Title: What are you drinking now?
Post by: Ecurb Noselrub on December 25, 2020, 03:15:50 PM
Hot Chocohol.  I made it up: Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur and Sweet Lucy Cream Liqueur, about a 3 to 1 mix respectively, with a mini-marshmallow, served hot. Gave it to the guys at the gym this morning (I was dressed as Santa and led a singing with my guitar), and it was a hit.

I'm enjoying a Franziskaner Weissbier at this moment.

Cheap Canadian blend called Canadian Club.  Pretty fair booze for the price.  Far better that rotgut stuff that often costs more.

My supermarket chain has liquor stores separate from their grocery stores.  Publix has more than a thousand stores in the southeast.   My cheap booze is often put on sale for $16.99 for a 1.75 liter bottle.  The deal is to buy two and get a six dollar discount.  Thus making the perfectly consumable hooch $13.99 per 1.75 liter.    When not on sale it is priced at $19.99.

Once in a blue moon, I will splurge for a bottle of good quality scotch.  There is a lot to argue about when deciding just which "good" scotch is superior to another one.  For damned sure the most expensive ones are not necessarily the best of them. Subjective judgements and taste preferences are in play.

My somewhat prosperous daughter, who lives far away, is inclined to spoil me with gifts of expensive liquor.  I appreciate her extravagant gifts but most of the time fail to enjoy the up scale stuff in proportion to the difference in price of my gifts or the ordinary stuff that I ordinarily consume.

Too true! I was on travel back in the early 2000s and bought a bottle of Bowmore scotch, before I knew what an Islay scotch was. Yeesh. I left it in the motel, but I'll bet that the cleaning staff had to empty it out, down the drain. I'm careful to look for "peaty" in the description when buying scotch, though I haven't bought any in quite a while. I've cut back on alcohol both for reflux and the need to take pain meds for my foot problems. I did buy a 6 pack of Bass ale the other day, one bottle of which I am currently drinking. I've also had a snort of Wild Turkey 101 proof. Man, that stuff is good! But I can't indulge too much, or I will suffer later.

Wild Turkey and Bowmore are indeed very potent stuff. In the eightees, Bowmore was even salty of taste. It took some glasses to get used to.

Ha, ye...
Here we are taxed on the stuff the judgmental say we shouldn't be doing.
I don't  mind when it's tobacco, 'cause I don't do it and they shouldn't be.
The standard measure, a slab of beer 24 x 375ml, there's $15 tax on 'em.
With tax applied you can get a cheap slab for $30-32ish.
If you think yourself not of the riff raff you'll spend $50
Wine has been spared tax 'cause it's what Jesus drank
Not really the reason? the vinters have something going
You can get 4 litres of wine for A$11 US$8.25
Your perfectly consumable hooch $13.99 per 1.75 liter
It would probably be A$70, divide by 100 x 75 US$52.50

I'm drinking beer I made, it's OK, nice, I wouldn't spruik it.

Somehow I do not care for coffee.  Does that make me Un American of something?    Instead I have a taste for tea.  My current favorites are Twinings English Breakfast.   That is a morning and mid day beverage.   Friend wife favors Tazo brand teas which I find....Blaaaah.

In spite of the stereotype of sailor drinking coffee, I drank perhaps 5 cups when I was in the Navy. It wasn't until my second year of uni that I picked up the habit. FORTRAN programming at 7 AM.

Made some vin de noix (https://www.cooksinfo.com/vin-de-noix) this year. The recipe I use is not the one given there--I'm not sure where I got that, since I last made it four years ago. It's a pleasant aperitif, similar to port but with a slight astringency.

FORmula TRANslation. Primarily number-crunching code. I wrote mostly electromagnetic propagation and scattering programs. I don't dream in FORTRAN, and haven't written any code in over 20 years.

Strangely enough, I like the VS more. Have you tried Hennessy VS? I like it better than Courvoisier. Just a different set of taste buds, to be sure. I'm currently imbibing some Budweiser in a bottle. Yeah, I'm a Philistine.

I don't remember when I started drinking coffee heavily. It was definitely due to computer programming although I was fortunate not to have to use FORTRAN. I knew how but no company I worked for used it.

Hmm...alien machines. My first desktop looked pretty much like a modern PC, except for the floppy disk drive and huge monitor. :P I think it was a Pentium III, and had about 124 mb of RAM. ::) I had a DVD-Rom installed, and machine didn't even have enough memory to watch a DVD without it stuttering all the time. ::)

Those were the days. ::)

Wow--fancy.

