Title: Music that moves you
Post by: xSilverPhinx on March 16, 2018, 11:46:36 PM
...moves you emotionally, that is. ;)

Two that bring me close to tears are 'Nessun Dorma' (sung by Pavarotti) and 'Gift of a Thistle' (from the Braveheart OST).

It's funny because I don't even listen to opera and Scottish bagpipe music.  ::)

What about you?

Thanks, my dear. This is a welcome theme, but I fear I am going to submit too many examples. You may have noticed that I like quite a wide range of, mainly, classical music (for want of a better term) that moves me deeply.

Whilst I firmly believe religion is a load of bollocks, there has been some truly magnificent music written over the years with a religious subtext.

Nabucco - Hebrew Slaves Chorus

G.Allegri: Miserere mei, Deus Choir of Ormond College

Hermes, that little girl puts something in the hat and then Beethoven's Ninth happens. Magnificent.   That has been one of my favorite flash mobs for a long time.

Here is a little girl who does Nessum Dorma and a separate variety of other impressive classic compositions with a stunning voice.....  In this one, start at about one minute and finish at less than three. The rest is just show biz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIU8TlMbags.

It is gratifying that some of my friends here at HAF do enjoy formal music.

I confess that I also like swing,  That's because I grew up with that kind of stuff.....a really really long time ago.   Dial up the Munich Swing Orchestra on You tube.  Some of the Teutons like swing, one would observe.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MxsJyXTO5M

The Brits are not immune to that old music. Here is a BBC group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcknIbp-A4Y&list=PL_qkxQTGaIA0fP3zcDe1w9An3ST8bxfFw

Japanese kids dig swing also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0xRQb_K1hE  Harmonie, check out the licorice stick solo at about 2:30.  These kids can play.  There are several Japanese high school groups that compete with Swing music.

I also like Vaughan Williams. I have two other excellent versions of The Lark Ascending played by Hilary Hahn and Nigel Kennedy, of which I think I prefer Kennedy's. I think you will enjoy the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto, which has a similar bucolic feeling.

Then I'm sure you will like Benny Goodman playing Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto (conducted by Copland):

I like most of the Copeland compositions.  I fear that I have some conflicting tastes.  For example I am a dedicated fan of classical guitar work.  Maybe because I became close friends with a young man in Lithuania who is a classical guitarist.  Long ago I liked Sergovia and Montoya but there are now so many brilliant classical guitarists that I can not select a favorite one.

Among the brilliant ones is Tatiana Ryzhkovia.  She is a lovely woman, one of the top tier sexy countenances but most importantly a superb musician. Here she is ...all four of her in some kind of clever contrivance for video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPu1om4WZsQ  She does many You tube solos of course.

One of the other beautiful woman guitarists is Ana Vidovich.  She plays a bit differently, perhaps a tiny bit more elegantly, than Tatiana but it is almost always moving stuff. There are numerous Asian women who are in the same league as those premier guitarists. Yenne Lee...https://www.youtube.com  How can a human manipulate all ten fingers so precisely as to make those wonderfully structured melodic sounds?

You are right, I am a purist, but perhaps this kind of mix can reach some youngsters who would not normally listen to Beethoven. If it then awakens some curiosity that prompts them to explore the original music, then it is a good thing.

Personally, I cannot abide listening to any pop music after listening to classical music - it always sounds very flat and boring to me. For me, it is always better to listen to classical music after pop. Try it yourself: listen to Carmina Burana or The Firebird, and then switch on the local pop radio station.

I don't like most pop music very much (anymore), it does sound rather flat and boring (well, maybe except for Ed Sheeran's 'Shape of you' :tellmemore:).

