Title: atheist is the devil
Post by: quizlixx on July 02, 2008, 10:34:15 PM

Just goes to show you how weak their convictions are if they believe that the simple fact you disagree with them is "tempting".  ;)

I'm sure there's very few of us (public nonbelievers) around here who have heard this before. I personally used to hear it all the time before I moved to a rather liberal area. I basically just group it into the same category as heterosexual men being made to feel uncomfortable just because another man puts his penis in a different place than his own. If you're comfortable with your [strike:13k7jtqp]faith[/strike:13k7jtqp]sexuality why would someone with different [strike:13k7jtqp]beliefs[/strike:13k7jtqp]tendencies bother you?

Strange, strange people.

:D i guess i was tempting one of my best friends when he brought up religion and i had some valid points for my case. his parents don't let me come over anymore. man, theists are funny.

I "tempt" people with rationalism all the time, but it's never uninvited. If someone wants to discuss religion, they're going to get a healthy dose of reality from me (if I have time).

deadhead, anyone who can't face up to the reality of what you are without infecting the situation with their own personal dogma, fear and prejudice does not deserve the privilege of your companionship. You can't have a real friendship if there's that kind of unacceptance and judgement going on, whatever it may be against. Tell them that, see if it changes their attitude and if it doesn't then fuck 'em. Go find some new friends. Ones who aren't morons, preferably.

I understand why theist believe what they do.And anyone who is Godless frightens them, because we go against their way of thinking.Fear of death...a fear that we cease to go on in the afterlife is to much for some. You shouldn't put yourself in a place with people who can't see your side to.I'm not saying they have to side with you, just to understand that you are unlike them and accept you for that.

That sounds like fear.  People fear what they don't understand.  They fear the bible for crying out loud!

I wonder if they believe in the closet monster too... There are books mentioning closet monsters. Movies too...

Oh well... Religion is all about fear and hope. You give people something to fear and a hope of "salvation" and they will follow like a flock of mindless zombies.

That's true - one of the best worst movies of all time is entitled "Monster in the Closet".

I agree. I can't stand it when people see life in one of those two-way mirrors. All they see is their way (themselves). (flawed comparison, I know, but it's late/early...) But it can sometimes be very difficult to avoid those situations. I get annoyed and pissed, but then I get over it. Life goes on.

Bah, pitchforks are for reanimated corpses.  A good scythe, now that works for intimidation!

With the proper attire can cause quite a bit of anxiety in the biblical masses.. and many other bystanders as well.

Little tip, get better friends. That's probably one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. And do me a favor? Next time you talk t one of them and they claim that you're tempting them, tell them that they should be more grounded in their faith instead of blaming you for their unanswered question and doubts in what they seem to be so dedicated to.

I find it interesting that to root word for 'demon' actually means something like 'wise man'. Makes all the sense in the world...

I like the word demon  8)

Why is it your fault that they are not comfortable in their own faith and run like little girls when it's challenged ? Someone who is 100% beleiver wouldn't be intimidated by another person who thinks differently then them. If they can't stomach the fact that your an atheist then they are not as devout as they think they are. They're doubting their faith and just using you as a scapegoat for why their doubting.

This sort of reminds me of this one girl I know, she is very religious and quite nice for the most part but I always have to walk on eggshells with her. I am not allowed to curse (and by curse I mean words like "hell" "damn" "oh my god" "holy crap"...curse words that arn't really curse words) in her presence. Its a pain in the ass cuz I say these out of habit so its not like I can switch off that easily. I never understood how using "hell" and "damn" in a sentance affects her belief or relationship with this god fellow and it sometimes makes me wonder if she is really is the strong christian she claims to be ...

I know its not exactly the same as your situation but these irrational phobias theists have of rational discussions, petty curse words, what gender someone else has sex with etc. really make me wonder if any of them are really believers. It's almost like they don't really believe at all but instead spend their lives trying to convince themselves it's the truth.

I always thought that if god exists, then he can defend himself well enough without the need for followers like that...what sort of god would need believers having to stand up for it?

You know, in my home for the most part, anyone can put their feet up on the coffee table in the living room.  It's not a huge deal to me.  However I have a friend that doesn't like anyone putting their feet up on his coffee table.  I sometimes forget and do so unknowingly for a few moments.  The reason I take my foot off the table however is not to appease a stupid idea that somehow I'm hurting an inanimate piece of wood, but rather the respect I have for what my friend wants.  It's certainly not that he cannot afford a new coffee table or even have the damage repaired should I damage it.

I understand that and all but I rarley get the same respect in return from theists. It just gets frusterating when I am always the one to take the high road and censor myself. If I ever respectfully challenge it or casually drop a "damn" bomb in a sentance it's like the end of the world. it's annoying.

True. You never know what they're going to take offense over. ::) Sometimes something as silly as a religious joke will really piss people off. Or in others, drawing of a prophet will get you a death sentence.