I'm drinking Bell's Light Hearted Ale, a decent low-cal approximation of Bell's regular IPA. In the mornings I've been drinking egg nog in my coffee, which I usually have black. I so love egg nog.

My Day Off

teh wife works nights and is still asleep at noon.

i started with coffee, graduated to a bottle of 12 dogs of christmas ale my daughter's bioyfriend gave me.

he's a really nice kid, but he's studying to be an accountant.

this is mystifying to me. i don't understand how someone could want to be an accountant. not that there's anything wrong, but my mind just doesn't comprehend that type of thinking.

not his limitation, buut rathermine.

anyway, i have some crown royal now that looks lonely

Copper Run small batch whiskey in our rented cabin near Branson, MO. A blended whiskey, sweet & smooth, fitting for the beautiful Ozarks.  Regarding the question of cognacs, I'm a VSOP over VS man.  I like Courvoisier, Remy Martin, Hennessy, and all the rest if it's VSOP.  The only XO I've found to my taste is Camus.

My father was a manager at a fast food restaurant and well loved by his employees. He came home one Christmas eve with boxes upon boxes of Budweiser. I had to help him get them out of the trunk. We opened one each and said "Merry Christmas!" Ah the good old days.

I was never a big fan of Budweiser but free beer is free beer so I'll take it.

I've been a consumer of Sam Adams Boston Lager for a long time. Sometime in the last few months, I lost my taste for it and switched to Bud. I don't drink all that much of it. For example, I didn't drink any alcohol for about 10 days in the last month. Just one of those things?

My wife's tipping up a cocktail glass with Tia Maria coffee liqueur in it. I won't indulge in that because of potential caffeine issues. She says that it's really sweet, which is another reason for me to avoid it. I'm sipping on a nice cold beer. We'll both be in bed by 9 PM. We're real party animals!  :yes!: :cheerleader:

It depends on the time... :notsure: Wine, right now...
A beer with the fish tacos...
Champagne at midnight to celebrate...

Alka Seltzer® in the morning...

But very happy to have been part of this group one more year, and I hope, more years to come.

I've always been an early riser, so to bed early (by parental edict). My wife and I both don't stay up late. It took me 6.5 years to get a 4 year degree, because I worked for a living, even though I had the GI Bill. When I graduated uni and got an engineering job, I had weekends free. Kind of weird, because in my uni years, I was at school, at work, or asleep. I managed to somehow find my wife in the middle of that (I spotted her in our Modern Physics class, and swooped in for the kill. There were 4 woman physics majors, and she had the goods!- one was married, and the other two were...kinda crazy). I went from the Dean's list but had a 2.0 GPA that semester.  :???: I also had a '64 Chevrolet convertible hot rod that got 12 MPG. It was cheaper to marry her than drive all the miles back and forth to her place!

So far, one St. Arnold's Christmas Ale for lunch, with plans to finish off the champagne this afternoon, watch some football (handegg, for the Brits), and then sip on the Copper Run blended whiskey I brought in Missouri later.  Good start to the New Year.  And my wife is cooking cornbread to go with our black-eyed peas, flavored with bacon, for later.

Southerners are obliged to have Black eyed peas and rice ( called HoppinJohn by some) on New Years day.  Failure to serve that repast will cause bad luck and invading Yankee snow birds for the entire year. Additional  insurance involves cornbread which is  good vittles.

It's strange. I've moved all over the place including overseas while I was a child. My parents were southern so if it weren't for them I wouldn't have ever indulged in such a banquet. And it wasn't just for New Year's either although it was served then. We'd have it many times throughout the year. I can still picture the ladle with the black eyed peas pouring over the cornbread I just broke open. Neither of my wives cooked like that.

I guess rage can't be considered a "drink", but I will say that I did have a wee dram of Old #7 to help me calm down! I see where that stupid asshole who got to Nancy Pelosi's desk and propped his feet up and then stole some things said, "I was just there, and the crowd shoved me forward!". It is absolutely amazing how these pinheads allowed cameras to video all their crimes. Apologies to pinheads, worldwide. :smilenod: Biden talked about what it would have been like if those people had been persons of color. The thing was known for weeks. OK, off the soap box.

i cant drink gin anymore, not even th every dry stuff. something about the taste no longer agrees with my biochemistry.

but the mezcal is still great stuff, and ive got some now.

id be interested in trying something other than the garden variety monte alban, but appalachia isn't really good mezcal country.

