The first step towards fixing a problem is realising that it is a problem. I've known for years that I'm an incurable procrastinator but don't seem to have come closer to finding ways to mitigate it. Deadlines loom and sometimes pass and I end up feeling frustrated with myself for staying up late to make up for days doing other things, and especially when I am unable to meet the deadline. Those are the worst.
I feel tired, and burnout scares me.
Things I've tried:
1) Less work. Since things I need to do for school have increased considerably, I've turned jobs away so that I focus and preserve my energy. However, since less work means less money I don't know how long I'll be able to keep that up.
2) Reward system. The idea is to externally motivate me to get things done in chunks. I finish a piece and I watch an episode (or binge-watch several :-[ ) of some show on Netflix or play some Mahjong or Bejewelled or something. This system is not working as well as I had hoped.
3) Taking perfectionism down a notch. While this may seem like a strength to some, to me it keeps me from even starting something for fear of it not turning out as I want it to. Like now. I have to rectify my research project and I just keep staring at the page until I find something else to do.
:Gaah:
It's like I only function under pressure. Having to turn something in the next day I stay up all night if I have to. Not having that added stress means nothing happens.
I don't know what to tell you. I have the same problem, letting things go that I need to get done. It always feels good to get something done early, or at all, but the positive motivation doesn't overcome the apathy.

Yes, exactly that! :(
I often want to procrastinate, I just never get around to it.

It's always an item on my 'To do' list.
I am terribly lazy and always hate it when I have to do certain things, like write reports. I cope by starting as long as possible before the deadline and then do the job in micro steps. That way I literally only work at it a few minutes every session, which could once a day with a far-off deadline. It's amazing how effortlessly an unpleasant task gets done this way. When I started my PhD project, I started writing up in the first week of the 3 years it took me. As time passed, I added a bit every few days, which also made it possible to revise continually. Most of the other PhD researchers were in a mad panic when they were writing up at the end of their projects, but for me it was a breeze.
If it's important post about it here and we'll nag you

That's a good tactic for getting things done. I think I may have to change the way I deal with these tasks that quickly become problems in a painless way, like you have done.

I slept all afternoon. So much for being productive. :headshake:
I've been dividing tasks into smaller chunks and setting more realistic goals according to available time and energy. So far it seems to be working. Let's see how long I can keep this up.
Oh boy, today is not going to be a productive day!
Even my 8-Ball says so.
How much time did you waste staring at it?

Long enough to get the answer I wanted.
Yeah, today wasn't productive at all, but I'm not feeling too frustrated over it. It's almost midnight so I'm off to bed, hopefully I'll be able to get some shuteye though I doubt it, too much caffeine circulating in my system.
:offtobed:
It's been quite a week, but a productive one at least. :whew:

Yeah, but it shouldn't have to be that way. :( When I was just a tween one of my ambitions in life was to be a highly organised and methodical grown up.
In fact, the fact that I'm
not was one of the leading causes of my quarter-life crisis, which really hit hard. ::)
I've been at the wrong end of a burnout... Did I talk about it here? I don't think I did.
In any case, what seems to do the trick in averting disaster, is switching to a completely different set of to-dos for a time. Of course, being able to do that depends on having a flexible enough and willing enough team around you, as it involves taking on some of their work in exchange for your own. Still, works wonders in slowing the perceived rhythm of the day right down to manageable levels, at least for me...

:notsure: That's like balancing on the edge of a sword for me. If I switch to doing something else for a while, I procrastinate more. If I don't, I also procrastinate.
Today was productive, but only because I didn't stay home. :P
Me, I simply cannot work from home these days. My Xbox starts serenading me from its hidey-hole, then I discover a certain peckishness and start making food, then I call it an early day... No, it's either going to the office, enforcing some self-discipline, or... Just throwing in the towel for that particular day :P

Since I've put off spring cleaning for months I am 'summer cleaning' now, starting with my computer files. Better late than never, right? :P
I have that problem currently with my "shop"- a portion of the garage that has nothing stored or piled in it. I have a project to build, but there is too much stuff in the way, and the dust bunnies need vacuuming up. Now I have a nasty cold, and taking benadryl. That makes me sleepy, and I'm not sure I should be using even a vacuum cleaner. Maybe tomorrow... :)

Heh, I don't know much about phones, but my mother told me the other day that when she tries to use her phone the screen kept freezing on her and she would constantly have to restart it. She asked me to help her remove some files she had downloaded from messenger apps in hopes of fixing the problem. I had a quick look and saw I don't know how many cleaning apps running at the same time (seriously, I think there were 5 or 6), taking up phone resources. I'll never get the two hours of 'cleaning' her phone and ridding it of those excessive apps back. ::)
Sigh, I love ya mom but you really need to learn the

Heh, I am certainly not the most qualified person to do that, just learning as I go along.
My mother is a proud person and doesn't ask for help unless she absolutely needs to, and even then... ::) I saw her fumbling with her cellphone, frustrated and angry. I asked her what was wrong and she said the cellphone
I had bought her sucks and she'll have to get a new one.
(I have the same phone model and specs and know it doesn't suck) ::)
'The screen's always freezing', she told me. I then explained to her that her phone, like most people, are not good at multitasking and if there are too many programs running at the same time it will consume resources and the screen will freeze. I uninstalled like 5 cleaning apps that were running at startup and added Avast Antivirus (which also 'cleans') so that she could remove all those junk files she likes to remove.
'You know', I told her as I uninstalled the apps. 'You don't actually
have to install every app suggestion that appears in your browser...'
She gives me the death glare in reply.
She hasn't complained about the phone since so I'm guessing that worked -- for now.

I use this free utility to mirror selected folders files automatically at 19:00 every day to a second hard drive in my PC. I've configured it to do incremental backups.

