"I'm very aware that people try to get their hands on children and indoctrinate them and I want to open their eyes, open their minds, show them the thrill of science — of really understanding so much of why we exist, why the universe exists, what life is."
Interesting read and may well be worth picking up when my little fella is a bit older. I was always given illustrated bibles and the like when I was a kid, it'd be nice to have an alternative :)
Well growing up a roman catholic and getting my confirmation all of my youth I've been given l sorts of bibles and religious books its good to know that here are books I can give my child so he can know facts. Plus I love Richard dawkins work
That book should be in the teenage section.
Kdis should not be exposed to atheist ideas at such a tender age.

What? They shouldn't be told the truth about the myths of our understandably ignorant ancestors. But it's ok to tell them the world is run by a genocidal maniac who fooled his pets into cursing all their descendants for eternity because they listened to a talking snake?

Can't work out if that is misogyny or misanthropy. :headscratch:
Later: oops, I meant "misandry"!
Could we at least limit the amount of 5+ year old threads that are getting resurrected?

Also the large number of threads engaged, new or old. Sort of like stuffing a site in a "denial of service" attack.

It has yet to be demonstrated that this poster can keep track of things. It has failed to have a civil discussion, so we can't tell if it is keeping things straight or not. It's posting "controversial" things that seem intended to rile us all up. It has yet to actually discuss anything it has said.
Her participation in discussion has been disjointed, truncated, and littered with lame comments about atheists, but not completely lacking.

I wonder what the right sort of dog would be? A quiet one certainly. I think not too large either, so that it won't knock too many things over, or cause the Sister to break her vow of poverty with big bags of dog food.

How come he/she gets suspended for this and not for pretending to be a celibate catholic nun for 3 mos straight?
SA could have been a comedy catholic nun and been a damn good laugh. It's not the persona that is the issue but the results of the use of that persona. If they try to deliberately troll other members that's the rule they are breaking. The rules are there to protect the members from abuse. Creating a false persona is not necessarily abusive. And to be honest my troll sense exploded on the first post from SA. It sort of perked up when you arrived and is now dozing with one eye slightly open :D
Trolls are fun for a little while, but not as a steady diet. Most of them do not, in the beginning, realize that they are matching wits with people who have faculties that may well be superior to their own.
The puzzling part of the troll culture is that they appear to enjoy invading a den of hammers while they are nails. Masochists .................?

Dawkins should write a book called "Christmas bedtime stories for children of all ages". In one chapter he could call "where do little children go when they die" and he could write about the decomposition process in detail, and how you don't really "go anywhere" when you die, and you're just wiped into nonexistence and eternal unconsciousness because you no longer exist. I just think that would be hilarious. Would it help the children go to sleep or have them up all night worrying?

I used to moderate on the Richard Dawkins forum. I have to say I am not a fan of the guy. He's very much a product of his privileged colonial upbringing. I had to email him about something. He replied but he didn't respond to my question. He replied to correct how I had used an apostrophe in his name. He's not a particularly good philosopher either but The God Delusion changed me from a passive atheist to an active one. I had not really understood the impact creationists like Ken Hamm in the USA. That said what he has done is raised the profile of atheistic thought and just how insidious theism is in the human world. So like all of us he's not perfect but through his work on evolution he has advanced the sum total of human knowledge.

Dawkins is not my most favourite person either, he plays the celebrity tune too often but, yes, one has to recognise and respect his achievments. Perhaps in the way that I feel a few senior churchmen deserve respect for their, slightly, more enlightened attitude towards gay marriage etc.

Have you read his book for children? I suspect not. Equally, I suspect that what you know about Dawkins largely comes from anti-atheist propaganda. As you see above, he isn't held in any particular reverence by atheists in general. In fact there are many atheists who've come to actively dislike the man. It looks a bit like wishful thinking that you believe that you "upset" anybody here by attempting to poke fun at him.

Yup, atheists score because they are allowed, often encouraged, to question and think critically about "authority". Not expected to simply accecpt because some guy 4000 odd years ago started writing some "rules" down in a book, justifying them with takes of fantasy, to maintain his group's hold on power. An idea plagiarised about 2000 years ago by another bunch.
Fantasy is great, I read large volumes of it. It can be inventive, allegorical, indicative of human psychology, can make you think or merely entertain etc etc, but when the book is shut that world goes on hold and the real one takes over again. As Grannie Weatherwax said in one of the Discworld novels, "It's all headology...
If you are going to write a book on ethics, morals, psilodophy, psychology etc using fables, allegory and parables at least be honest enough to admit to it.
Well I have not read it. And I've never read anti-atheist material. And from what I understand, Dawkins is rather the posterboy for the modern atheist movement, or at least was at one time--I don't keep up with popular fads

The God Delusion was a book written about the right subject at the right time. There were 4 main anti-theist authors around at the time. Daniel Dennett (the one I wish I could be), Christopher Hitchens (the one I channel on Facebook), Sam Harris (ambivalent about him) and RD, I've expressed my opinion about him.

I was a bit confused about where to put the apostrophe when writing Dawkins in possessive form. is it dawkin's or dawkins' or dawkins's? hmm
Send him an email. If you don't get a reply you know you used the right one.