All gin smells like cat piss to me, and I don't care for tequila. I bought my wife a bottle Of Milagro in a blown glass bottle many years ago, because she likes tequila. That actually wasn't all that bad, but it wouldn't be a habit, with me.

It's in the bottle because people drinking that piss far enough down the bottle are going to be challenged to eat the damned thing to prove how macho (or drunk) they are. It's just like wine. I was at a party once where someone had a bottle of wine that had berries formed into it. Damfino what brand. It was offered to me, and I declined. Someone started to drink it, and a cheer went up to "drink it to the berries!", with assurance that the observers would tell the poor sap when he'd reached the berries.  :???: I left about that time, and learned on Monday that two of the partiers had been seriously injured in a motorcycle crash, which involved the driver of the motorcycle...who was drinking at that party.

Drinking less than I was a few weeks ago.  I have never really abused the John Barleycorn elixer but I had been using more than necessary.  I never ever drink if I am going out in the evening. With the virus threat I do not go out at all except in the rarest of events.  There is the booze component of entertainment as a result....or excuse.

Embarrassing confession: It all started one night when I was at the computer. I was not at all impaired but I was sleepy. Drowsiness almost surely caused by the alcohol.  Evidently I fell asleep at the keyboard. Then I fell off the damned chair and skinned up one of my arms pretty badly. Blood!  That was a "what the hell happened" moment.  So, now I have been imbibing far more moderately.  An aside benefit of doing so is that I will spend less frequently at the liquor store.

Fatherly advice for my esteemed HAF friends.....enjoy but do not over do it.

I've "over-served"  ::) myself in the past, :D on a few occasions. These days all it takes is being tired, which I feel a lot. I started taking B-12 in some megadose thinking that it would help with my energy, but it ended up causing insomnia. I stopped taking it a few days ago, and caught up with my "sleep deprivation" by nodding off in front of my laptop. Luckily, I didn't fall over. I cut the gummies in quarters to see if I could get the benefit at a lower dosage.

BoT, I'm sipping on a Budweiser atm.

Mezcal tastes like burned jet fuel to me.  I never got it.  It was like an agave plant applied to Tequila University and flunked out in the first semester.  However, once in a moment of revelatory brilliance I did mix a little with some Scotch and it wasn't half bad.  Both are smoky - reminded me of the Candelilla wax burning pits in the deserts of northern Mexico that I visited many years ago.  Don't ask me why I was there.

could be genetic.

i used to sell blue gum eucalyptus honey at a farmer's market. to me it tasted like ordinary amber to dark amber honey, distinctive but not very different.

but to some people-- maybe one in twenty, the stuff tasted so bad thatthey would spit it out or walk around in circles waving their arms. i would ask what it tested like, and they would usually say

burnt, bitter, awful!! or something like that

i was fascinated to see who would and would not have the reaction, and i would warn people in advance

once i had a mother and her daughter walking in circles gagging while the husband just looked at them and laughed. he had no reaction at all.

It was in the 80's.  Not now. Candelilla plants create a natural wax that ranchers and others in the US used.  It grew in north Mexico and was processed there. Some villages survived on it.

It is good and the nice thing about it is that it doesn't leave an aftertaste for me. Most food and drink leaves a bad one and I usually either chew a piece of gum or brush my teeth to get rid of it.

In honor of the new White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, I have created the Gin Sake.  It is 2 parts Bombay Sapphire Gin, 1 part Gekkeikan Sake, a couple of teaspoons of Luxardo cherry syrup (in honor of her beautiful red hair) and one Luxardo cherry from the same jar (in honor of, well, you know).  The Sake is a bit like Vermouth, so it needs less than the Gin.  Shaken with ice and poured into a Martini glass.  It is essentially a Martini, but I think Jen Psaki would approve.  I don't know why I think this, but I do.

Today I am also reviewing my French Wine du jour. It is a Cotes du Rhone from E. Guigal. It was quite pleasing to the palate, and had no bitter aftertaste. I am becoming a fan of French wine.

