Title: New app for the blind
Post by: Dave on February 04, 2017, 09:34:53 AM
There is a new app, "Be my eyes" I think it is called, where volunteers help blind people "see".

It involves mobile phone technology. The blind person signs in and is connected to a volunteer. Then the blind person points his/her phone at the object they need to "see" and the volunteer describes it. One example might be helping someone choose the right colour thread to fix a teeshirt - "Run your finger over the reels - that is the right colour."

At the moment it is only on the IPhone but Android being developed. With, currently, 30 000 blind registerees and 450 000 volunteers the latter might get a call or two a month - and they are given the option of rejecting a call, the system then dials another.

Sounds like a brilliant idea, free at the moment but there may be a charge for the app later to pay for the system. Of course, it only works where mobile coverage works . . .
