Well, that's not a new low, I'm sure he can go even lower than that. When he starts to slither, well, that will be a new low.

Pence may be bad, but he would not win the election in 2020.  I'd rather deal with him for the next year than Trump.  But, again, Trump won't be convicted.  The fix is in.

billy rubin

somone asked pelosi a while back what the worst outcome of 2020 would be, or a question to that effct, and she paused and did not answer.

i don't know, but context suggested that she was considering if donald trump loses the 2020 presidential election, but then declares the election void because of cheating and refuses to leave office.

that would create a crisis that would make impeachment a birthday party.

I dunno.

Trump is kind of a joke but Pence seems creepy spooky and to add insult to injury genuinely religious.

The problem with Trump is that in action he has not been a joke. He has appointed Betsy DeVoes to the cabinet who is all about dismantling public education in favor of private education. He has appointed Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, a man who believes that the notion that there was intended to be a separation of church and state is "bad history". He and his administration have also taken many, many chances to target the rights of the LGBT community.

I don't know what in the world Trump really believes, but the Religious Right instantly took him in like he was the second coming of Christ. Thus, he has very much pandered to them. Oddly enough he never really speaks about religion and certainly has never come off as a figure who is actually religious. But the Religious Right doesn't need him to be actually religious. They need him to do their bidding and sneak enforcement of Christianity into the government, and he has done just that.

Pence is a dangerous figure, but I'm not any less afraid of Trump. A Pence presidency would, at the very least, be a lot less of a spectacle. While I think that might be a good thing, I also have my concerns about that. With my parents, for example, I think the main issue that gets them fired up against Trump (they would vote Democrat, either way, but hear me out) is that he is such an uncouth loudmouth. There's got to be a number of people out there that would like to go to the polls just to vote against Trump in hopes that Trump losing would end him being in the media 24/7.

Trump is a very obnoxious figure, and while that has emboldened his base of assholes, I do hope it works as a double-edged sword after seeing four entire years of it.

Honestly, hearing/seeing Trump and any of the Republican representatives that are gushing over him irritates the hell out of me.

With Pence, I'm afraid that since he likely wouldn't be a spectacle, this element wouldn't be able to hurt him.

I agree with everything you say but view it in a different context.  He very much appears to pander to any and every established, powerful religion whose adherents are white!  Listen to Trump work his listeners!

^ He does know how to pander to the Rubes.

The day before the impeachment hearings, my local Democrat club held a " please impeach him" rally.  The rubes or other unnamed entity posted a bomb threat.  My police department was on it like white on rice.  No bomb was discovered but the scare managed to disrupt an otherwise peaceful gathering of God save us from Trumpism.   There were a few trump sign carriers who managed to further disrupt the gathering.  They were all Ill clad, rude, confrontational, and unwelcome in an otherwise peaceful, thoughtful, pleasingly educated and sophisticated community.

No physical harm was done but the intimidation factor was real enough. I am much concerned about the ugly divisiveness in our previously congenial community, and the entire nation as well.

The chump exemplifies what a lot of the US is really like, sad to say. I don't expect much better anytime soon, though I'd at least like to see him gone. His particular brand of lunacy is wearing on the psyche- which is why I expect that he employs it.

Some somewhat similar characters from within living memory include George Wallace, Barry Goldwater, Lester Maddox, Strom Thurmond.  But how Trump managed to move into the White House at this particular juncture in history -- even as our demographics' skin grows daily ever so slightly browner, even as our actual, grassroots political views grow more egalitarian, even as our entrenched old tribal religions fade -- how this hater achieved the Presidency is still a mystery to me.

Well, I don't think it was a mystery why Trump was elected. I'd blame the Republicans for demonizing Obama and the Democrats for disconnecting themselves from the working class. Combine that with an unsympathetic presidential candidate who offended a huge part of the American population and the shit will hit the fan.