Mr. Uppity here.  From now on "EN" stands for "Elitist Nose" instead of Ecurb Noselrub.  This evening I am reviewing a 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape by E. Guigal. This is a Rhone Valley wine from Southeast France.  It has a garnet red color and 15% ABV. There is nothing especially remarkable about the aroma, but the taste is quite pleasant. It has a medium body, and a slightly metallic or citrus note that is surprisingly good. There are darker red fruits in the mix, as well. It does have a bit of a tannic finish. On the Burleson Wine Scale (1-10) it merits a 7. It cost $25.00, so 7 means you get about your money's worth, but no more.

I don't buy anything unless it comes in a jug marked XXX. :)

Are there adult video CD's taped to it?

finished my last guinness

now its no alcohol for billy until i lose about 20 pounds

race dates for the land speed machine in july and august have just been published, and i need to lose a minimum of 16 pounds to fit into my leathers.  more is better

so i'm back to eating meat again. no carbs-- no bread, no rice, no sugar, no pasta, no grains, no potatoes, no fruits, no root vegetables, nothing that has non dietary carbohydrates in it. lots of dark greens, unlimited eggs (eggs are free), hard cheeses, nuts, and lower fat meats. its not really a hardship because i don't like most carbs anyway. but i gain weight in early winter because i drink like a fish

and less of everything. when my trousers start to fall off my hips again i'll be getting close

I don't actually drink a lot of alcohol. None to twice and week, a beer, a whiskey or glass of wine. I've actually told my family not to buy me beer or spirits for birthdays or Christmas as I have some bottles of spirits over two years old.

This evening the selection is another Chateauneuf du Pape (New chateau of the Pope) Rhone Valley red wine - a 2016 Bosquet des Papes (Popes' Grove) from Earl Boiron.  It has a deep red color and an ABV of 15%.  That's the last good thing I'll say about it.  I spent $45 for this bottle, expecting something in return.  I got nothing.  It is way too tannic for my palate. You can smell the harshness.  I'll give it a 4 just for the ABV.  I won't have to drink much of it to get a bit of a buzz.  Do not buy this wine (you probably weren't going to do that, anyway).

Beer. But I have to cut back/quit because of my esophagus-to-stomach valve (hiatal sphincter?) leaking after a lifetime of shithead management-induced stress. I don't enjoy a buzz that much, (and nobody needs to tell me to smoke anything). That leads to an even shorter lifespan, in my family.

Here is an article that explores wine chemistry.  It is revealing and perhaps a useful guide to knowing what is in a nice wine or rot gut wine as the case may be.

Way back in the day I had a favorite wine that was made in Yugoslavia.  It was modestly priced ( cheap) and was  most satisfying.  Yugoslavia?  Yep. It was really nice wine for about seven dollars.

Billy, your post about your all-meat diet reminded me of my kitty-corner backyard neighbors growing up. Whenever the dad wanted to lose weight, he'd eat only steak and bacon and nothing else. He had great success. Sounded delicious but a little monotonous. I refuse to give up bread. Or beer. Quality of life and all. You'll pry my IPA from my cold dead hands.

I'm currently drinking a shitty low-cal "IPA" Dogfish Head makes. Pretty bad. The only good low-cal  pale ales or IPAs I've had are Good Behavior from O'Dell and Bell's Light Hearted and some stuff whose name I've forgotten when we visited England.

in my case if i cut carbz out of my diet and also just reduce calriez in general, i can lose 2 to 3 pounds per week, continuously.

im not a meat fan so a steak and bacon diet would drive me nuts. ive eaten one steak in the last 30 years that i can remember and it was not a pleasant meal for me.

This afternoon we will review a 2017 Beaujolais-Villages from Louis Jadot.  I am familiar with this wine so I knew I would be fine with it. I needed a sure bet after the last review's debacle. I'm still recovering from that trauma. Beaujolais is a region of Bourgogne (Burgundy), a bit north of Lyon.  The wine is 100% Gamay grape. It is light, fruity, low in tannins, and pairs well with mild cheese.  I had some with a simple Farmer's Cheese and it was perfectly acceptable. There is a hint of spice, which makes it slightly saucy.  My dad first introduced me to Beaujolais when he treated my wife and I to dinner at Antoine's in New Orleans in the early 80's. It's not pretentious at all - just sip and enjoy.  6 on the EN scale, which is better than average.

Enough work - time for a French Wine Review.  Today it is a 2011 Bordeaux from Chateau du Haut-Queray.  Bordeaux is in Southwest France. I was pleased with this wine. It is a deep, dark red with some notes of cassis (black current), and while it is full-bodied, it is also quite smooth and velvety.  It has no harsh tannic aftertaste.  I paired it with some Manchego and was happy with the result. It gets an 8.

