well, everybody's got a story, you know. mine is about old motorcycles that lots of people don't remember.
but i can still be impressed by a quality performance in other fields
except bagpipes. i'm not impressed by bagpipes.

I agree on the bagpipes. 40 seconds is my limit.

That is unless it is a rank beginner playing them then it sounds like a bunch of cats in a burlap bag being beaten.

 But that can be said of most instruments! Take violins, for instance. Something so beautiful can and will be turned into an orchestra of nails on chalkboard if not done right. :P
I love bagpipes. There's a bagpipe band called Tartanic and they are awesome.

I must say I agree with you. I like bagpipes as well.
As a wannabe piper: ;D

Cool! I'll look them up! 8)
No, I only have a basic practice chanter. It's a workout for the lungs and is a way to learn the fingering, but I'd like to get one with better sound.

Less cats to beat? ;)
In this case "better" means "louder" so in theory, more cats. ;)
 Thanks, I needed a good laugh today.
I went thru a real bagpipe loving phase in my 20s. My neighbors must have hated me, but they threw loud parties so weren't really in a position to complain.
Here's something even the haters might like -- for one reason if not another.
Don't get me wrong, I actually like the bagpipes. I only mentioned that when played wrong they sound bad.
I like the song they just played. I thought I heard some Metallica in there but I can't be sure. Anyway, I also heard a somewhat Irish lilt which I love. My co-workers and I were traveling to change computers and software as we bought the company out. One evening we were taken to an Irish pub. There were no bagpipes but I loved listening to the live music.
When I was a rank beginner at the guitar I'm sure I sounded awful. I eventually wound up in four garage bands (never got to play live) and solo performances before crowds that were impromptu. it was my backup instrument as I sang.
Anyway, any instrument played right sounds wonderful, except maybe the triangle.
I visited Lindisfarne a few years ago. There was a piper there and he was all you could hear all over the island. >:(
I paid him £20 to shut up for an hour. He was quite happy with the deal.
Fiction and fact from Icarus almanac: The Bagpipe is an evil instrument that was invented by the Scots. The purpose was not to make music but to antagonize the Viking invaders of old.
I'm impressed by impressions. And well formed melons.
I doubt that Portland has anything that can't be found in your magnificent city. :smokin cool:
