Title: It's Sunday. What are you going to do today?

I'm watching Despicable Me 2 for the umpteenth time. Love this film and the others too.

Rape the fields and pillage the villagers. Like an other Sunday.

I'll pamper my wife. It is Valentine's day, so I'll cook some nice meals for her; give her a full body massage and cream in her feet.

I am working on the final assembly of my concrete sculpture. I just need to saw two lengths of 10 mm diameter stainless steel threaded rod (one 74 mm and one 194 mm), but will have to wait until tomorrow. I don't want to disturb the neighbours with such a noisy operation. The installation on site is planned for next Sunday.

Not much of anything. Maybe finish wiring up the new lights on the walkway at the front of the house. I'll probably get some takeout for lunch, as a lot of places are closed for inside dining, and it's windy and a bit cold for sitting outside. Today is our 40th wedding anniversary.

Thanks!

Finished wiring the walkway lights. Had to go buy a timer/power supply. The lights haven't worked for awhile, but we were putting new ones on the other side to lighten it up even more. The new ones work, and the new power supply has a photocell so they go off and on depending on the ambient light. No more resetting the timer!  :)

Tomorrow (Sunday) I'm going to make this house even more puppy-proof, to get it ready for my new pup Iago who will be coming home on March 8. This means all my books go upstairs (again). Seriously, my bookshelves and their contents really get around. ::)

I'm also going to clean out the back room, where both Joy and Iago will sleep. There can't be anything there above a certain value that they can get their puppy jaws on. Nor beneath a certain value, because I already know Joy is an avid destroyer. I see her ways...

Laid down a bunch of mulch yesterday, and hosed it really well to keep it heavy enough not to blow away in the crazy winds which were predicted. I hear it blowing like crazy out there. Time to take a look. Looking good! Our neighbors put down red mulch a few weeks ago, and the wind blew it all over the neighborhood.

i shall finalize the book work so as to pay my taxes, and give the morons in my government more of my money to argue about.

actually, i consider only half of them to be morons, to be honest. but that half is quite powerful when it comes to taxing the undeserving poor and giving to the rich.

My wife does the taxes. Since she was a stay-at-home mom for most of my career, I put her on paying the bills and doing the taxes. Now, she's the only one working, but she still pays the bills and does the taxes.  ;D Time to go load the dishwasher and start it...

I trimmed the hedge in my garden today, because between March 1st and September 30th, all hedge cutting is forbidden, according to the German Federal Nature Conservation Act. During this period no large cuts are allowed on "hedges, living fences, bushes and other woody plants. The reason behind the law is that bushes and trees provide homes for native birds, insects, and other animals, and offer them protection against their natural predators. The green areas provide them a place for sleeping and resting, and for mating season. Anyone who breaks the law can be fined up to 50,000 euros!

50,000 was indeed quoted in a newspaper. That could have been a typing mistake, because I read in another newspaper that the maximum fine is 10,000 EUR. Even that I find crazy.

It's about 15 miles as the crow flies, but 25 miles by highway, so about 25 minutes. We'll probably go 50 or so miles on the Pacific Coast Highway, and get lunch somewhere.

I used to go to the beach about three times per year. It was a six hour drive to the Florida panhandle. I haven't been able to go in years due to health reasons. But take a few pictures while you're out there and share them. :)

I am just messing around with some left over fast set concrete. Just randomly playing with crazy modifications of spherical shapes. The material cannot be handled as easily as pottery clay, but I've found a way to roll it into slabs and bend them before it sets in about 20 minutes. Just slightly too much water makes it too floppy to handle well. Luckily, this stuff isn't as corrosive on the hands as traditional cement, so I don't have to wear rubber gloves.

Well today is my first 'Mass Womble'. I'm meeting up with some other 'Wombles' a few minutes walk away and then we're going to clear up the litter on the verges of one of the main roads into Leeds.

This afternoon I'm going to be experimenting with 'bullet hinges'.

Good luck with your shot at bullet hinges.

Sometimes known as a barrel hinge. Has anybody got any experience of using them?

Well did 2 hours of litter picking. There were 8 or so people out and one family stopped and joined in. I actually found a tiny little plastic zip-lock bag with white powder in it! Can't imagine what it is. And I'm not going to try it either!  ;D

that is absolutely not what americans call a bullet hinge. over here it's a weld-on hinge without screwplates, for tight clearanace hinges.

how do you set them up so that are in initial alignment?