I wish! No, it's a program that simulates simple natural selection. This one, to be exact: http://rednuht.org/genetic_cars_2/ (http://rednuht.org/genetic_cars_2/). You let it run and the cars will suffer mutations (you can tweak a few variables) and hopefully, eventually a winning design will finish the race. It got so frustrated because I had left it running for over 200 generations at that point and the cars still couldn't finish the race so I decided to add some drama, namely, the music. :P

To make matters worse Recusant was also running the program and his cars finished after around 60 generations, if I recall correctly.  :sulk:

That's interesting. I think the rhythm of Ravel's Bolero could have worked as well, with that long build-up to the climax.

I find this piece soothing, but why I'm not sure.  Maybe a resigned "there there" quality about it?

Thank you so much for introducing me to Max Richter, who is a new composer I can explore. It reminds me of Arvo Pärt's music, especially his Spiegel im Spiegel.

That's one of the joys of "classical" music: always something new to discover. I remember how excited I was when I found the music of Takemitsu a few years ago.

Dear old Wagner is an interesting case. I absolutely adore his music, but many people are put off by extraneous factors like his personality and the appropriation of his music by the Nazis. I just appreciate his music, regardless of whether he was a nice person or not.

I guess you were listening to the great Georg Solti Ring Cycle?

Well, yes, except that bikkies and cheese is usually biscuits of the cracker variety. The cheese should include a good aged Cheddar, a Brie/Camembert and a decent blue, perhaps Stilton, Gorgonzola or Roquefort.  Also served with some grapes and perhaps strawberries and definitely a glass of good port...

I suppose I'd like to go unconventional once again.

I've played a Swedish-made game called "Brothers - a tale of two sons" recently, which, having no dialogue (Not exactly true, but they used a fictional language) made a great use of its soundtrack for immersion/emotional message.

It is relatively uncomplicated, as music goes, but it does make the game great. I especially like the endgame themes (like Winged Hope and Heading Home, starting at 50:44. What can I say... I have a weak spot for cellos and eerie vocals)

I suppose this soundtrack doesn't make much sense outside the game, but within proper context, I did find it... Moving.

A few of my favourites:

The fast-paced electronic with the female vocals:

The string instrument (I don't know which, though):

...And the entire Deus Ex:Human Revolution soundtrack.  8)

No doubt that JS Bach was the greatest composer in that period. He has a staid image today, but he could be quite naughty when he was young. Also quite active: he fathered 20 children with two wives.

Hermes; Ms Martinez has the ability to use her voice as if a musical instrument. A stupendous ability.   We yanks had a similar talent in the person of June Christie  ( back in the day) who was a part of the Stan Kenton musical group.  Kenton had long, super long fingers, he could reach more than an octave with his hands on piano keys. And he did so often enough.  Ms Christie was spectacularly able to make vocal sounds that rivaled Kentons ability to span octaves as if they were easy.

Few voices have the range that these extraordinary women have.

QuoteEditor's Note: While the human brain is hardwired to feel pleasure for basic survival necessities, such as eating and sex, music—although obviously pleasurable—doesn't offer the same evolutionary advantages. I have a dear friend in Lithuania. He is a young man who is an accomplished classical guitarist. In one of his visits to my home in the US he told me that the ambition of the classical guitarist is: "To make her believe that she is beautiful".  He used the feminine gender to describe the instrument.

Here is one of the presentations that illustrate that wish.  Tatyana herself is beautiful, well even sexy, but she does passionate justice to her guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01VjNfR-Dfs

Superb, Icarus. Hearing that compelled me to listen again to this powerful evocation of Spain: Falla's Cancion del fuego fatuo from El AMor Brujo, sung by Laura Vital.

The jaded among us may see this as Hokey.  Hokey or not..............this is the kind of thing that our world  so desperately needs.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdQpQgYHc4w

This is great stuff - nothing wrong with a bit of crowd-pleasing spectacle. Mahler and Berlioz were exponents of this kind of thing.

Please appreciate these two remarkably talented Brits doing the Impossible Dream.

I confess that I am a fan of the Man of LaMancha. I have tilted at some of my own windmills in the past.  Haven't we all?
