Is there by any chance an option in the settings I'm unaware of that will provide me with a noticeable alert for when I have new private message? I'm not too good about recognizing that little number....

There should be an email notification setting...
It should be set by default to notify you with a pop up when you have a new pm. However, if you have that setting switched to no or have pop ups blocked it won't be very helpful.