I'll tell you when I've done it! I've seen a couple of videos but they aren't too clear. I've had some advice on Facebook.

If it were me installing those hinges, I'd have an alignment tool. I guess if they press in (I've never used them either) it might be a problem getting them aligned. But if they set in epoxy, I'd put them in both the lid and the box, and then open and close the lid...slowly and carefully. The epoxy wouldn't be cured, so the hinges would self-align.

Here's a different type of barrel hinge that is easier to install and adjust-

Well, shit, that borked.

It does not even feel like a sacrifice, because I can eat butter, avocado pears, cheese, and tomatoes, all of which I love. It was a bit difficult weaning myself off bread, but it was worth it.

I do eat meat, but not very often. I like fish very much and eat it several times a week. I guess the cheese I eat daily provides enough protein and calcium.

Ye, you obviously need a knee transplant,
I'm ontogenically
What's with this "ontogenically" word?
The powers suggested it to me, I think I'm going to use it all the time, it describes me man.
Quotethe process of an individual organism growing organically; a purely biological unfolding of events involved in an organism changing gradually from a simple to a more complex level
Because of my personal genetics I'm unable to sympathise yet l'm impelled to rant on your behalf.
There's all those coma people who aren't going to need their knees, but the ethics twats won't let you have one.  You could get a  foreign knee for the price of a couple of kilos of salmon, less if you'd settle for a girls knee, but then you'd be limited to running like a girl.
I hope now you're out of that accursed union you can at least get one of these.

Finish up some sprinkler plumbing, eat a bit of candy purchased from See's. Went to CostCo yesterday, figuring to pick up a leg of lamb or lamb loin chops, but all they had were the ribs, and those are way too fatty for my taste. Went with t-bone steaks instead. That's just as good.

Sorry about your knee, Tank. I woke up during the night Friday with painful muscle cramps. I've been doing squats (90 pounds) and have to be careful with ligaments. First time for the muscles. Fortunately I had some muscle relaxers left over from a back injury.

The one son and I ran power lines for the sprinkler valves into the attic. Partially run; still need to run about 15 feet and connect them. The son completed the sprinkler feed lines from the valves to the "garden", and from the supply line to the valves. I say "garden" because it seems more like a buffet for the local rats and raccoons.   >:(

Nice guy that I am, I was at least moderately irritated by the goings on at the church across my street.  This church is one of the Hillsong types.  They cater to the younger set and have a propensity to make a lot of noise and create a carnival like atmosphere for the congregants.  Yesterday..Easter egg day, there were all manner of large and expensive carnival type rides and slides and such, deposited on the church grounds.  The children of the congregants had a high old time and of course found Easter eggs all over the area.

The part that really irritates me is the god damned drums that are apparently part of every assembly of the church goers. What Jungle drums have to do with Jesus escapes me. On a good day there are only a hundred or so cars in the parking lots.  On a Hooray day, like that leading up to Easter, there are many hundreds.  So many that the police are needed to control the huge number of cars that come and go.

The Hillsong Loony Tune outfit has an Aussie origination.  Dammit Blue you let them escape to North America.

Possibly refine the wiring in the attic. I can't find wire nuts big enough to connect all the wires. It's not a matter of too many, the supply wire is #1 cable and the fed wires are 14 gauge, but there are five of them and they just don't all fit. I'm looking at 2 10A draws, so the wire sizes are correct. I bought some bus bar to do the connections instead. I'll have to build out a J-box to hold them. Crawling around in the attic really sucks! I have to walk in the joists, which are 1-1/2" wide, which is killing my poor tired feet. Next time, I hire an electrician. :smilenod:

DL for crawling around the attic, use two pieces of plywood.   About 18 inches wide by 36"  or  54" long depending on the spacing of the rafters.  Works for me when, or if, I am forced into that miserably uncomfortable space.  My roof has a 5 on 12 pitch and head bumps are a possibility.