Nothing...as this past December I celebrated 7 years sober.  8) Yeah!!!

Since I been working from home the last 11 months I've been drinking an incredible amount of coffee...I mean like "Lots"!

I also drink a lot of tea, but my coffee consumption has been crazy....so much so that back in January I put myself on a somewhat strict regime to try and wean me off the stuff some.

The main problem is that we have one of those Kuerig machines, and it just makes it so damn easy to get a fresh, hot coffee...just replace the pod and push a button.

I mean I can do that all day!

Anyway most day's I don't allow myself coffee after 1230 or 1500, which ever comes first, and so I'm drinking more tea, both caffeinated and decaf.

Plus water, lots of water.

...oh and kombucha, me likes kombucha.  8)

This will be my last review of French wines.  I've had some requests, but I'm going to write it, anyway.

Today's offering is a 2016 Brouilly (pronounced sort of "brew-yee") from Hospices de Belleville, and bottled by Joseph Drouhin.  Brouilly is part of the Beaujolais region, and this wine features Gamay grapes from volcanic soil.  It is a lighter bodied red wine with 13% ABV.  It has hints of strawberry in the nose, and is smoothly drinkable. It has a touch more tannins than the Bordeaux from last week, but not overpowering. It would pair well with lighter cheeses and perhaps pork or lamb dishes.  It gets a 6.5 on the EN scale.

Since I live under an implied threat from Magdalena, I will continue my French wine review until she releases me. I'm afraid she will sacrifice me to some Central American volcano goddess or worse.

On this fine, chilly Sunday afternoon, I am sampling a 2018 Bordeaux from Chateau Saint-Sulpice.  It is made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Malbec grapes. This wine has a dark purple color, medium body, and is 14.2% ABV.  I've decided that Bordeaux wines are my favorite.  I remember liking them when I lived in France for 9 months in the mid-70s, and now that my palate has matured I like them even more. Light on tannins, it is smooth and quite drinkable. There is a hint of cassis and spice that gives the drinker a pleasant experience. It would pair well with sharper cheeses and beef.  It merits an 8, and is not too expensive, so it's a bargain in my book.

I've had good and bad of both US and French, and it all comes down to subjective taste.  If you like it, that's all that matters.  But very generally, I would say that the French reds are generally more drinkable and smooth, but if you want a really full bodied wine an American Cab is going to be at the top of my list.  I generally only drink reds, so if you are a white wine fan this won't apply.  But the best Cabs (the ones I want with a good steak) are American.

Italian reds rely too much on the Sangiovese grape (as in Chianti) and are too harsh for me.  Some good American Cabs are Frances Coppola in CA and (one of my favs) Becker Vineyards  from Texas. Federalist is also good.

Aujourd'hui, nous dégusterons un vin Malbec.  I have chosen a 2018 Solis Malbec, a Cahors wine from Cosse et Maisonneuve.  Cahors is an area in southwestern France.  This wine has a deep red color and 14.5% ABC.  There are notes of black cherry and spice, but a bit too much tannin for me in the aftertaste.  I really don't like the puckered feeling at the end of some wines, and this one is right on the edge of how much I will accept.  Nevertheless, the taste is good, so I'm giving it a 7.  Bonne journée!

2018 Mouton Cadet from Baron Philippe de Rothschild.  This one is ubiquitous in wine stores, and is probably mass produced. I hate to think that anyone gets their only impression of a Bordeaux from this.  It does not measure up to the better ones.  It has 14.5% ABV but is harsh on the tongue (at least to my sensitive palate).  It would be OK for the 3rd glass at a meal, but not to drink by itself.  I'll be generous and give it a 5 - pure average.

Next week I'm graduating to some more serious bacchanalian elixirs.  I need to make a run to a serious establishment to branch out a bit.  Of course, that means spending more money.  Stay tuned!

Stay tuned!
OK

When it comes to reds, I like the dry country reds, particularly Shiraz, from areas like Rutherglen in northern Victoria.  Big and bold, fruity but not sweet with an explosion of flavour on the palate.  I especially like the wines from small family run vineyards where you can talk to the actual winemaker.

The region, where I live is known for their excellent white wines, especially Rieslings. One of my favourite vineyards is Kloster Eberbach (https://kloster-eberbach.de/en/vineyard/). They have wonderful wines, including an amazingly good tasting alcohol-free one.

