Title: Yep, It's Me
Post by: MikeyV on July 07, 2006, 08:20:07 PM
Hey everyone,

Yes, it's the same MikeyV from WWGHA that deleted his account. Couldn't stand the random censorship, you know?

See you around the boards!

P.S. Good to see you again MommaSquid!

Welcome MikeyV.

I'm not a big fan of censorship, esp the delete all curse words but not other offensive words approach.  I was about to use the word "crap" yesterday on WWGHA in describing ID then realized it would probably be deleted....so, being stubborn i used "word that can't be said on the forum"  Eh, anyway...great to see you here and I hope you like it.

Laetus, good for you!  Words are not offensive, in and of themselves.  Sometimes, they are essential for making a point, such as my use in the "censorship" thread.  The most mild words can be the most offensive, if utilzed in derogatory fashion.  On the other hand, some of the great comics use what others might consider to be the most offensive language possible to communicate the most effectively, such as Carlin, Rock, Bruce, Black, Pryor, Kinison.  "Offensive" language can often be the most penetrating, most succinct method of communication.

Intent should always be considered...but, hopefully, you will never find it necessary to remove any post.  That can be a very slippery slope indeed!

Other than spam (ad bots and things of that nature) I don't think there will ever be a reason to completely remove posts.  I think the best way is to ask the person nicely to control themselves...I figure the only time this will apply is when a crazy theist comes across the forum (well, some atheists can be crazy too...you know the ones who their their 'type' of atheism is the correct way and all should follow it).  When and if that happens I already have a nice little troll sign they can wear as an avatar...if of coarse they don't change their approach.  I also think everyone should get a second chance.  I actually hope to not ever have to use the troll ban system...but that's just a hope, experience on other forums tells me that it will have to be used eventually.

If everyone has noticed the little colored cards to the upper right of posts. Blue is report and yellow is like voting for someone to be banned (I think something like 40 votes is set to autoban the member...so there aren't even enough members at this point for it to work)  Through features like that, I think it will help make the board more of a democracy rather than a monarchy where I make every little decision.  I'm going to figure out exacty how the system works then post a little FAQ in the rules so everyone will know about it.