You can even set it to do the mirroring every few minutes for very important files. It's saved my life a few times.
I normally backup important files using Google Drive or Dropbox. I also send important files to my own inbox so I can find it easily later. Might not be the safest of options but so far it's worked.

I'll check it out. I back up to the cloud and to an external HDD. But right now my desktop and laptop are alike but still too different. There is no good reason for that, they could be the exact same workspace on two different machines. So that's what I'm going to do.
Plus, there are a lot of files (textures in particular), that I've collected over the years and have gone through many organization schemes and it really needs to be cleaned up.
It's flared up again. The propensity towards procrastination has spread from my brain to the rest of my body like wildfire, effectively keeping me very low energy and unwilling to do much.

It's a feedback loop of the first order. Depression leads procrastination which leads to depression. It can be a nasty downward spiral.
I don't know, but it makes sense. Procrastination can be a form of self-sabotage.
It really helps to listen to music I like to get "in the zone". Today I got a lot of work done.
I've been procrastinating again. The year has barely started and already I'm failing at keeping one of my resolutions. :(
There's always tomorrow.
Let's not rush to judgment. Perhaps postpone reevaluation for a later date.

I'm a great procrastinator myself. I've improved a little over the years but there are still a few things that I put off for no good reason. Over my vacation I fell back into my old ways and am now trying to get back to being efficiently productive.

It's not easy for me. I keep failing, but I'm slowly failing less and less.

That's why I set my alarm earlier than I need to get up...
Dammit, I'm procrastinating now. :(
So I've been noticing lately that there are a bunch of things I keep putting off to do after work and then forget about completely when I'm at home. I guess I should make a list of things I've put off...

I have a bunch of lists on my phone. I don't like timers/reminders because they're annoying, so I use them rarely. I'm great as making and organizing lists. I've gotten good at following through with some of those lists too. It's just that some things never make it to the top.
Clock's ticking and I can't get my act together. :( I have till the end of the month to turn in my thesis.
I found the cure for it, I don't know why I didn't try it myself. Took until someone told me.

Do the things you have to do, and be prepared to take the losses of things you can't do. Among the things you can do- what are the most important and do those. There's no need to worry about things you can't do if you can't change the circumstances as worrying won't change them. Handle the Things that can be done. Temporarily put aside things you won't need until the important things are taken care of. Whatever losses occur, you'll have to live with. Then you can return to having peace of mind.

It's getting bad. The crippling anxiety and frustration I feel has eclipsed any pleasurable feelings I gain from writing my thesis and any attempt at crafting each sentence feels hopelessly misguided. I get caught up in the minutia of technique, something I feel I have no competence in and what I get on the page are Frankenstein's Monster agglomerations of words and ideas. The entire text feels like an ugly, pieced-together monster that's going to suffer at the hands of the evaluators and make my life miserable.
I don't know what to do. :(

Put the core ideas as bullet points on one page.
Put them in order.
Flesh out each point.
Join them together.
^^^do that.
write out the outline of what you want to have, just the structure, whatever the standard format is.
then bullet point each section with one-sentence tag lines, put in the titles of tables and figures
take each section and bullet point it as well. each of these will be a paragraph.
write the paragraphs one at a time
put em together
sprinkle in whatever you forgot and left out.
^^^ this.
I suggest that you start with a single page of basic bullet points as this will force you to include the critical and leave out the crap. It also forces you to synthesise your own points/arguments down to a manageable number to allow you to gain focus that your supervisor can get their head around. A thesis is like a joke (no joke intended) with its conclusion as the 'punch-line'. You only put into a joke the necessary information to build to the punch-line. Only put into your thesis that which supports your conclusion.
Great tips! I'll give that strategy a try :)

The reason I asked was because you may find my way of coping useful: just work for an hour every day. That way you will not find it too arduous, and you will be surprised how easily an unpleasant task gets done. Some days you will even enjoy yourself and work for a few hours without noticing it.

I've gotten to a point where my garage "shop" is organized to where I don't have to move something in order to do some wood working. Not a matter of procrastination so much as having "too much stuff". My wife collects antiques. If she dies before I do, I'll have someone knowledgeable come in and estimate the value, and sell them. The rest will be donated, and then the remainder will be put in a giant dumpster. I'm looking at about 60 cubic yards of gained space. A lot of what my wife collects (hoards) would be gotten rid of. :smilenod:

I have two fret saws, two claw hammers, uncountable paint brushes and screwdrivers for the same reason. But the worst is paint scrapers, I have 7 paint scrappers FFS!
i once couldn't find my hacksaw. needed it, no way around it. looked all over the shop, finally said, shit, and went out and bought another one.
sawed whatever it was that needed sawing and said, all right, i'm sick of this. where can i put this hacksaw so that i will never lose it again? somep[lace in plain sight that i will see it often enough to klnow where it is, and ill never go through this goose chase again.
aha. i sadi, i'll put it on the nail on th eleft side of the door out of the hot room where i cant miss it and i will always know where it is.
so i took my hacksaw and went to the hot room and reached up to the nail . . .

sawed whatever it was that needed sawing and said, all right, i'm sick of this. where can i put this hacksaw so that i will never lose it again? somep[lace in plain sight that i will see it often enough to klnow where it is, and ill never go through this goose chase again.
aha. i sadi, i'll put it on the nail on th eleft side of the door out of the hot room where i cant miss it and i will always know where it is.
so i took my hacksaw and went to the hot room and reached up to the nail . . .
. . . and my old hacksaw was hanging on it.
I just knew where that was going LOL
you will never go wrong predicting that i will do stupid things.

I like it.

I love it
The eyes have it.
I don't like the face of many eyes, they look like pustules.