St. Michelle Riesling was one of my favorites. If it was on the wine list I'd order it.

Good communion wines. I'm focusing on French wines, and the French have largely rejected Catholicism and communion. I was raised in a Baptist church and we used grape juice.  I gave it the name "Blood Light".  Manischevitz is better.

I've fallen down on the job.  Circumstances of life have prevented me from doing any French wine reviews for the past week or so, but never fear - Ecurb is here.  Today, the featured wine is a 2016 Chateau Laplagnotte-Bellevue, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Bordeaux.   Check out their website (it's in French).  http://www.laplagnotte.com/

Cru is "a vineyard or group of vineyards, especially one of recognized quality", meaning this wine is not made from grapes of several regions or even farms.  It claims to be made with organic grapes, and, in fact, it has a deep grape color.  A medium bodied wine, I detected notes of black cherry (a sweet impression on first taste).  It has about medium tannins, but is still smooth enough for me. At 14% ABV, it is not overpowering, and would go well with pork or beef.  I have previously said that I like Bordeaux, and this is no exception.  I give it an 8.  It cost me $33.00, so it was worth it.

the only variety around here is monte alban

not much opportunityto experiment.

perhaps theres a genetic thing in there it tastes very good to me. pretty dry. sweet tastes drive me away, so bourbons and such are anathema to me

Inspired by Bruce's review of French wines I will review what I am currently drinking as well.

Filtered tap water.

This almost transparent liquid is so cheap it's almost free, which is makes it perfect for drinking at little cost. A word of caution though, drink in moderation so as not to upset the balance. If you must binge drink water, make sure to sweat and urinate plenty in advance and plenty after. But not too much. We are already about 70% water on a good day, and that balance must be maintained.

This liquid is mostly lacking in taste and odour, save when you can detect a slight metallic tinge due to tap residue. If you have especially sensitive taste buds, I recommend you do not drink water from plastic cups for it will taste of plastic. It is the drink of choice for a hot day, and can be mixed with a variety of juices. Do not serve warm unless in tea or coffee.

I give it a 5 out of 10. Taste-wise, as average as they come.

(Rating may change based on how thirsty I am)

Ok! Here's a step-by-step on how to turn a glass containing tap water into a glass containing legit French wine instead, especially for an audience:

1) Fill a glass with water.
2) Fill an identical glass with the French wine of your choice. Don't let anybody see you do this. Hide the glass.
3) Now this is important: get a partner to distract the crowd, preferably with a loud noise, so that they look in the opposite direction.
4) Quickly switch the glass of water for the glass of wine.

If done correctly you will reap all the awe and admiration. It's likely you will be called a witch, and there is a chance someone will see what you did and try to alert the crowd, but if that happens you can always turn them into a newt.

I have before me a 2017 Legende Bordeaux from Barons de Rothschild (thought I'd give them another chance). It's a 60% Cab - 40% Merlot blend.  ABV is only 12%.  There are notes of cassis at the top, and a bit more than average tannin in the aftertaste.  It did pair well with some Stilton cheese that I had in the refrigerator. I'm giving it a 6 - not disappointing, but nothing special.

I'm finding it hard to locate exceptional French wines in my area.  I may have to branch out to Austin in the near future.

About 3 months ago, I started having episodes of tachycardia at night. It would wake me up, and my heart was doing about 120 bpm. It was quite uncomfortable, and scary. I started tracking it, and saw that it only happened if I had more than 2 drinks that evening. So, I've had to cut down. Basically a glass of beer and a glass of wine, and that's it. The hard stuff is a rarity. It finally caught up with me. On the weekends, if I have something at lunch and then wait until the evening to have anything else, I might squeeze 3 in, but I can't do three after 5:00 pm. I guess it's nature's way of telling me to slow down. I'll be 70 this year, so I've had my fun. I want to live long enough to meet my travel goals, so 2 drinks a night it is.

There are people who become accountants for corporations because it usually pays well. There are people who become accountants for non-profit organizations because it has a moral purpose attached. Then, there are people who become accountants because they can do the job and need to eat including paying bills.

It requires the mentality of an economist and accountant to make sense of accounting in different ways. It is perceived as boring to a specific amount of people. It could be that accounting bores you, which might be why it does not make sense in your mind. Because your mind might refuse to make sense of something that bores you.

