With what would Darwin have to agree?

with icarus

Ignorance may very well be the cause of many of their funerals.

i do stuff that people think is dangerous. but i take ordinary precautions. when i race ancient motorcycles, i wear full cowhide leathers, boots, gloves,  and a state of the art fibrglas helmet because i am not willfully ignorant of the risks. i use common sense. well, sort of.

willfully ignorant people will weed themselves out of the gene pool, to the extent that their willfullness is heritable, and constitutes a negative selection pressure. if they're all past breeding age, it won't matter. but stupidly ignorant people who fail to reproduce will do the whole gene pool a favor.

at this stage of the pandemic, to not understand the advantages of vaccination is a willful refusal to understand, not a lack of information.

I don't think COVID vaccination is going to make much difference to the rate of "stupidly ignorant people" reproducing, they do tend to be better at reproducing than more educated people.  Humans living past breeding age probably does benefit gene transmission.  Mothers and grandmothers (human/primate/other) assist with offspring.  Maybe even old blokes are of some use.  :-\

I'm not sure Darwin would agree, human society isn't really the evolutionary equivalent of a free market.

maybe not, in the short term. risk taking is messy. theressome work thats been done that shows that human emigration is associated with a specific set of alleles. now i cant find it. the meaning is that wanderers have something genetic in common that they dont share with stay at homers. is that risk taking gene adaptive? i think so, in that the genes havespread worldwide maybe covid deniers dont have it. but is it a cost?

it may just be intelligence. but as you say, maybeits swamped out by stupider people reproducing more.

If everything goes well, I should get my first jab somewhere in summer. Looking at how things are disorganised over here, my expectation is that October or November is more likely.

People are so fed up with the incompetence of the politicians, that the ruling political parties (CDU and SPD) will lose heavily in the next elections.

We are approaching one billion vaccinations worldwide. That would be very impressive if we hadn't needed about 10 billion. :(

It's not over yet, far from it.

The fact that I've had both Pfizer shots has made absolutely no difference to my pattern of behaviour when I go out.

Nor mine.  I have had both Moderna shots but I still practice masking and social distancing.  I do so as a common courtesy to other sane people, and partly for, hopefully, my own protection.

There are now no Covid restrictions in England. Cases are growing but hospitalisations and deaths are way down on what they were when there were similar numbers of cases before mass vaccinations.

But our government, as per usual, has fucked up. If you test positive people who have been in close contact with you have to isolate, whether or not they test positive. This has resulted in loads of people having to isolate and the food delivery system is collapsing! Oh joy! The solution is that double jabbed people don't have to isolate if they have been in close contact with an infected individual. But only in some key companies and organisations! SNAFU.

I claim that my Florida government is more fucked up than Tank's Brit government.  We are a very populous state, like 21 million, and we have a governor who has his nose up Trumps ass.  Result is that Florida is among the three states with the most serious Covid outbreaks.

I agree that we have a huge part of our citizenry who are dumb ass hillbillies who shun the vax.  In general we are a modern state with much to recommend. Somehow we are overwhelmed with willful stupidity, which includes our majority statehouse Republican politicians.

If it was not some damned cold there, I would move to Vermont, maybe  even become a Bernie sanders booster.( maybe not)

Texas and Missouri are running a close second to our Sunshine State stupidity.

Don’t worry, there are loads of countries that don’t have their Covid acts together. Here in Germany they’ve loosened up the lockdown a bit, because the general elections are coming up soon. The leading Christian Democratic (CDU) and Socialist Democratic (SPD) parties will nevertheless receive a beating, because they acted completely clueless, irresponsible and irrational. The CDU party was also involved in several Covid corruption scandals, so I hope that they’ll lose the elections. My hopes are up for the liberal party (FDP), because they seem to have more competent politicians.

June 2020, the population of New South Wales was over 8.1 million,[1] making it Australia's most populous state. Just under two-thirds of the state's population, 5.3 million, live in the Greater Sydney area.

NSW had been doing well, a diseased someone would occasionally slip out of the hotel quarantine system but contact trackers would be on to it.  The story was we had excellent trackers, we probably do.

The other states were crap, they'd shut down at the whiff of disease, we relied on our trackers and mocked.  The Aus prime minister fkn bastard agreed.

So Delta arrives, state premiere doesn't rush into lockdown, probably goaded by bastard prime minister.  All the proper experts say go fast, go hard, we didn't.
State premiere was saying "this is the scariest time"when there were a couple of cases but lingered.

Other states had a case or two, like we did but cracked down and now are pestilence free.

The Feds, the prime minister, hasn't done well acquiring vaccine, he doesn't like to dwell on that.  He's been converted from anti shut down to pro shutdown, probably to divert from his failure.

I think Greater Sydney is up to about 130 new cases a day, it will be interesting to see how it goes.  I'm a few hundred km north of Sydney, sharks are still more successful than Covid around here. I had my first Astra Z shot mid June, 2nd was booked for 12 weeks hence, end of August.  Maybe I'll try to get it sooner if things get interesting.
