Quote from: billy rubin on Today at 11:27:02 AMtalking to plants might well be a useful thing.

What might be the preferred language.
A nasal one, perhaps, like French or how about a flat one, like Yorkshire?
True that plants do communicate with each other, but not with King Charles.
"Plants communicate through a host of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be separated into four broad categories, each the product of distinct chemical pathways: fatty acid derivatives, phenylpropanoids/benzenoids, amino acid derivatives, and terpenoids."

The bible tells us that a snake spoke to Eve, but it is not revealed in what language.
"The serpent said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. But God did say, 'You must not eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. Do not even touch it. If you do, you will die."

Also on the subject of the Hebrew bible.
You cannot be a Jew, Christian, or Muslim if you do not believe the Earth is flat and 6000 years old.
Put another way.
Person A: Christians believe the Earth to be only 6000 years old.
Person B: My uncle Ebenezer thinks it's a lot older than that.
Person A: No true Christian believes the Earth to be anything other than 6000 years old.

Same principle could be applied to the great flood.
True Christians believe that fossils are proof that it really happened.

talking to plants might well be a useful thing. plant sensory capabilities and responsive behaviour used to be considered a non-thing. not so much anymore.

for example

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11540076/

anyway plants respond to stimuli from their environment in ways that indicate a much more complex behavioural repertoire than they have been credited for.

it has now reached the stage at which pseudo scientific articles are written to deny plant sentience, whereas in the past it was a non question .

https://biologyinsights.com/are-plants-aware-the-science-of-plant-behavior/

interesting implications for what consciousness might look like in organisms different from us, complete with the usual imposition of anthopocentric blindspots. i recall similar attitudes regarding tool use among non humans

My recollection of her last visit was during a conversation where I and someone else (don't recall) where we stated that we had been called NAZIs on the internet. Bear in mind that anyone might be called such, at any time, on the internet. I can assure you all that I am not such, only that sometimes people make claims based on some statement one made. My record is obviously anti-Nazi. I hope that Mags comes back. The time frame doesn't matchup with a deportation, btw.

Also, expressing full agreement here that the Trumpist-controlled US military has been committing war crimes. Not to detract from the revulsion that elicits in sane Americans, I'll note that the US has a long history of extrajudicial killing and "wet ops."

It continues to refuse to acknowledge the current version of the planet's attempt to rein in the excesses of idiot violence (International Court of Justice). Blowing a civilian boat out of the water then killing survivors is openly disregarding the Geneva Convention, which is something new I think. I'm pretty sure that killing civilians piloting civilian watercraft in international waters is against other treaties that the US is party to. But then the Indians (or Indigenous Americans if you prefer) can tell you a thing or two about the US government respecting treaties it's signed.

Quote from: Icarus on Today at 03:15:48 AMBy chance I opened this thread with a date in the distant past:  November 2015. I had been exchanging  encouraging notes with Magdalena.

I worry and care about her and wonder whether she has been scooped up by the ICE men. She is a Salvadorean and a pretty bright and creative woman.

Mags, if you are out there, I send you my continued respect.

Yeah, I've thought about our hippy butterfly friend a few times this past year. Here's hoping she and all her family are safe and and dare I say happy.  :far out:

Could have used the pacing Felix the Cat smiley, but chose optimism instead.

Man, ain't that the truth. Our country has progressed further along the line towards a banana republic. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the orangutan-in-chief has found people to prosecute his criminal enterprise, but this is over the top. I truly hope that the next president is a Democrat and lasts two terms (plus more Dem leadership), so that the prosecution of all those hench persons proceeds to completion, instead of all those legal delays like Don the Con has been able to run. Frankly, I'm hoping that the Magats eat each other. There is already a pile of infighting. Face-eating leopards eating each other. As long as they stay away from me, I'm good.

The old saw about "military intelligence" being an oxymoron is embodied in living color by the swivel-eyed "Secretary of War" Hegseth. Intelligence of any sort is anathema to him.