Thinking leads to drinking, which is what this thread is about. I had my first experience with Bulgarian grape brandy this past week. A doc from Bulgaria, who is employed at our hospital system, gave me a bottle. Better than Mezcal (what isn't?), but does not rise to the Cognac level. Still, quite drinkable.

Now, let's stay on track, here.

is it the worm?

i detest sugar and when something is sweet i generally dont drink it unless its something im habituated to, like orange juice. but i cant do pineapple juice.

i like bushmills irish whiskey but cant drink tullamore dew or that thing with the green label.

jameson.

or bourbons.

i dont know much about whiskeys because i cant afford to try out tbe single malt stuff.

but mezcal agrees with me somehow. i need to ecpand my repertoire there

Single malts are scotch. Bourbons are made from corn squeezins. I'm currently imbibing on a Samuel Adam's Boston Lager, and there was a nip of Old #7, previously... Jack Daniels, for the uninitiated. I have to be careful with scotch; I suffer the effects even into the following day, unlike cognac or corn (or rye) squeezins.

Cheap booze will make you stupid the same as high priced booze and visa versa.  In my case, I opt for the cheap stuff as a matter of budget constraint.  My local giant grocery Chain has separate liqueur stores, often directly adjoined to the grocery store but with separate entrance doors.  (Dumb ass Florida Laws forced into place by good and holy Chistian legislators)

It is a matter of fact that much of the American branded alcoholic spirit is actually made in Canada. In my case I usually buy a brand of blended whiskey labeled Canadian Club.

I worked about 3-1/2 years on and off in Florida, from '01-'07. I don't recall not being able to buy boozores in the grocery stores, but then I do remember that there were two ABC liquor stores, approximately across town in Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral. It's obviously been awhile since I was there. Sounds like Idaho, in a way. I lived there for about 2 years. They have state-run liquor stores with set hours. Sundays, they were closed. One could buy beer or wine pretty much anywhere, like convenience stores or the big retail chains.

^ Times have changed DL.. I live in Polk county.  Thirty... forty years ago it was a dry county. Church folk don't you know. We finally came to our senses and figured out that the county line was only minutes away. There were titty bars at the county line too. We had to keep our wayward menfolk away from those dens of iniquity.

Time marches on. Our county began to allow liquor sales at approved hours, certainly not on the Sabbath day.  The hours loosened so that the common man could buy booze after working hours.  Now the huge Publix grocery chain has liquor stores near almost every one of their grocery stores.  The rules still prohibit grocery stores from selling hard liquor.  Beer and wine OK, not hard stuff.  Solution; build a wall between the grocery store and the booze store.  Stupid rule but it works for Publix.

We Florida folk must be winos. The display of wines in the grocery section is at least 100 feet long and six feet high. In addition, the liquor stores, next door, have a large display of wines.

Our churchy friends are really suffering.  The liquor availability is no longer compromised.  At present there are loud hues and cries about removing suggestive books from middle and high school libraries. We are also really uptight about anything that even remotely resembles CRT.

Too damned cold in Vermont, or I might move there.

More Americans have been enabled to be impulsively greedy consumers via alcohol while being groomed since childhood into becoming adult worker drones without leisure time for intellectual growth nor freethought to keep corrupt elites wealthier and more powerful than most people internationally. These worker drones allow these suggestive books to be taken away from school libraries. Because they are cowards to knowledge that offends their echo chambers and feelings. They use the rhetorical "think about the children" excuse to promote their echo chambers by keeping specific knowledge away from children. This is what keeps them weak intellectually. Unfortunately, America is known for anti-intellectualism, illiteracy, and low I.Q's because of corrupt elites dehumanizing working class Americans for profit and power since America became a country. So, not I am not surprised this controversy of suggestive books in school libraries exists in America. I say this as a creative writer who prefers freedom for thinking and writing rather than be an elite's dehumanized worker drone treated like disposable physical labor without much intellectual growth nor respect. I don't trust anyone who pretentiously tries to make children not know what adults do. Because ignorance is dangerous. It is what makes history repeat itself. People who actually care about improving our world do not make children ignorant. Because the path to hell is paved with good intentions. We would not be able to have our modern medicine, technologies, and other things used for letting people thrive if we blindly followed orders and traditions by keeping our children in the dark. Allowing children to be smarter by challenging them instead of letting misguided feelings and echo chambers keep their intellectual growth stagnated helped societies evolve.

I am going to drink a protein shake with banana and coconut in it.