Icarus, it's engineered trusses on 24" centers, and the wiring ("romex" or its equivalent) runs on top of them, all over the place. I guess that was code back in the day. At least the inspector didn't flag it when we were buying this place. There is no clear space for more than maybe both feet on one truss at a time.

today is my 21st day living in my truck hauling sand. some 60 or 65 loads of around 40,000 pounds each.

so tonight i go home for a week and mail motorcycle parts to sweden, buy a new washing machine, see about dividing the one beehive that lasted through the winter, buy 400 pounds of sugar to mix up syrup, order some motorcycle parts for the track bike, change the oil in three trucks, take a car to the mechanic, prep my taxes, pay the accululated bills, pick up metal from the burn pile in the hayfield, sink fence posts for a cross fence on tbe north side of the farm, take some walks, set some live traps to look over the small mammals in the woods, spend some slow time with the wife, sleep late, and in general try to catch up some.

but for today ill just haul more sand.

Well today I went to see one of my grandsons playing football at a local football field. Picked litter on the way and back. 10,000+ steps and two bags of litter. Plus a bit of 'treasure', a little tea pot. :)

what else can they do with aerodynamics?

Aero is anything you want within imaginary boxes around the car. There is a maximum allowed degree of flexibility in all component parts. That is currently a bone of contention as one team has been pushing the limit on flexibility so new stiffer regs have been introduced. The point is that at high speed where downforce isn't so critical but drag is. The flexibility flattened the rear wing too much so the car had a lower drag at high speed.

The shape and minimum height of the floor pan is highly regulated. When this was not so the cars could bottom out over a large area leading to a catastrophic lose of downforce on high speed corners. This resulted in the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994.

My son was deeply involved with aerodynamics for 3 years at McLaren. His speciality at the time was fluidic simulations of airflow around the car. To test the accuracy of the simulations the cars are fitted with 'aero rakes' on the first practice of each race and at some of the testing sessions. If you look at the picture below you'll see that at each intersection and along the horizontal and vertical bars of the aero rake there are lots of little bumps, these are pressure sensors. They check the simulated pressures against the measured pressures to calibrate the simulations.

tbats facinating.afarsuperior technique tban windtunnellig. cheaper as well.

itsinteresting thathes using a canard. inmotorcycling  anything ahead of the rider is highly scrutinized, because putting the center  of pressure ahead og tbe centrr of gravity results in instabity in crosswinds.

no more NSU dustbins, for example

https://images.app.goo.gl/YqSp7ah1VWMNPqMSA

i needto look at more pictures obviously the intent is downforce on the front wheels, but im curious as to what they were thinking
Title: Re: It's Sunday. What are you going to do today?
Post by: Tank on May 25, 2021, 09:16:27 PM
But the aero on the bike has nothing at the back to counter the effect of the front. And it has no inherent lateral stability to counter a side wind.

There is a lot of talk of simplifying the designs of the front wings. They have become so sophisticated they are very adversely effected by the dirty air coming off the car in front. It stops continuous close chasing with the car in front.

The rear aerofoils are allowed one moving/powered element known as a Drag Reduction System (DRS). All the tracks have one or two DRS zones. If car A gets within 1 second of car B at a timing point before the DRS zone it is allowed to activate its DRS system at the start of the next DRS zone and deactivate it at the end of the zone. This gives the trailing car a big drop in drag and thus increase in top speed. In the past it was relatively easy to catch the car in front due to the tow effect. But it was sometimes near impossible to pass. It's now easier to get past, not automatic, but easier.

Tyres are also interesting. There are 5 grades of tyre from soft to hard. At each track 3 types are allowed. At Monaco, a slow twisty track, grades 1, 2 and 3 are used. At a fast track like Monza grades 3, 4 and 5 are used. So grade 3 can be the hardest at one track and the softest at another. Each car must use at least 2 grades of tyre in a race. Which means there is at least one compulsory pit stop. The world record for a pit stop is currently 1.82 seconds and is held by Red Bull. Pit stops over 2.5 seconds are considered poor.

thats amazing

motorcycle aero is destinedto stayfairly primitive because the most drag is causdd by tbe rider. even if hetucks in behind afairing his body still sucks the machinebackwards

therez tweaks. people try vortex gendrators, and windows to loerr side forces, but after you hang a bubble on the front the rest is mostly cosmetic

You are a nice, public-spirited person! The city I live in does have some litter, but not like where I used to live- the San Fernando Valley. It actually depresses me when I go there now; it just looks like a shithole where I used to live. Here, if someone dumps trash in the street (seldom, but stuff like fast food bags), a homeowner will go collect it and dispose of it.

