Actually, organic chemistry is very simple. The secret is that there are just a few basic rules to remember, just like playing chess. The rules govern the movement of an electron in a system of atoms and molecules, so one can usually work out or predict what is likely to happen in any situation. No need to memorize reactions, which is what attracted me to the subject. A bonus is that organic chemistry is a like architecture or sculpture at the molecular scale, which also appealed to me, the frustrated architect.

Yes, from time to time. My problem was that I had too many interests as a young lad — most of them unfortunately mutually exclusive. There aren't enough hours in a day to be a professional chemist and architect at the same time.

I have always taken more than a passing interest in architectural design topics. I've even been asked to give lectures at a local design school as guest lecturer. The Institute of Architects have also invited me to give some talks. The funny thing is, they were all under the impression that I was a qualified architect. :worried:
why do tbey call them stool pigeons anyway?
A stool pigeon is someone who is an informer for the police. The term first appeared in the early 1800s to mean a decoy pigeon. The word stool in the term stool pigeon comes from the sixteenth-century word stoale, which means tree stump. Presumably, the term stoale pigeon referred to a decoy pigeon that was affixed to a tree stump. By the 1800s the word stool pigeon referred to a person who was used in a sting operation to trap a criminal, a sort of human decoy.

Brownian motion with molecules that size could be a bit painful.
:o I'd bet!
I once saw a video of an actual DNA molecule in some sort of liquid being jolted around by Brownian motion. It's surprising just how violent it can be at such a small scale! If a molecule could have a tonic-clonic seizure, that's what it would look like. :chin:
Pity I can't find the video on Youtube though. :(
I attended a lecture on applications of AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), during which one slide showed some worm-like structures. When I asked what they were, the presenter told me they were hexane molecules! My chemist's mind was blown. They've also imaged polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and, thank goodness, they look exactly like our models of those compounds. It would have been so embarrassing if we had drawn the molecules incorrectly for all our careers.

I think Dudamel has done a lot to popularize classical music. In his energy when he conducts he is very much like Leonard Bernstein, but I don't know whether he has Bernstein's depth of philosophical understanding of the music. In addition to conducting, Lenny was a composer and a brilliant lecturer on classical music.
Dudamel is a real showman.
Here is some more show biz with the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra. I love it when kids are having so much fun, all the while displaying some real talent.

That's a very clever "in" joke! I guess only nerds would get it, not that you and I are nerds, of course.
Nerd? *nervous laughter* I don't know what you're talking about. :whistling:

Me too, the word play on "coming out" is clever. On another level as well, because I've heard from so many people that when they finally plucked up the courage to come out to their parents, they were informed that the family had always known.
Some folks just make too big a deal over sexuality. I can't Imagine what it must be like to have to pluck up the courage to come out.
If I may indulge in a bit of nostalgia: This talented Cuban dancer is a carbon copy of one of my exes. Identical face and build, but not a dancer, more's the pity. I adored his golden skin colour, which was due to his Malaysian origins.

Yes, he is exactly my cup of tea in looks and skin type, although I usually find those qualities in Asian guys.

Oh, you are so innocent. I will not elaborate, lest I offend the straight sensibilities at HAF.

Aw nuts and stuff. I tried to play the video and it came back with "Video unavailable". I have no idea what this thread is about but if I see a play button I'm tempted to use it.

Oh dear! It's a video of The Village People singing Go West, so all I can suggest is: go to YouTube and search for
Go West Village People.