In addition, the offense that was felt by a significant part of the American population was the result of a long-term concerted effort on the part of right wing media to smear Clinton as a murderously evil harpy.

The self-described "magazine of evangelical conviction," Christianity Today, has published an editorial calling for the removal of President Trump.

"Trump Should Be Removed from Office" | Christianity Today

QuoteIn our founding documents, Billy Graham explains that Christianity Today will help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith. The impeachment of Donald Trump is a significant event in the story of our republic. It requires comment.

[. . .]

[T]he facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president's political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.

The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration. He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.

Trump's evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear, in a way the Mueller investigation did not, that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath. The impeachment hearings have illuminated the president's moral deficiencies for all to see. This damages the institution of the presidency, damages the reputation of our country, and damages both the spirit and the future of our people. None of the president's positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.

[Continues . . .]

I was not expecting this. However, I doubt that many evangelical Christians will allow it to change their minds in regard to their support for Trump.

I think it's for two reasons:

1. He energized the Republican base. Trump is like an amalgamation of everything that modern Republicans have ever wanted, but didn't want to say out loud because society had seemingly moved forward. Notice the Republican leaders rejected Trump at first, but now they're all at his knees.

2. The left and less conservative people in the US are divided horribly and are all playing the "If I can't get the candidate that I want, then no one gets anyone" game. This is what happened in the 2016 election. The voter turnout was low as a lot of the left didn't show up to vote. When something like that happens, the minority (Republicans) have their chance to win.

It's been a nightmare. I know that Hillary has lots of issues and certainly we should be striving for much better candidates, but to sit out the last election and let Trump of all people win? Jesus Christ. A lot of people on the left are happy to let the country burn because they can't get the purest of candidates in. Supreme Court seats were filled by horrible people who will hold us back for decades all because Hillary Clinton just wasn't pure enough to vote for.

Get your crap together, left. I don't much care for Biden - I agree that he's way too far to the right. I'd much prefer Warren or Sanders. But Biden or Buttigieg are still a much better choice than Trump. Like there's just no contest at all.

Ha, ha.

I'm sort of a white country bumpkin who voted Hillary 'cause she was, as a practical matter, the socially least worst candidate and most likely, in my judgment, not to panic and push The Button in a crisis at 3 AM.  The instant I heard Bernie Sanders respond to the Black Lives Matter movement by saying, "Black lives matter, white lives matter, Hispanic lives matter!" I decided he just did not get the basis of the movement.  He rolled out the milquetoast, politically safe answer before his advisers could sculpt a fancier reply.

But my very own blonde, blue-eyed sister of the radical left -- one-time Dead Head, now married to a coal-black Black man and now with several totally beautiful, lively, intelligent, brownish children -- my sister hates Hillary Clinton for a warmonger and was an adamant Bernie supporter.

So yeah, what you say may be exactly exemplified in my own family.  Yet I'm not sure how that's any different from back when Goldwater was running for prez.  My tentative hypothesis is that conservative corporate money has more deeply penetrated control over local election rules and regs than in the past?

QuoteTrump blasts evangelical magazine after blistering editorial calling for his removal from office

Brooke Singman

"...A far left magazine, or very 'progressive,' as some would call it, which has been doing poorly and hasn't been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years, Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President," Trump tweeted early Friday.

"No President has done more for the Evangelical community, and it's not even close. You'll not get anything from those Dems on stage. I won't be reading ET [sic] again!" he continued...

Yep.  God, Guns and Demagogues.  We've got dozens and dozens of guns out here in the woods, some inherited, some purchased, and I've never heard of anyone threatening to take them.

If the stock market suddenly took a dump or the great killer asteroid appeared in the heavens, these clowns would point the fickle finger of blame at the lefty liberal socialists.

The magazine editors pronouncement is a glimmer of hope.

I have been flabbergasted by the ironclad position of the Evangelicals.  Their guy has consistently violated six of their ten commandments. He has embraced the first four.  They are all about him.