BoT, I'm making a kumiko panel, sort of like this one (scroll down just past the first video to the "asa-no-ha" pic)-

https://bau-woodworks.com/kumiko-patterns-the-different-designs-of-the-japanese-wood-latticework/ (https://bau-woodworks.com/kumiko-patterns-the-different-designs-of-the-japanese-wood-latticework/)

Except that I'm making a grid of nine of them. I also made those jigs to guide the chopping of the ends of the pieces to size and shape.

WHEW!  I am glad that is over.  The door weighs nearly a hundred pounds and it was a bitch to remove and re-instal.

i had to postpone the electronic ignition

where i wanted to put the battery turns out not to have room, and i didnt have an alternative in the avsilable time.

everything pn this machinr is packed in close to stay out of the wind. i wanted to put the battety under the carburetters, but even the tiny shorai lithium thing is too big. i can put it in a tail section behind my ass but then i have to install a new seat. the ognition module can go in front of the handlebars maybe. still on the future.

my two diode-equipped spark plug wires are US$150 each. i dont want to be replacing them if i can help it.

had a fright tho. today is the Last Day available to put things right. i got it all together and to my dismay it would not start. backfired tho so i knew it had fuel and ignition. took the magneto off and filed the points, then re-adjusted the valves. nothing different as near as i could tell, but when i tried again it fired right up. go figure.

nothing left to do now but install the drive chain and load up the trailer.

An amazing race. No rain and only one safety car. Lando Norris (Mclaren) 2nd and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 3d so two Brits on the podium for the first time since 1999! Mclaren went in 18 points behind Alpine and finished 12 points ahead!

There is a panel between the back gatepost and the block wall that has broken away from them both. I discovered this yesterday afternoon after the roofers left. It got clobbered pretty hard, but I can't tell what from. Looking at it, I realized that I hadn't quite finished installing it, as it only had one screw attaching it to the gatepost. It's an interference fit between the gatepost and the wall. I'll put it all together but with more beef in the morning, when it's not hot enough to melt lead outside.

Got three anchors in the wall on the fence panel I mentioned yesterday, and two of three lag screws into it and the gate post. Got to go buy one tomorrow in the morning when it's cool and shoot it in.

Drove around the neighborhood for awhile this morning looking for the new grille for my truck. It was delivered to the wrong address at 10:17 PM yesterday. The delivery weenie took a pic but it is obviously not my garage. And who leaves a delivery in front of the garage in a residential area, anyway? :???: Fucking stupid. It was probably stolen from there, give that it was in plain sight.

The flashing red lights indicate the car's battery is exhausted and/or being replenished. This means the power is down by around 350hp so is going to slow down.

Quotewhy dont they show more in-cab video? i want to see what the driver sees when he chooses a line through the corner

No idea. Complain to the producers :)

Quotehow many laps? how many miles?

All races are the same length, with one exception, of 190 miles minimum. So in practice 190 miles falls partway around the last lap. The number of laps is determined by the length of the track. The exception is Monaco because the track is so tight and twisty and therefore slow, it has a race length of 160 miles.

The race has a maximum duration of 2 hours in a 3 hour window from the start of the race.

Quotehow long do the tires last? how many pit stops?

This is seriously tricky. There are 6 grades of slick tyres plus a full wet and an intermediate wet. So 8 possible tyres in all. The 6 slick tyres go in order of softest to hardest, obviously. But only 3 contiguous grades are available on any given race and the total sets of tyres is limited. At Monaco the three softest grades are used. At Silverstone grades 3,4 and 5 are used. During the actual race these are called the soft (red band), medium (yellow band) and hard (white band) tyre. Each team must use at least 2 different grades of tyre during race thus guaranteeing at least one pit stop. If the race is declared wet the race starts on full wet tyres then any combination of tyres can be used throughout the race. A race is declared wet when there is standing water somewhere on the racing line.

There is no refueling during the race. There is a maximum fuel limit of 100kg. The cars never start with a full tank. The cars must finish with 1 litre of fuel for testing. If the don't they are disqualified. When Andrew was performance engineer one of his jobs was calculating the fuel load of the car at the start.

Quote from: billy rubin on July 30, 2023, 11:37:15 PMtank, what is your boy doing with lando?

He is Lando's principal race engineer. This means he runs the car during the race keeping a very close eye on the telemetry. He is the only person who will talk to Lando during the race. There is also a performance engineer who looks after tyres and fuel and a strategy person who works on pit stops etc.

Quotewhat does he say about this race?

He loves Spa.

Quotewhat is his opinion of where the technology is going?

