have older siblings to ruin things for her and doesn't hang out with older kids so...

Just the other day she told a Santa at the mall everything she expects to receive this Christmas. I don't have the heart to insinuate that it's all just a story.

Kahlua is an interesting name, but did you name him after a coffee-flavoured liqueur? :notsure:

(I googled it. :P )

One part vodka, one part Kahlua, add perhaps two parts milk, some crushed ice,  and you have a "Dark Russian" which is a dangerously delicious drink that can render you stoned in short order.  You can be seduced by such beverage delights because they taste so good.  You pay dearly the next morning somewhere between a class six to class ten hangover. Dark Russians, containing Kahlua, are instruments of the devil.....But tasty.  That's the way Mephistopheles works,

Kahlua like brew can be made at home if desired.  There are recipes on You Tube.  The critical ingredient is vanilla bean which can be expensive in some parts of the world.

Kahlua is actually a brand name for a particular alcoholic compound.  The brand name product is of a high quality and consistency.  It is a pleasing added ingredient to a good cup of coffee. Brazillian coffee of course,Silver.

Thanks, Mags, that's the one. I also like the extreme opposite, which is Campari and soda, or, even more bitter, Campari and Indian tonic. The last one is great on a very hot, humid day.

Semi-serious question:  am I really the only person on Earth who loves fruitcake?  I haven't been able to find any in the stores for years, and when I ask people look at me as if I'm crazy to want it.  At this point I'll have to start making my own.

I like semi-like fruitcake.  :computerwave:

The last time I saw a fruitcake at the store was many years ago at a, Super A Foods Store, in the LA area. I don't even know if they have those stores anymore.  :notsure:

If you do want to make your own, it is worth the effort. I know and love Fanny Cradock's white fruit cake that we used to make. I could only find this non-metric recipe:

Fannys Famous White Christmas Cake

7 oz sifted self raising flour
31/2 oz cornflour
9 1/2 oz floured, rough cut glacé cherries
8 oz rough cut glacé pineapple
7 1/2 oz unsalted butter
8 oz sifted icing sugar
4 eggs
4 oz mixed diced peel
8 oz sultanas
2 oz roughly chopped walnuts or hazelnuts
2 oz diced angelica
2 fl oz brandy
Grated rind and juice of an orange
1 teaspoon each of orange flower water and rose water

Sift the flour and cornflour together, set aside. In another bowl, mix the cherries, pineapple, peel, sultanas, nuts and angelica. In a third bowl, mix brandy, flower waters and orange juice. Add the eggs and whip thoroughly. Cream the butter until very soft. Gradually whip in the sugar and orange rind. With your hands, take a handful of flour and mixed fruits with a little liquid and beat up by hand. Keep adding until all mixed. Turn into prepared tin, sit in a base of brown papers and bake for one hour at Gas Mark 3, then turn down the heat to Gas Mark 2 1/2 for a further 20 minutes. Test with a skewer or listen for singing. If required bake for another 20 minutes at reduced heat of Gas Mark 2. Cover with almond paste when cold, ice with fondant.

We have something similar down here, called panettone, which is to Christmas what turkey is to Thanksgiving.

No trouble finding one of these in supermarkets, seems like you have to swim through boxes of boxes of panettone piled high along the aisles.  ::)

I don't like it very much, except with ice cream. :yum:

You can find panatone in Britain, but you might have to look for it.

However, somewhat more substantial is the good ol' xmas pudding! Absolutely stuffed with goodies and calories!

It is, basically, dried fruit and nuts glued together with a little bit of a sort of flour/water mix and sugar. Plus sone rum, brandy, sherry or whatever tickles your fancy.

Traditionally 6 silver three penny coins, really tiny, were included - it was good luck to find one.  Bad luck break a tooth on one or get one stuck in your gullet! It might be a pud you masticate slowly and carefully if such a trafition was observed...

I doubt that the de-luxe, brandy soused, individual pie I got ftom the supermarket will contain such. I will not be havingbit with the traditional brandy butter ir sauce either, too many sweet thjngs together - vanilla yogurt is my favoured lubricant. Maybe I will annoint it with a little cream liquer as well...

Yum.  I used to hide a new penny in a loaf of bread for New Year's luck -- of course I let everyone know the penny was in there so they could make sure their slice didn't have it before they started eating.  And some people would look thru all the bread slices trying to find the luck.

What!! Chocolate in xmas pud!! Sacrilege!

It has so much fruit and nut in it it could be considered "one of your five", it's healthy! Well, apart from the million calories from the sugar and the fats (it should have suet in it really)...

Um, OK, call it "choco-fruity-nutty pud" and serve it any other time . . .

