Title: Giant Jesus statue hit by lightning, burns down
Post by: curiosityandthecat on June 15, 2010, 12:15:45 PM
I must say, it did make me giggle a bit.

QuoteMONROE, OH (FOX19) - The large Jesus statue in Monroe was destroyed after being struck by lightning Monday evening.

The iconic statue was a landmark on Interstate 75, and was dubbed "King of Kings" by members of Solid Rock Church, where it resided.

The 62 feet tall statue weighing 16,000 pounds quickly became engulfed with flames. Fire crews were on the scene for several hours to put out the fire.

The statue, also nicknamed "Touchdown Jesus," is made out of wood and Styrofoam. The statue also had a steel frame anchored in concrete and fiberglass.

When they inevitably rebuild, they should do a sculpture of Jesus doing an end zone dance.  It's the natural progression.

Wait, two questions:
1. Why was this in the news?
2. Why did they build a giant Jesus in the first place?

Of course they are, it just so happens that the first anti-Christ U.S. President also happens to be the first non-white U.S. President. Why is it Obama and not Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan... etc. Or for that matter why were people saying it during the elections about Obama and not McCain?

Here's the M.O. of a lot of trolls: They post something and never actually defend what they said, but just keep posting seemingly random statements that aren't logically connected.

So far, you fit this. You want to defend your views or just keep trolling?

I say warn 'em all!

I worked today with this really religious girl and she started CRYING over this story. It's a fucking statue!!!!

If I remember correctly idolatry is a sin. It's like one of the first commandments. God is a jealous god, right?

All the money they spent on this thing they could have actually followed Jesus' teachings and given that money to help the poor.

It's one of those 'you really had to be here during the election to understand' things.  It was really bad in some places.  A great amount of people saying the 'half breed ni**er' was for sure the antichrist and was going to bring the world to it's end according to whatever, blah blah blah (sorry, I really don't like that 'n' word).  Racism during the elections was so blatant it was disgusting and most fanatical religious groups were touting the antichrist bit by misquoting a few scripts in revelations making it point to a well liked 'half breed'.  This idea spread like wildfire through the area I live in.

Do you think the next one they build will include a lightning conductor?
You have to wonder don't you!

Actually this statue had them too.  It was a very bad electrical storm and they believe they were basically overpowered.  Apparently the next one will simply be nonflammable, woopee! sigh.  BTW not sure if this was mentioned but the damn thing cost $250,000 with a portion of the work donated!  The thing was insured for $500,000!  Suck on that poor people!

You know in actuality the Church itself has declared that this was NOT an act of God. Sooo maybe the insurance company has grounds to not pay out ;)

If I were god, I would have struck that statue down on the grounds that it was ugly and cheap. As god, nothing would offend me more than ugly, cheap art depicting my relatives.

You know, I have to admit to giggling quite a bit when I first read about this. And I love the whole "'God' sending a message" thing. First time I read this the first thought in my head was,

"Really? God was sending a message? For someone so infallible he has really shitty aim."

Admittedly, this only made me laugh a little harder.

Not to add to the derail but they don't have anything on the Los Angeles Diocese and it's Our Lady of the Angels:

Quote from: "Wiki"Initially, the proposed budget was $150 million, but as the charities and donations kept coming, the architects and builders were able to implement everything desired. Thus, the final cost of the new cathedral was $189.7 million.

QuoteThe prices for some cathedral furnishings have also caused great consternation. $5M was budgeted for the altar or "table" -- essentially a giant slab of Rosso Laguna marble. The main bronze doors cost $3M. $2M was budgeted for the wooden ambo (lectern), and $1M for a very controversial tabernacle. $1M for the cathedra (bishop's chair). $250K for the presider's chair. $250K for each deacon's chair. Visiting bishops' chairs cost $150K each, while pews cost an average of $50K each. The cantor's stand cost $100K while each bronze chandelier/speaker cost $150K.[6]  The great costs incurred in its construction and Mahony's long efforts to get it built led critics to dub it the "Taj Mahony".[7]

They would have been very soggy marshmallows, but they would have tasted extra sweet.

Where is the receiver for the keyless entry on my 2005 grand prix? After taking my 05 grand prix (base model, no remote start) to the dealer to reprogram my keyless entry, I was told the receiver was bad. I would like to change it myself and was wondering where it was located.

I saw Tanks awe inspiring Cathedral thread.
I've seen a picture of the drowning Jesus statue.
All I can say is religious architecture isn't what it used to be.

Isn't it annoying when you have two forums open at the same time and get the tabs mixed up. :D
