Title: So, What Did Santa Bring You?
Post by: xSilverPhinx on December 26, 2019, 01:10:21 PM
I got a pair of shoes, some clothes, and an ergonomic mousepad ( :lol ). My brother offered to buy me a new laptop to go with the mousepad, but I thought it was a bit much and politely declined.

Thankfully no socks this time.

I tried Indian food a few years ago, but it was too hot for my taste. I think they got the order wrong, and brought me fooded spice and not spiced food.  ::)

 My two eldest sons and I like our food with spice, but the second oldest likes it really hot. When he goes for Indian food, they ask him if he wants it American hot, or Indian hot. He takes it Indian hot! I can't do that anymore. As a gift for this morning, I had to fiddle with the furnace to get it to light. Looks like I'll have to scrounge up a repair manual and find the problem before my house blows up or something. I may have to call a repair person. :(

BoT, I got to cook most of xmas dinner. Not much of a gift.

weve got two teenagers from africa in for the holidays. uganda and rwanda. got them stuff to keep them from being homesick, including a folding knife each. they were surprised at the knivez, and one didnt know how to open it. very strange.

in the meantime my numher one daughter is opening packages with a folding knife the size of a bayonet,  and the oldezt boy is out in the hayfield banging away with a 9mm he bought but cant shoot in town.

different cultures.

I remember this one time when I was about 16 I was cutting peppers for dinner and then without thinking I rubbed my eyes without thoroughly washing my hands first. After that experience I just don't seek out anything spicy anymore.

Yeah most likely. The dash cam is mostly for every day driving in case something were to happen to my car.

Man, I ate loads of buttered chapattis back in the day (had a maid/nanny who was from New Delhi when I was a kid). It's good, not spicy.  ;D

The memories. :tellmemore:

That's an excellent reason for having a dash cam.

One of the cool features this new one has is sensor that turns the camera on and records if someone hits my car while parked. Definitely worth it for that alone

Did you know in many cultures giving/receiving a knife is "bad luck"?  :shifty:

Call me crazy, but I don't know if a knife is what I would want if I came from a place where 1 million were killed by machete, club and gun...I'm just saying.

well, these were tool-type knives, not weapon-type knives. i'm so used to knives with my own kids i don't even think bout it. i taught them how to do a rudimentary temper on mild steel with a torch and motor oil when they were little and they've been making their own edged tools ever since. my house is littered with home-made knives, axes, short swords, hatchets, tomahawks, machetes, and so on. good thing i didn't teach them how to cast a cannon, i guess.

I got a real nice parka coat with matching gloves. I love them and I wish it were cold enough to get to wear them.

I also got the Hallmark 2019 Generation I MLP Seashell ornament.

All of these gifts I got weeks ago, so there was nothing to open on Christmas itself.

Is this a Sam Vimes quote from a Pratchett book, or from personal experience? I know from personal experience that a vast array of innocent items are actually useful as implements of mayhem or destruction. But then I weighed 137 pounds and was 5'-7" when I graduated high school. I gruesome after that, though.

I completely understand what you're saying. I grew up with a machete in my hand. I would have "clean fun" with it. Opening coconuts with it, cutting and peeling sugarcanes with it, cutting branches, etc. Back in 1978, I witnessed a machete fight between a drunk man and a police officer.

I have a machete in the tool shed.  It is useful sometimes when whacking away at overgrown foliage.  The other big knife that I have is a cane knife.  It has a very broad and thin blade, about as long as the machete, It has a hook at the top of the end of the blade.   The one I have was made in Dominican Republic.  The quality of the blade is impressive.  It can be sharpened well enough to shave with. When struck it rings like a bell. No I do not use it for shaving.

my number two son just brought this in. the oldest boy gave him a blade blank, and he took some leather i had bought for a motorcycle seat and made a disc handle and sheath. cut the leather with his ordinary pocket knfe and shaped the handle on the bench grinder.

pretty nice work, much nice than the stainless blade from india deserves.