Don't know at the moment but we're off to America for two weeks next week so I'll know a lot more about that when I get back.

Quote from: billy rubin on July 30, 2023, 11:40:03 PMwhats the deal with this verstappen guy? does he have competition?

His father and his mother were both racing drivers. His father an F1 driver. His dad gave up driving when Max was born and he groomed him to be an F1 world champion. A bit like the Willaims sisters father in tennis. He's the youngest ever F1 driver at 17. When he first drove in F1 he wasn't road legal. He is absolutely focused on winning.

Quoteis this a series competition?

Yes. Next year they are trying for 24 races. It is the largest sporting event on the planet regards viewing. 490,000 people attended Silverstone (British Grand Prix) this year with an average ticket price of $150. More people watch F1 every year than watch the World Cup when it is staged. The weekend starts on Friday with the main race on Sunday. Some races happen at night like Singapore so the live show coincides with European mid afternoon prime time. Some are held at night for reasons of temperature eg Saudi.

Quotedo they race elsewhere for points over the season?

Yes all over the world.

Quotehow does this work?

Insanely complex logistics. :)

Quotewhat is the history?

Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One

Quotewhere do they go next?

The whole show stops next week for 2 weeks. The factories are locked up and closed and the FIA has people on site to make sure no work takes place. Breaking the 'summer break' rules can result in significant fines. This is why we can see Andrew over this period.

The next race is the 27th August in Zandvoort in the Netherlands. Vastapens home race. A mid length bendy track by the sea. F1 doesn't race on ovals just dedicated tracks and some street circuits like Monaco.

this four wheel stuff is fascinating

but i have to say tbat to me, two wheels is less a race than the exercise of an art form.

i havent worked this through but this fluffy video captures pieces of it

i dont quite know how to express this, but to me pushing a mototcycle to the limits of physics  is a musical composition.

not trying to be ostentatious but speed on two wheels is much more to me than what it appears like to other peopke

i dont know how to explain this

and the TT would be a master composition. at least for me.

the small ones are often the most challenging. you have no horsepower to make up for a mistake, so your success is all basef on skil in riding and picking the lines.

these formula one cars have a battery assist and regenerative braking? so the ifea is to finish the race with the battery just barely stone dead?
Title: Re: It's Sunday. What are you going to do today?
Post by: Tank on August 02, 2023, 09:48:43 PM
They have regenerative breaking and a generator/motor fitted to the turbo charger. When the driver accelerates the G/M winds the turbo up to stop turbo lag. When the turbo is at full speed the G/M harvests energy from the exhaust flow and dumps the power into the battery.

I have had a successful Sunday brazing together a 500 mm diameter aluminium tray that is going to form part of a concrete garden sculpture. I was using a MAPP gas torch and HTS-2000 fluxless aluminium brazing rods. The base plate was cut from 3mm aluminium sheet on a CNC machine. My next job will be to clean it up and give it a matt finish by soaking it in a 0.1M NaOH solution for an hour or two. I had to buy a large stainless steel basin to hold the solution. This is the design.

No, I haven't done it yet. You are right, but I've done it before and believe me I've handled worse things than sodium hydroxide, and it is quite convenient in my situation. In my day I used to make and handle nasty things like the diabolical diazomethane, that is not only a highly toxic gas, but also carcinogenic and explodes if you just look at it. Literally, because light can set it off. Other baddies I've handled were diisobutyl aluminium hydride, benzyl iodide, and mustard gas.

Yeesh! I'll pass. I have dabbled with nitrogen triiodide, though.

As for myself, I got the old grille off my truck and attached the old brackets to the new grille. I need to go and get some j-nuts to install the turn signal/parking lamp buckets. They were mickey-moused in by my father in law when he put that incorrect grille in.

It is Sunday and I already did what I was going to do on Sunday.

I set my alarm for 5 AM so that I could wake up and watch the womens football (soccer)match between Sweden and USA. I am not a morni ng person but this was an important event that needed my help. It was tremendous game in which USA dominated in all categories. The US women made 11 shots on goal to only one SOG for Sweden.

The square head women were plenty good and their Goalie was unbelievable. She blocked all those shots with her astounding athletic ability..

In the end My side lost on penalty kicks. 5-4

I'm rooting for the Swedes from here on. If my side loses, then I want them to lose only to the champions.