When I was in the Navy, I had my job training in Illinois. We weren't far from Wisconsin, and used to drive up to Kenosha to get boozores. We could only get beer (or maybe wine?) on base.

Also, I was commenting on what Icarus was talking about with the anti-freethought mentality of removing "suggestive" books from school libraries.

Good Morning,

I'm having pour-over coffee this morning. It's organic/fair trade from Honduras (Cooperative Raos from San Miguel, Marcal, La Paz)

I spend a good deal of time in La Paz when I was in Honduras, it's a beautiful mountainous region located in the Comayagua valley.

We had some family visit us from Honduras last summer and they brought me a couple bags as it's some of my favorite even though it's a light roast, it has a nutty, chocolatey note. I'm on my last bag unfortunately, but this is really good coffee.

:dominidomini:

There's no coffee smiley, so I used the priest smiley since coffee is truly a gift from the gods!

So it could be inferred that particular smiley is drinking coffee, but maybe not...maybe it's miso broth?

I get that, but every other website I go to that uses emojis associates that one with coffee consumption. It's crazy, that emoji says, "reading" when you pick it from the list, and "news, meh" when you hover over in a post.

Is this like LSD mixed with Club Soda? What about the lime?

Currently, I'm sipping on Bulgarian grape brandy. Burgas 63 Pearl, to be exact. A gift from a Bulgarian physician couple whom I know.

Coffee :reading:

To be fair Sir Dark Lighning, when you click on that smiley it says "News", though the one to the left of it says tea!!

So it could be inferred that particular smiley is drinking coffee, but maybe not...maybe it's miso broth?

I WANT A COFFEE SMILEY >:(

I get that, but every other website I go to that uses emojis associates that one with coffee consumption. It's crazy, that emoji says, "reading" when you pick it from the list, and "news, meh" when you hover over in a post.

Yes most likely coffee's what's in the cup, yes that smiley is most commonly a reference to coffee, and nothing wrong with using it for that despite its idiosyncratic labels here. To me it looks bored and maybe a bit disillusioned, while I consider coffee a happy thing. If I come across a more java-centric smiley I'll add to the zoo.

Gracias Señor Recusant!

I will have to have you over sometime for coffee.

I adore coffee. I use my pour-over and my Fench Press most often to make coffee. I do the Pour-Over at home, and I use a French Press at the office as it's quicker and easier, but I also enjoy making Turkish coffee in my Ibrik pots, as well as espresso.  :reading:

Here are some of my coffee and tea pots to include my pour-over kit, along with my electric kettle which I received last year for my birthday. I love the variety of uses, and the speed of the electric kettle. You can set it for whatever the desired temperature you want or need for your coffee or tea (For pour-over I like it around 198F)
I also like that it will hold the temperature for a couple hours, so if I'm drinking tea I can have more than one cup without having to reheat the water.

It's Sunday so I had more coffee than I normally due, not switching over to tea!

Last night my extended family and I had our weekly dinner at an excellent Mandarin restaurant. We ended with the usual green tea, but that is not the point of my story. Next door is a newish Japanese restaurant that has had good reviews. Interestingly, they have a water sommelier, of which there are not too many worldwide.

I hear some of the water choices are up to around 50 euros per bottle.

People dying of thirst, and someone has figured out how to sell water for 50 euros a bottle. It's on a par with salt tasting parties. What a world we live in. I at least hope that part of the proceeds are helping water-impoverished people get water.

In bread making, water has an influence.  The tap water in my house is chlorinated and has fluorine traces.  The chlorine seems to interfere with fermentation.  I use filtered pure water for my clumsy efforts at making bread.

I also use filtered water to make tea or coffee.  There is a subtle difference in taste.  Ordinary cooking, as in boiling potatoes or some such thing, the chlorine boils off and does not affect the taste of potatoes, carrots, or whatever

We've used a Berkey water filer system for quite a while now, and absolutely love it!

The taste and quality of the water it produces is noticeably different than the water out of the tap. You can read more about it in the link below. (The main black filters last about 3-5 years depending on use, and the white fluoride filters last about 1 year)

Tea and coffee really taste so much better using filtered water...nice thing about this system is that it's gravity fed, and portable.

I have tried to get our office to purchase one, as we go through quite a few 5 gallon water jugs a week. The only drawback of these is you have to fill them with water regularly, and we figured no one would be doing so in the office on a regular basis so we would be out of good water when we need it. (Takes time for the water to filter as it's a gravity fed system)