My New England Yankee wife used to make Plum Pudding. I suspect that Xmas pudding is similar.  The Plum pudding had an essential ingredient that seemingly disappeared during the cooking process. The suspect ingredient was suet.  If I remember correctly (maybe not)  The stuff was cooked by immersing the pot of ingredients in a larger pot of boiling water.

That pudding was similar to fruit cake but much better for my tastes.

It used to be a sort of custom to send fruit cakes as Christmas presents. Tastes change and now receiving a fruit cake would be regarded as a snarky way the sender contrived for insulting the recipient.

There is a small town in the state of Georgia called Claxton. At one time that town claimed to be the fruit cake capitol of the world. There were several bakeries that collectively made a gazillion cakes and shipped them all over the nation. Eventually the bakers began to compromise the quality of their ingredients for the purpose of increasing profits, one would assume. Not surprisingly, demand for the inferior fruit cakes diminished.

Every culture probably has a variety of "boil in the bag" type pudding. Yes, English xmas pud was traditionally just tied in a cloth and boiled, making a real cannonball of a product. But using a basin as a mold gave the more usual flat bottomed job, easier to cut, you see now. That led on to baking instead of boiling, retains more of the flavours!

I once heard of people frying slices of these puds, never tried that myself.

Suet is traditional, probably substituted with some sort of vegetable derived stuff now commercially.

There is a small town in the state of Georgia called Claxton. At one time that town claimed to be the fruit cake capitol of the world. There were several bakeries that collectively made a gazillion cakes and shipped them all over the nation. This is very interesting, I will be driving right by Claxton in May, on my way to Savannah. Maybe the Claxton Bakery makes fruitcake better than other nasty fruitcakes. I should make a plan to stop by, it might be fun!

We used to make Spotted Dick. Have you ever had it?

Speaking of puddings, one thing that has never crossed my lips is black pudding. My Jewish genes react violently to the thought of eating pig's blood.

Even with a nice piece of really mature cheddar, but it has to be dark, high cocoa choc. That's part of my "ch" diet: chicken, chirozo, cheese, chocolate, chillis, chappatis . . . All together once, it was an, er, experience!

Last xmas food shopping done, went by bus - good thing, the car pack was full of prowling motors looking for temporary lairs. No loose oardnips for roasting, had to settle for sweet potato and carrots. Loads of gaps on the shelves but whole hoards of harrassed looking people.

Must be Annual Car Wash Day as well, one in the bay and six waiting! Maybe that's hubby not being able to find a parking space so just making use of that bit of territory to do two jobs?

Not going near that supermarket until Wednesday now!

Heheh. Luckily for me I live just a block away from a supermarket, no need to go by car and fight for a parking space (I have been practicing my angry glare for confrontational drivers).

Dragonia, that teeny weeny town may not even be there anymore.  It is somewhere over there near Fort Stewart if I remember rightly.  In the olden days the town was not only known for fruit cakes but also as a wicked hill billy speed trap. I hope that it has outlived both its reputations.

I always think the same when I see Jacob Bronowski, in "The Ascent of Man" (1973) having to sit at the keyboard and screen of a large frame computer to get a very simple wire-frame image of a vase.

Hah! Discovered a new way to get slivers of garlic under the skin of my chicken before I roast it. Used to slide slivers into slits.

Now I will try a large bore stainless steel delivery needle on a 1ml syringe. Just "punch" a sliver out of the tooth with the needle and inject it. Might need some olive oil in the syringe. Tried it first with just air; that compressed and then, all of a sudden, the sliver shot across the kitchen like a bullet!

I am still looking for that sliver, the kitchen smells very strongly of garlic that I can'tt cook or wash away. There was quite a pop, like the "spud guns" we had as kids.

Oh, well, scrap the garlic injector... :(

There was so much resistance that it popped the needle off the syringe.  I only have expensive 100ml syringes with Luer lock fitting and was not going to use one of those. Ho, hum, back to slipping slivers into slots...

Ye, your injector sounded a bit bit weird to me.
I do two slots and insert the crushed jar stuff and a few squirts of plastic lemon.
Soy sauce of course for salty goodness, but not in the slots.

It started snowing here in Michigan yesterday afternoon, and it's been slowly falling ever since, so we awoke this morning to a beautiful White Christmas...

My daughter and son-in-law are here for the holiday weekend visiting, so we've been spending a lot of time together. (My son was with us for a while, but he injured his leg earlier this week so he didn't stick around with us while we hung out in town!

This is us down in Detroit on Saturday!

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas...lot going on today. Have to start cooking, still need to open presents, and then we have to drive across town to visit the rest of the family.

Talk to you all tomorrow!

Peace!

I think you should keep tinkering with a garlic injector.  And video taping it.

OK, so you want a video of garlic bullets pinging around my kitchen, olive oil explosions . . . .

Hmm, has possibilities. . .
