Yes, to Fox folks, "Mexican" covers everything South of the Rio Grande.  I would like to visit the Southern tip of Mexico - Argentina - some day.

Nit picky retort..............

^^'Trump Cuts U.S. Aid To 3 Mexican Countries'

I was entirely unaware that there are three Mexican countries.  Do the Mexican citizens know about this oddity?
:notsure:
I don't think so.

just as a random point of interest, look up at that strait between the yucatan and the west end of cuba.

the tectonics of the caribbean are really complex, but that spot is a subduction zone.

many years ago i was on a seismic ship going through there from jamaica to texas. when we got there the bottom dropped off the fathometer paper. we turned the range up as far as it would go-- 12,000 feet-- and there was no bottom.

thats some pretty deep shit.

I have had an itch to visit that part of the world, Patagonia. Ain't gonna happen for me.

There is a fascinating video somewhere on You Tube, in which three adventurous guys ride their bicycles southward in that area.  The bicycles were specially equipped with a side car like third wheel. The bikes ran on railroad tracks for many many miles.

The level...depth? of ignorance in the US population about the rest of the world is appalling, in many disciplines. Politics, geography, medicine, science, take your pick. I just replied to a dork who went off about what a "socialist" Biden is, in another forum.  ::) He was complaining how "the left" has trashed the country in the last year. I explained a bit about politics and advised him to go find what socialism actually is, and how his Republican president caused the death of hundreds of thousands. It's a wood working forum and I have been a member for over a decade. Politics are strictly verboten, but there are times when that shit just can't be allowed. We'll see if I get bounced. Usually people just get spanked, as I haven't seen many bannings for politics. I've not been spanked before, so I'm not sure what will happen.

Ecurb Noselrub

Dumbass GOPers don't know what Socialism is. Biden is not for pubic ownership of the means of production.  Taxing the rich is not Socialism. It is justice and fairness.

 :this:

It is sad to observe that the kids in high school civics classes in 1948 (my senior year) knew more about government and politics than the millions of Trumper dumbfucks of today. .................Or is that only an old mans faulty recollection?

Dark Lightning

You're not wrong. I remember even the less intelligent kids having to take civics classes and learn current events. I graduated HS in '70. But I lived in a blue ribbon school district. Go to some of those southeastern states and they aren't required or expected to learn a lot. Example- one of my wife's cousins got a university degree in Radio, TV & Film, without taking a single math class- there was a philosophy class that satisfied the math requirement in those days. He later got a teaching credential and teaches math in Georgia, because, as he put it, "They don't really need a good math teacher in that state". I shit you not.  >:( It's completely infuriating to see a child's educational opportunities wasted with that sort of ignorance and/or unconcern.

Icarus

I was a volunteer math teacher for high school dropouts for several years. I can get on my soap box and be very loud when I say that it is a life essential to have a basic understanding of at least elementary math..........even in Georgia.

If you happen across your wife's cousin, please punch him in the mouth for me. ....Goddammit if you go to the bodega to buy a Swisher sweet to use with your doobie, it may cost 69 cents. The sales tax is 6%.  How much change from your one dollar bill should you expect to get?......... Never mind. No one uses money anymore.  It is all credit card transaction.  But how much does Mastercard or Visa charge you for the convenience?

Oops, it is raining and my soapbox is only cardboard.  I'd better get off it before it collapses.

Dark Lightning

You'll get absolutely no disagreement from me! Reading, writing and arithmetic- the "Three Rs" is actually indicative of education in the US, as reading is the only one that starts with an "r". I taught high school math and physics at a private school for two years, and only a handful of students wanted to be there and do the work. Pretty much like public schools, I expect. I had parents telling me how "disappointed" they were with me when their kids were failing at math. If their kid took out a writing stick and a piece of paper instead of looking out the window during class, I might have been a bit more understanding. Luckily for me there was a senior teacher sitting and observing my class when that shit was mentioned, and the kid got a serious ration of shit at home. He still failed the class. That school was a pretty dysfunctional place.

Hey Mags,

It's been some time, how is you?

So last week was Cinco de Mayo, and my wife (Socorro) as you know is from Honduras.

She works at a local specialized market, and deals directly with a lot of customers, many of whom she knows quite well.

Last week on 5/5 she was constantly getting told "Happy Cinco de Mayo" all day long by her customers. At first she tried to explain to them that she's not Mexican, and therefore doesn't celebrate this holiday, but after a while she just got tired of trying to explain everything, and so she just said, "Thanks", and moved on.

She said she got tired of explaining to them because even when she told people (By which I mean White People) that she was from Honduras, and that Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday which celebrates their victory over the French Army, and since she isn't from that country they couldn't grasp the meaning cuz aren't all Spanish speaking people Mexican?

She was quite annoyed, said it was a very long day, and next year she plans to take the day off so she doesn't have to deal with it.

Strangely enough on that same day as I was getting ready to leave the office someone here asked me if Socorro and I had big plans that evening.
I didn't understand what he meant, so I asked him, and he said, today is Cinco de Mayo, aren't you and her going to celebrate?
I explained to him why we don't celebrate a Mexican holiday since she is Honduran, and it went flying right over his head at high-speed!

He said, "yeah, but she speaks Spanish right"? Isn't it all the same"?

I replied, "you speak English, do you celebrate Canada Day"?

"No", he said, "but that's not the same thing".

I had to break this down in detail for him until he understood, well sort of understood (Honduran Independence is celebrated on September 15)

Any way Happy Las Piedras Day ((Paraguay). Anniversary of the end of the conflict between Uruguay and Brazil in 1828.

that is just weird

An unfortunate testament to the American grasp of history. Some of us have no concept of civics, geography, and several other forms of reality.

The French sorely underestimated the ability and the resolve of the "peasants". The Russians are presently enduring a similar revelation.

PB, please apologize to Socorro on my behalf. While I'm at It, I also apologize to Mags (same ballpark) for our collective ignorance and arrogance.