Thanks! (if "swish" is British jargon for nice) It's the design of grille that the truck came with. Looking at the picture, I can see where the bumper is bent. I was at an antique vehicle meetup last Saturday afternoon, and I realized that putting a new grille in the truck was the start of a slippery slope. I mentioned that to another attendee, who asked what I meant. I explained that once something shiny went on, more stuff had to be replaced to the same level of shiny. To straighten and replate that front bumper is about $500. All the side trim needs polishing and in the case of the lower trim, needs new wood-grain tape. I'm stopping at the grille, since I just wanted it to be the correct design. I have a friend who has dropped $60k in his truck, and it isn't even completely assembled. That amount doesn't include labor, because he's done almost all the work himself. He had "help" with the paint job, having it done at a body shop. But he's doing "indentured servitude" by sanding vehicles for the body shop manager, to pay for that paint job.

It is a '70. Those hub caps started in '73. The originals looked like that (beginning in '69) except the center part was dished in and the "bowtie" was painted blue. The originals have been replaced over time as they got lost. I'd like a step side and I like the '67s for the lack of side marker lights and the slanted front portion of the hood (same as '68, for the hood).

That's about what I'd want, except an automatic because I'm the only one who can drive a stick. It has a 402 cubic inch big block. Starting in '69 the parking brake is a pedal instead of the lever.

what did you do to get that? bore out a 396?

Yes, the 402 is a 396 bored .030 over. That's the factory's work, not mine. The engine has been bored out once, about 30 years and 100k miles ago. It's due again. Don't know how much, maybe enough that it can't be done again. It has the 400 THM automatic transmission in it.

shoot i love the turbo 400. i had one in my 1950 hudson. the traditional hot rod go-to, along with the detroit locker.

you have a truck that i would love to take away from you.

currently i have a 2007 silverado 3/4-ton, with a 360 small block. the only reason i even know it has spark plugs is because i can run it on gasoline.

more pitchers, please

can you re-sleeve your block?

You'd have to pry that truck out of my wife's cold, dead fingers. It's been in the family since '73. It would probably cost more to sleeve it than to just buy a new 454. But I don't need it that big a displacement, since we sold the travel trailer and bought a motor home.

Indeed. It also has those saddle tanks outside the frame rails on both sides. Good for making distance between fill ups, notorious for fires when the vehicle is t-boned and the tank is ruptured. Lots of people remove that tank and install one between the frame rails where the spare tire was. Still dangerous in a rear-end collision, but not as bad.

yes.

i live in horse and buggy country and rear end collisions are common and deadly.

the smart people put a light or reflector at tbe top of the buggy so it shows up when someone crests a hill just behind them.

but the schwarzentrubers where i live just usr a single flat wick kerosene lamp and minimal reflectors. i dont drive fast at dusk, and they try to be off tbe roads at nightfall.

In the UK you can be done for driving under the influence riding on a bicycle but not if you're riding a horse. Apparently has sufficient self determination that it is not fully under the control of the rider.

Just got back from our small vacation in the Netherlands and Bavaria. On Tuesday we drove off at 7:00 (AM) in order to avoid some of the major traffic congestions around Cologne on the A3. The Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia is notoriously known of not been able to deal with traffic jams for many years. We got stuck in three of them, thankfully only loosing 40 minutes. Just before crossing the German-Dutch border we tanked our car full with petrol because the petrol prices in the Netherlands are 20 cents/per litre more expensive (a little bit less than 9$ per gallon). No traffic problems in the Netherlands so we reached our favourite Indonesian restaurant "Spandershoeve" in Hilversum at noon for a bite. The meal was absolutely fantastic. From there we drove on to our hotel in Hillegom. My wife took some rest why I walked 2km into town to checkout the local thrift shop for cheap DVDs (bought 8 for 10 EUR) and to shop for drinks and food.

Next day we had breakfast in the hotel before driving off to Spa Sereen. This excellent adults only spa includes several sauna's, whirlpools, steam baths etc. I was a bit nervous, because Spa Sereen is a textile-free spa and it was the first time after my OP to walk around completely naked. The only thing I should have been really more nervous about was the merciless sun shining on my white body. At the end of the day I was as red as a lobster. At 15:30 we decided to call it a day and headed to pay my sick friend, in the hospice, a visit. We left after two hours because my friend became very tired. We said our farewells; bought along the way some ice cream and went to the family reunion, which was held in a authentic Brazilian restaurant (BARRACA Rodizio Grill & Bar in Hoofddorp). It was nice to see my brothers and their wives again as well as my niece and her boyfriend. We had some nice talks and were served loads of excellent meat and side dishes.

On Thursday we headed back to our home; on Friday we drove off again. This time to go to Bad Staffelberg in Bavaria. My wife booked a pension there because on Saturday she had a book binding course nearby. Bad Staffelberg is known to have one of the five best spas in Germany. So in the afternoon we went there to relax. It was really really great. Next day my wife went to her course an I went for a walk on the Staffelberg (+/- 30 minutes up the hill). I was rewarded with a wonderful view and a great beer in the beer garden. in then evening my wife and I had a wonderful Bavarian meal(high carb, huge portions for very low prices) in the nearby village. We drove back today; had some technical difficulties with the car (i-Stop error message, due to an empty battery?) but still managed to drive on to pickup our two cats at the cat pension and to arrive safely home.

Looks like you had a good trip! Getting to see your friend also had to be a nice part of it. Too bad he's so far away.

Here in southern California we're experiencing tropical storm Hilary. Where I'm at, the rain is gentle so far. We're in an "outlying" band with low probability of flooding..

Open letter to PJ, please allow me to use that abbreviation. It is easier to spell than Prycejosh.

If you can persuade yourself to abandon the evangelist approach, you can learn a lot here with some very decent, caring, educated, articulate people who happen not to be religious. We do not have an axe to grind. We are not attack dogs who get our jollies from intimidating religious people. Not that we are timid. We do have the capacity for scathing attacks but we are usually above any such useless activity.

Observe that out Religion section is not used often. Hammering the faithful is not what moves us unless we are led into a situation that demands it.

Give the preaching a rest and try to learn something about people who have no need for your spiritual advice. Would it surprise you to learn that we have biblical scholars here?

Best wishes for your health, wealth, and happiness.

(P.S. you can have health, wealth, and happiness without any religion at all.)

PJ has obviously been brainwashed by the preachers who influence his life as well as the society that he lives in. Bible Belt, likely.

I actually feel some compassion for the victims of those persuasive preachers. I gotta give those hucksters credit, they are good at what they do.

I agree, and yet it does not take a genius to realise that quoting someone else saying "it is proven" does not for a proof - or a good argument - make. That does seem to be one of the cornerstones of the Christian ""apologetics"" ""debate"" though.

I woke up early this Sunday morning, so decided to put together a mobile work surface I need when I start making my concrete bird feeder sculpture. I had the components lying around from previous projects, so the assembly didn't take too long. On it is the 500mm diameter aluminium tray that will hold the plates of bird food. It needs some cleaning up, but is essentially ready for use in the sculpture. I am about 80% happy with it, but have decided to rather start on the body of the sculpture first before trying again to make a better tray.

Somebody quoted Dr Miriam Grossman to promote their anti-trans belief and I wanted to know more about her. I found a lecture given by her in which she promotes the idea that science is only now confirming the facts about women's fertility that the Torah has contained for millennia. Hmm, a familiar theme, so I looked at what else was on the page (https://lessons.myjli.com/faith/index.php/lesson-05/) with her lecture. I found an article claiming that "accepting Darwinian evolution requires a leap of faith that may be more radical and less substantiated than to believe that G-d created the world in six days and on the seventh day He rested."

My curiosity thoroughly piqued, I began to explore the world of conservative Judaism. An intriguing journey, and it's more complex than I had previously known. There are even the Jewish equivalent of biblical literalists. I had thought that modern Jews believed the Talmud was an essential text. I knew that the Sadducees liked to stick to the book while the Pharisees believed rabbis were essential, but that was a long time ago. Hours later, and I don't think I've explored all the branches of this particular tree of mythology. In any case, as I understand it the site linked above is promoting a Chasidic line of belief, more or less. Not "Torah literalists" per se, but happy to believe that science can only confirm the Torah, and any discrepancy is an indication of failure on the part of science.

^ Ouch! It's funny how things change. In '88 I built an addition on my previous house. I made the forms from 2" X 6" lumber so that I could use them for joists after the foundation cured. I was knocking the forms apart with a 2 pound sledge and smashed my thumb when they slipped.  :rant1:  I went and bandaged my thumb and got back to work. Lot of sweat and blood in that job. It took me 18 months of weekends, holidays and vacation days, including after coming home from work. I sure wish I had some of that energy now!
